With all the cashier's check scams running around lately, I read a wire story this afternoon cautioning about emails targeting Citibank customers in an attempt to get their account information.
Leading evidence: 'scam artist' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'scam artist' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check scams' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

To my surprise, I got one of these emails just now, and about fell off the chair when I read it. The guy can't even spell!

In general beware of any popup window that prompts for user id and password.
Regardless of the illetaral fool of the citi email, some of these people are really good and they will send you to Citi website and pop their window over it, so you would actually see citi website, nut enter information into their website...
I think you meant to say the "illiterate" fool.... ( I love the irony )

big
words ... at least he got the banks name right !
Amazes me that people fall for this and the Nigerian type scams....I guess the foriegn criminals are taking advantage of the US education system.
My neighbor - a retired NYPD officer. He fell for the IRS scam and apparently didn't think it was odd that the government wanted to be paid in iTunes gift cards. Seriously.
My info is the spelling, punctuation, grammar are bad on purpose. (Although I think in the example this was perhaps overdone a bit.) The idea is if someone actually responds to the scam email this signals the person responding may not be firing on all cylinders and is very likely going to fall for the scam and in fact may respond favorably to other scams, too. The idea is to hook the victim and keep him/her on the hook until his/her bank balance is zero or someone (a family member) puts a stop to the victim participating in the scam.
Must work or these scam emails would disappear.
