I can still pull on the cable using a pliers, but the stupid thing is really stuck.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi all, my hood jammed on Sunday after a nice round of golf. I can hear the solenoid activating but the mechanism is stuck. I retrieved the release cable, unfortunately i was yanking on it so hard it snapped halfway. Before i start blindly spraying WD-40 inside my hood, does anyone have any ideas on how to get the mechanism to release? I can still pull on the cable using a pliers, but the stupid thing is really stuck. Hopefully someone has dealt with something similar before?

POST 2Original post

I really need to get in and lube everything up before it happens to me. My cable does nothing and will break to should I need to use it...Keep us posted!

POST 3Original post

While someone is pulling on the cable, have another person push DOWN on the hood. See if it releases. Might have to push down really hard. Second thing to try, someone pulling on the cable and try to work your fingers under the hood and lift UP.

its not something i ever thought about, now i'm wishing I did. This is such a PITA I was actually trying that as I was under the car, i'll try it again with a 2nd set of hands

Mine used to play tricks on me. It usually went something like go to the liquor store frunk works fine and accepts the bottle. Get home and I could hear the solenoid but frunk would not open. Then in a day or two push the release and pop she opened right up. This happened many times over a few months. Next time she was in the shop I had the mechanism replaced and works every time now.

Unfortunately no, the stupid thing was completely frozen. I had to get my C4S into the shop anyway (leaky front diff seals) so i'll have them take care of it. I have never had a car where the hood mechanism locked up, I really wish i greased it occasionally. Live and learn i guess

POST 9Original post

Not on the wire in itself but the mecanism. All the pivot points.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Figured I'd give everyone an update on this. Somehow the hood mechanism bent, and the hood jammed. I ended up having to replace the hood latch / release mechanism. My hood was always a little sticky, it must have happened under one of the previous owners. Very annoying

Saw this post and waited overnight for the car (996.2) to cool. Next morning the latch worked fine. So which 'mechanism was replaced? The latch was lubed recently and seems to work fin. Should the solenoid be replaced? mjfeeney4

POST 13Original post

I just purchased a '04 996 C4S cab. where do I find the release cables for the frunk and the engine hood? I want to be prepared if this happens to me.

POST 14Original post

Engine hood cable release is under the left rear tail light. The front hood cable release is usually under the front right headlight. It would be wise to locate both. I relocated the hood release cable to just inside the tow hook bumper plug. Pop the plug and there is the release cable. And while you are at it, good time to lube both release mechanism's with some spray-on white lithium grease.
