And my indy told me he used a Toyota Tacoma filter as a replacement?!

Except for visual inspection/diagnosis, Normally to diagnose a noise while running, the engine will have to be run while diagnosing, That said I would visually inspect in oil filter for metal debris first, check oil level and oil pressure, if all that is normal, then crank engine and listen to Cats.If the Cats are quite, then proceed on to checking more difficult, expensive and sinister possibilities.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone want to venture a guess? The car sat for a few weeks. I drove it around town, parked for several hours, and then started driving home when I heard the noise as I started pulling away. The frequency of the slap matches the rpms. The suddenness of the onset has me thinking that it's not bore scoring or piston slap - I mean those would get gradually worse over time right?

Thanks in advance
That sounds more like a knock than a slap. Sounds like it could be anything, including bore scoring. I wouldnt rule that out at all. And it sounds loud enough to warrant not starting the engine.
Agree Murphy. It's going to the indy tomorrow on a flat bed. If it didn't sound so bad, I'd be trying to fix myself. I just posted in the off chance someone could say it's definitely part x - then I could go about doing something without starting the motor.
Lex - Serpentine belt is less than a year old. Water pump is a little over 2 years old.
Since the car has been sitting for a few wks, I would just drive it a few days and see. Just make sure the oil level and preasure level is good. Could be just a clogged lifter. It may unclog itself after some driving.
There's a response I didn't expect. I don't know, I'm hesitant in fear of really screwing something up. If it's stuck lifter, I'd rather pay the indy for an hour and have him tell me that haha.
Just from reading all of these stories, there is a few thing you can check quickly and try to rule it out. These are just my notes from reading all the knocking, ticking stories over the last 2 years.
1. Isolate noise, see if it comes from the Cat, Exhaust, head, block, water pump, oil pump... If you are afraid of starting the engine at this point which is understandable, skip this step.
2. Drop the oil filter, collapsed filter causes a similar noise. Also a chance to check for metal or other pieces which then point to bigger problem
3. Check spark plugs, loose plugs makes that clicking, knocking noise that goes with revs too. Doesn't get louder but it does go faster/slower.
4. Drop the oil sump
The above 4 seems to be something easy to do and its what I would do in that order. I am think item 2/3 are probable due to it happens very suddenly.
Since you are taking it to your Indy, this may no longer be applicable, but I would drain oil and inspect oil filter. If there are no particulates, you have ruled out most of the costly failures. If no particulates, I would run it and see if I could isolate the noise to a particular location.
Thanks everyone, I'll keep this in mind for next time. Car is on it's way to the indy. We'll see what he says. The indy has a great reputation and was a referral from my old trusted indy in LA (Callas).

Lol, the indy briefly heard the noise at start-up but then the sound went away. There is a fault for bank 4. I may inspect coils later on my own. How does it feel to be right all the time Ahsai?
I told him to inspect the oil filter for debris before I go pick it up.
I was already looking at e46/92 M3's and 997's.
Ahhh !!! A lifter that has bleed down, quit common on a new engine or one that has sat for a long period of time. If the engine stops at a position where one of the valves are at full open position, the spring pressure is at the highest and can push the oil out of the lifter. That's a best case scenario for a noise of this type.
Well, the car sat for 3 weeks. But the noise was after I drove it into town and left it parked for a bit. The car had been started since then. Once to move into the garage and once to move out for tow. The last time it was turn on, the CEL came on and it said drive to service or something like that.
I have little more comfort now, next time I'll be trying to figure it out on my own.
Thanks all!
BTW, oil filter came back clean. And my indy told me he used a Toyota Tacoma filter as a replacement?! I'm not sure that's staying on.
I need to sell this thing or drive it more. Car sat for a couple of weeks, now it's tapping when its warm. Doesn't sound in sync with RPMs to me. No CELs. I'm inclined to take it out for an Italian tune up but thought I should post up first. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I worked on a 2013 Toyota Corolla a couple of weeks ago and was surprised to see it had a cartridge type oil filter, so perhaps a newer Tacoma does too.
I don't normally work on that new of cars.
I tend to work on higher mileage(100K-300K) cars that are
at least
10 years old.
Basically the cheapest vehicles available for sale.
Sometimes I get lucky and it's a nice newer car though.
If it were me, I would only use OEM, Mann, or Napa Gold oil filters on my Porsche 996!
I'm very picky about oil filters after seeing cheap cartridge filters that have collapsed.
I also have cut open a lot of oil filters and the cheap ones are cheap for a reason!
Yeah Tex, I hear ya and agree. My car has the IMS solution, so it's a spin on filter. I'm do for an oil change soon, the Taco filter is coming off for a Napa gold for sure. The indy that did it is very reputable, so I'm inclined to believe them if they think is ok.
Bash, I'll give it a go without the belt tonight. I'll have to go drive it a bit though, I only hear it when the car is warm. My other thought was the cats.
isla, I don't know, but enough random noise come out of this car I think I'll get the stethoscope. Is a non rythmic tapping noise typical of a bad flywheel?
That being said, the clutch and flywheel only have 15K miles on them. I've complained on noises coming from the bell housing before, 4 separate well respected indy's have told me that everything seems fine.
Or pick up a decent used one. They go up for sale on the classifieds (and on ebay) pretty regularly. Lots of people swap them out for 200 cell cats. I bet a bunch of us have them in the garage (I know I have one in my garage attic, I took both of them off because one threw a check engine light and had a loose core).
