We used valet at the MGM Grand and checked into the hotel.

Your best, and one of the cheapest mods if you are in AZ is the third radiator mod, clean the outer rads, and the 160F thermostat.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I'ave been lurking for awhile and finally joined recently. This will be my first Porsche, fell in love with them when I was a kid and I am 47 now. A few years ago I realized I could actually afford a 911 and could not believe how affordable the 996's were.
As it is with most things in life if something is too good to be true it generally is. After a bit of reading I came across the the dreaded IMS issue, it scared me off and I put the idea of Porsche ownership on the back burner for awhile. About 6 months ago I starting reading about the 996 again and decided the IMS issue isn't a reason to not buy one. So began my scouring of Craigslist and eBay. Mostly looking just to see what was out there and how the market was. A bit to my surprise there were a huge amount of 996's available for sale locally and in near by states.
When I started looking I really wasn't sure exactly what I wanted, but as I continued my search I decided a C4 was the ticket and convertible too. Beyond that I really wasn't sure what I wanted. As you all know the options these cars have is nearly endless and so i just kept looking until I came across something I really liked. I will say silver seems to be the most popular color out there and the car does look good in silver. Really good, but I ended up with the beautiful girl below.
The car had one owner for 99% of its life and has documentation going back to 02. The woman who owned it even did the window wipers at the dealership.
108K miles, hard top, only "damage" was a lower bumper scrape that was repaired years ago. The interior looks almost flawless...
I fly to Northern California from AZ in the morning to pick it up and drive back...
Pics are from the current owner...Stay tuned for road trip pics soon...
.
Yes! Thanks.
I've been reading about the trip...My son is only 15 and is coming with me to get the car, I am taking him to Vegas on the way home. Should be fun with all the shows to choose from.!
Your best, and one of the cheapest mods if you are in AZ is the third radiator mod, clean the outer rads, and the 160F thermostat. Just one Texans op-ed.
Congrats and welcome!
Pretty car. I think you picked a nice one. Looks and sounds like it was well cared for.
GREAT IDEA to take your son with you to pick up the car. I have made 3 fly out - drive home trips to pick up Porsches with family members. They become great memories that you will share with that family member the rest of your life. Remember to stop to take pics along the way.
Now, if you venture to the Phoenix area, beware of Gonzo (black 997) and Kalashnikov (Russian kid driving an AMG MBZ and likely shirtless). Otherwise, your Porsche experience will probably take a nosedive for the worse.
And take good notes while in Vegas. We'll see you back there on the June 10-11 weekend!
Enjoy!
Avail in easy to use kit form from Pelican parts. Or, you can buy the exact same rad on rockauto.com, and get the hoses and hardware from 928srus.com, ask for Roger. Less costly, but a bit more work.
What a great bonding experience with your 15 year old son. Although, you need to be careful. I picked up a 986 about 4 years ago when my son was 14. He convinced me to upgrade to a 996, and he's now driving the 986.
Hi all, thank you for all the nice comments and info on the radiator mod.
We flew into Sacramento on the 1st and the current owner of the car picked us up at the airport. Super nice guy who has been racing, fixing up old 911's for many years. Sold me the 02 because of a house investment that came up. Only put 500 miles on the car. Original owner put on all other 108 k miles.
Leaving the airport we drove 45 min to his home in Fairfield. The car was parked in his backyard in a purpose built "tent" garage. He unzipped the door and there she was!!! Just as beautiful as she looked in the pictures. My son said "wow" out loud. To be honest it is hard to believe the car has 108K miles because the interior looks new. There is a little wear on the brake handle and just below it, but the dash is perfect and very little wear on the driver's seat. The outside of the car has a few rock chips and a small "indent" near the front license plate holes where the original owner slowly hit something. I plan to cover it with a custom Eurostyle plate.
Went for a test drive and the car felt great! Amazingly flat in the corners and quick, not blow you away quick, but nice. I had a 11 WRX STI for 3 years and the 911 is much better. The sound is mellow, but good. Amazing that you can be raving the car at 4 to 5K and hardly hear the engine. Trip! This is my first Porsche. Came back and did the paperwork and off we went on our road trip home...
Fairfield is about 1/2 way between Sacramento and San Francisco and I had to be back to Tucson by the 4th for work so unfortunately we didn't have time to check out Northern Cal. We headed SW to Oakland so we could at least get a look at the Golden Gate bridge and the city. From Oakland we headed down 5 to Bakersfield where we spent the night. Not much there to be honest and a little sketchy. The next morning we headed to Vegas and along the way in Baker Ca saw the world's largest thermometer. Breathtaking I can assure you. LOL
My son had never seen Las Vegas so he was pretty excited it. Coming into the city it was crazy to see the traffic leaving the state heading back to Ca. It was stop and go for at least 10 miles! The drive from Bakersfield was about 5 hours and really pretty in some areas with snow covered mountains and curvy roads. The car was solid and a comfortable place to be. To my surprise it is actually rather quiet on good roads with minimal squeaking etc from the hard top.
We used valet at the MGM Grand and checked into the hotel. It was busier than I thought it would be for Jan 2nd, but we landed a decent room with a strip view and settled in. We went to Ka that night and I honestly can not tell you what the story was about but it was entertaining and best of all my son really enjoyed it.
On the 3rd we packed up, got the car from Valet and headed towards Tucson. We stopped at the Hoover Damn just outside of Vegas and had a good time looking around. There was an Aventador parked in one of the lots and on the way out we say a McLaren coming in. Pretty cool.
The drive to Tucson took about 7 and a 1/2 hours and once again the car did great. I was never uncomfortable because of the car, just siting for that long sucks. The pedals are easy to reach and use and the cabin layout is nice. It was a bit frustrating not knowing how everything works, but I am reading all the manuals today and getting it down. The shifter and clutch were easy as well and working like they should.
The worst part about the trip home was the smell from the hard top. The original owner starred it either in her garage or barn, covered and on the stand, but the field mice or pack rats made it their home. They chewed a few holes in the headliner and crapped and peed to their heart's content in there as evident by the urine smell we enjoyed the entire trip. Ozium and other air fresheners helped A LOT, but it was noticeable now and then. Over some bumps rat poop would rain down as well.
It was pretty comical and we laughed about it the whole way. I will have the headliner replaced here soon.

I wonder if you will ever use the hardtop again? Seems unnecessary in Tucson. Sounds like a good trip that would have been a super trip with maybe 1 or 2 more days to relax enroute. Nice looking car and great color.
