I sent a message similar to this to the PO, but the problem he faces is that used 996 are going so cheap combined with the high cost of replacement motors for this car.

Suspected cause
My 2000 C2 just had an engine failure after my second track dayprobably a rod bearing failure.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The noise posted in the thread last week turned out to be my upgraded IMS destroying itself. I have decided against rebuilding the engine or getting a used motor since my wife and I were planning on doing a kitchen remodel and I would prefer to keep the funds for that. So I was wondering what I could sell it as is. The car currently has 104,500 miles and the body and interior I would rate as 8/10. The only mods on the car are an oem gt3 front lip, oem gt3 sideskirts, aftermarket gt2 wing and fister mufflers. Two weeks ago I replaced the engine mounts and front drop links. I will probably sell the Fikse's separately and include the oem wheels.

Give Parts Heaven here in Hayward, CA a call. It might be interested in the car.
Give Oklahoma Foreign -- in Oklahoma City -- a call. I did when I had a 2008 Cayman S with a salvage title. OF offered me the same money for car that the other driver's insurance allowed me. I decided to take a shot and arranged to have the car placed in a salvage car auction at a large auction facility out in the central valley and the car sold at auction for some couple of thousand dollars more than the car's value.
Not sure your car would do well at an auction even if you could arrange to get ok from the facility's general manager.
But if either PH or OF is interested the process should be rather quick and painless. For OF the guy I talked to said he would transfer half the money to my account when I agreed to the deal. The truck driver that would be sent to pick up the car would give me check for the other half when I handed over the keys and salvage title signed releasing all interest in the vehicle.
I sent a message similar to this to the PO, but the problem he faces is that used 996 are going so cheap combined with the high cost of replacement motors for this car. It essentially makes the roller, no matter how nice it is, worth very little. I have seen and bought them for $4 to $6k myself. Then you end up dumping a ton of money into them, when you could have had a decent running driver for about the same money. The only way it makes sense (in my mind) is for the guy like me who likes to wrench as a hobby and has a decent shop. Paying someone to do it would be insane, from a cost perspective. My gut tells me Id be shocked if you could get anywhere near $8k, maybe $6 if you are patient.
It would be a completely different situation if the cars were worth more or motors were available for anything resembling a reasonable price.

Sorry to hear this, but sure would be nice to know more details about the IMS bearing installed, who did it and when.
Might help someone else on the board
Edit - you thought about swapping the IMS bearing for something like the pelican cheap IMS bearing replacement, flushing the engine with something to try and get out as much metal as possible, a few oil flushes and filter changes and see how you do?
At this point if you think your engine is a write off anyway, you don't have much to lose by dropping a relatively cheap bearing in it, flushing and running?
Sure, I'll post the details when I get home. The shop said they could drop the transmission and see if they could get all the bearing debris out and install a new one and do a flush. Even if they were able to get it running again I would not feel comfortable driving it and if I sold it I would feel equally terrible if the engine failed on the new owner. Just going to suck it up, take it as a loss, and move on.
In regards to a partout, I wish I had the time. Between work, errands, and trying to keep up with a 2 yr old there isnt enough days in the week. The only things I could possibly take off are the wing, wheels, and sideskirts.
I can't possibly imagine how they could flush the engine of the metal chaff from a grenaded bearing and get everything out.
That sure smells like they're bilking you for labor hours.
I see three logical options: replace the engine, part it out or sell the roller.
Yea i agree, they said they've been successful before but I agree with you which is why I'm selling as a roller. Replacing the engine is not financially smart when the cost of a new engine and labor are 70% of what I paid to for the car.
Sorry for your loss, I'm sure that is a shop out there than can pick this thing up
Good Luck with than kitchen remodel, we did one a few years back and started with a 10-15 budget and we ended at around 30K.
Sorry about the loss....good luck. Same thing happened to my 996 this summer however, I opted for a new 997S engine. Perhaps not the smart thing but its going to be a fun car. Should be done soon. Hate seeing these things get parted. Again, good luck.
Sorry about the car....but if you want to see my kitchen remodel that I did last year (which was about 75K all done, and I did about 85% of the labor myself):

That's beautiful, I'm looking to do something similar but move the sink/dishwasher to an island and extend the kitchen. My sister in law just redid her kitchen and her price tag was in that area.
^^This ^^ was my rationale 100%... I already had the motor out of the car. Regardless of potential other failures, if I didn't do "the solution" and the IMSB went,
I would have been out $20k for an extra $1k investment... I really couldn't see any downside...
Kudos to how you take this but it seems what your shop suggested to you is EXACTLY what happened to the car before it got sold to you. That really sucks. Somebody out there felt less terrible selling it on to you.
Hate to see this type of thing happening.

I got a bunch of pm offers, I never listed it officially. Wheels are posted for sale in the classifieds, I do need to update the pics when I have some free time.
My 2000 C2 just had an engine failure after my second track dayprobably a rod bearing failure. Im sure my car is worth less than yours, but Im still considering a rebuild. If my next car is to be a 996, it would be nice to have one with an engine that I had confidence in. I can only really get that if I rebuild the engine in a car I already own.
If I did rebuild the engine I would basically be married to the car for a long time. Once I get done finishing the remodel I can get something fun again. At least this gives me the opportunity to try more cars before I lock myself into something. There's a few more on my list that I'd like to own before I make that decision. Good luck to you on your rebuild.
