Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I ended up pulling it in the last little bit by tightening the flange down and that seemed to work fine.
Leading evidence: 'Tighten flange down' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Tighten flange down' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Should I plan on using my freezer, or is there some reason to avoid this?

That being said, I did have trouble getting it fully seated using just the installation tool and a rubber mallet.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

... along with the IMS Pro Toolkit and the IMS Supplemental Toolkit - which should be all the special tools necessary.
Quality of the bearing and the tools is impressive. You could say that at the prices charged it certainly should be - but I give this 9.95 out of 10.
I do wish the Supplemental kit could be split in half. It includes several items specific to a 997, which were clearly expensive to manufacture and which I will never use for my 996.
I plan to pack all tools in some suitable case. And probably sell them when I'm done.
I do have some questions about the upcoming big job:
What is the thread of the bolt that holds the camshaft locking piece in place?
What is a source for the round plugs that cover the ends of the camshafts?
What is a source for new crush rings that should be used when re-installing the cam chain tensioners?
Thanks, charlie. I read your thread about doing this job without a lift - impressive, and very helpful. (And it makes me happy to have access to a lift.)
Another question:
The instructions do not include any suggestion about freezing the plug or bearing before inserting them into the IMS - but this seems to be fairly standard practice for "press fit" operations. Should I plan on using my freezer, or is there some reason to avoid this?
Happy to help - I'm envious you're using a lift. If I ever have to do a similar project again I'll probably invest in one.
I did not freeze it - so I can say for certain that it isn't necessary. That being said, I did have trouble getting it fully seated using just the installation tool and a rubber mallet. I ended up pulling it in the last little bit by tightening the flange down and that seemed to work fine. A few other people have done this themselves, so they may have tried freezing it and can share their experience.
One thing I can say is that both LN and Jake Raby were very helpful when it came to questions. When in doubt, ask. Those guys know more about their products and these engines than I'll ever claim to.
Cheers
Charlie
Remember, these are professional tool kits, designed for shops that are buying the kits to service all M9x engines. The IMS Solution was never designed, or intended to be a DIY affair. That doesnt mean it cant be, as many here have done the job successfully.
The cost of the kit isnt really enough, considering what into it- FYI. If the kit got a 9.95 because it cost real money, well...It should have been a 10.
That said, the thread for the Cam holding tool is 8x1.25mm.
The sourche for the crush washers and Cam end plugs is Pelican Parts. Only use the green OEM Cam end plugs- not black.
I tend to agree - it looks like excellent value for the money.
It got 9.95 / 10 because of its quality - which is exceptional.
Jake: Do you have any thoughts on the question of freezing the bearing before inserting it into the IMS?
Follow the instructions verbatim. Do this step by step, and do not deviate.
I put those instruction booklets together, and if you dont question them, youll be fine.
Once again I am in awe of another Rennlister who does this themselves. Way beyond what I would want to attempt given the consequences of screwing up. Plus I am way to old to be sliding in and out from under the car, LOL. No lift, sigh.
Reading the DIY it looks to be pretty straight forward... but then again, I've rebuilt a couple entire cars by myself with hand tools
I'm glad to see some Rennlisters who are actually willing to get their hands dirty! haha
