Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a rumbling growling like sound coming from my alternator on cold (65f degree) start up. somewhat like a rock crusher. not outrageously noisy but noticeable. It seems to last for a couple of minutes, then go's away. I used a stethoscope on the case and this seems to be the source. Everything functions fine and always has. Warm or hot starts do not produce any unusual noises. Anyone else have this experience? 2004 6 speed with X51 65,000 miles Thanks, Paul

It could be the alternator bearing or something loose rattlimg inside. I had this problem on a Bosch reman alternator. You should be able to reproduce the noise if you remove the sepertine belt and hand spin the alternator.

POST 3Original post

Like Ahsai said - Alternator bearing. Time for a new alternator. Recommend not getting a re-man one.

POST 4Original post

Get this new one instead. A little more output, fits well and at a great price! https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-AL0815N...w_wl_ov_dp_1_1

POST 8Original post

While you are in there: 1. Check the idler pulley bearings - a frequent and inexpensive replacement job. 2. Check the alignment of all the pullies including the a/c pulley with a straightedge 3. w/p bearing for play/leaks

POST 10Original post
