Leading evidence: 'Use auto parts | mercedes benz' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'amp drives all speakers in this setup' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fuse' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Probably the amp drives all speakers in this setup.

4) Should I at least check the fuse before removing the amp?

I doubt that there is much cost in parts for the repair, they probably copied the code from the version 7 and overwrite it on the amps to be repaired.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I did a reset (can't remember WHAT, right now), but it worked.
Picked up my new to me 2003 base C2 coupe (midnight blue metallic 79K mi) at Porsche Plano on Tuesday, drove it home (350 mi), played the sound system FM and CD all the way. Wednesday, drove it to an appointment listening to FM. Came out from the appointment and fired it up, no sound. Everything works on the CDR23, AM/FM tuning and stations, CD load/eject/play/FF/next track/time but no sound. Volume 0 to +40, no sound, no static, nothing. I'm thinking the amp failed.
VIN Analytics shows it has option 680 Bose High End Sound Package. The amp in the frunk is bolted down with a cover on it, not super easy to remove. The amp has a cooling fan on it, like a PC! It's cold here, 20s and low 30s so it's not a thermal issue.
I do not have the digital sound processer which on Google searches shows as option 680 sometimes. And no CD changer.
1) I looked at the German fuse box. How can I tell if a fuse is blown, and which fuse is for the amp? (low percentage chance I get an answer to both parts of this one LOL)
2) I called Becker Autosound. Ed told me the CDR23 head unit has its own little internal power amp, but the separate amp (Bose?) drives the rear speakers I think he said. That doesn't make sense. Probably the amp drives all speakers in this setup.
3) He said remove the amp and ship it to them. $450 for a replacement amp. Probably rebuilt. Is this my best option? I do NOT want to F around with MOST and proprietary cabling and connectors, that's a whole other post by itself.
4) Should I at least check the fuse before removing the amp? Assuming I can identify it.
Any comments or advice will be much appreciated. I've been on this 996 forum since August while I did my search for the car, very informative and educational. Much superior to that other site that starts with a 9. Thanks!

so Becker's price is competitive. Part number is 996.645.333.0x with the x being anywhere from 1 to 7 with 7 being the latest version. Guess I'm going to have to pull that amp in my 33 degree garage. Not looking forward to it.
My Bose amp started slowly failing by giving me no sound in cold weather only. I did the repair service with
https://paulisoncorpserv.com/
and was up and running for $275.00.
Yeah my phone was able to get there and I used your link successfully. But I don't get it: They want to get paid in advance, then I ship it to them. I'm chatting with "Ed" on the website now LOL.
I had that exact same problem about 2 months ago.
It is a software glitch.
I did a reset (can't remember WHAT, right now), but it worked.
The problem (and fix) IS here on Rennlist.
DON'T spend any money (yet!)
Paul
"pretty sure" it was this:
Power down the stereo by pushing in the left hand radio button
Turn off the ignition key
Close the door
Activate the alarm with the key fob.
Wait a couple minutes
Deactivate the alarm with the key fob
Open the door
Turn the ignition key on
Power up the stereo with the left hand radio button
Sound restored
Thank you

Too late. I pulled the amp and it's off to UPS. But thanks for the info, I've copied it for future reference.
I think Audi and Mazda used this same or similar amp provided by Bose, model 996.645.333.0x with the x being a number from 1 to 7. Mine was 2. Presumably that's the version of the firmware (?) inside. I'm guessing Becker Autosound and Paulison Corp know that a version 7 firmware will resolve most known issues. They make a nice profit ($450 the former, $275 the latter) by doing the update. I doubt that there is much cost in parts for the repair, they probably copied the code from the version 7 and overwrite it on the amps to be repaired. So they're actually selling their knowledge of how to fix this, rather than directing us to Porsche for a new amp which costs $1,001.00. I think Paulison told me in an online chat that they've done thousands of these. I hope I'm getting a permanent fix for the known issues for my money and I'm ok with it if that's the case. Thanks again!
