The car has only 44K miles and includes several modifications most of which I wasnt specifically looking for such as a VF supercharger kit installed roughly 2 years ago, along with KW V3 coilovers, upgraded sway bars, a new head unit, an IMS bearing upgrade, and a new clutch.

If you use the search function to look for other members here that have had the Vortech supercharger on their 996, you will find that lots of guys had that system on their 996.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone! I recently had the opportunity to purchase a 2004 996 C4S at a fair price (around ~$45K). Altogether, the upgrades likely total more than $20K. My concern, and the purpose of this post, is understanding what I should take into account regarding the supercharger. Ive read in many places that increasing engine power can accelerate issues like bore scoring, which is a known concern for the 996. My first priority is to verify whether there is any existing bore scoring. From there, Im unsure whether I should keep the supercharger or revert the engine back to its naturally aspirated setup. If I decide to remove the supercharger kit, what would I be looking at in terms of cost and potential complications? Adding a picture a great visual. Appreciate any feedback in advance. Thank you all.

POST 2Original post

Congratulations on your Porsche. It looks fantastic. If you use the search function to look for other members here that have had the Vortech supercharger on their 996, you will find that lots of guys had that system on their 996. Back when our cars were newish, it was a popular modification. There were several members that tracked their 996 with the Vortech system. "Redridge" was probably the person that was active here the longest. We didn't get the GT3 (in the USA) until 2004. Guys that tracked their cars and wanted more power didn't have the GT3 as an option. The owner of Evolution Motorsports installed one on his 996. It was featured in several magazines, back in the day.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you very much Ellogt40 for this feedback. It was pretty useful, I will go ahead with the inspection of the car overall, borescope it and oil analysis, I am not sure about the running running lean. I have some results of the dyno on this car... I am not sure if that is what you are referring to, but this was on August 2023.

POST 4Original post

I have a vf engineering supercharger kit on my bmw. Its maniacal when it needs to be and calm when it needs to be. Runs a tad rich though out of the box. Ive considered a vf kit for my 4.0 996 engine..but not seriously.

POST 5Original post

Car looks amazing! The color combo is perfect! Looking at the chart and it's making great power!!! I would leave the supercharger on it because once you remove it you'll wish you hadn't. These cars stock are slow and from the dyno chart yours is an animal!
