Suggestion

I'm pretty sure the new starter I installed a few weeks ago was worth at least 10HP, and the car might be running cooler as well.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Finally, after reading so many threads on replacing engine mounts, and buying some Rein mounts on Amazon months ago, I decided to install them yesterday on my '99 911. Great instructions on Pelican (thanks) and a relatively simple thing to do. My 18mm nuts were rusted in place after 17 years of NE conditions. My 12 point 18mm deep socket was no match (started to round off the nuts) so I got a 6 point deep 18mm socket and they came right off. Honestly, my 911 feels 'tighter' and more rigid than before.(72,450 miles on original mounts). The few miles I've driven since replacing the mounts ,I've noticed better handling in fast corners, feeling more planted. Had to buy 2- m12x1.50 nuts since the old ones were so rusted.

POST 2Original post

Way to go Steve! But I'd keep the rusty nuts on the down low.

POST 3Original post

I'm glad that - with some elbow grease - you were able to get your nuts off, and I hope your new nuts serve you well.

POST 4Original post

In all the spooky things I have discovered that can happen to my 996, the engine mount one is new to me. Sweet.

POST 5Original post

Like most things 996, the engine mount thing is overstated - car guys will always claim that the best mod they ever did - that made the most difference and is truly AMAZING - is whatever mod they just finished. I'm pretty sure the new starter I installed a few weeks ago was worth at least 10HP, and the car might be running cooler as well. And the radio is getting better reception.

Thanks! I'm just glad it has nothing to do with decreasing chances of catastrophic engine failure.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess at my age, rusty nuts should be expected...

POST 8Original post

notice any difference in shifting(more smooth) after the mounts were installed? when i had my 2000 996 i noticed big difference after mounts were changed

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll have a better idea after my drive tomorrow morning that will give me some highway driving and some back road curves. Hell, I always think my 911 runs better after a wash.
