Found mine on CL so I drove to the seller's house to inspect the top (condition of headliner, rubber gaskets, paint, etc.).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

+996 for your local CL. Found mine on CL so I drove to the seller's house to inspect the top (condition of headliner, rubber gaskets, paint, etc.). When all checked out, drove home with the top mounted on the car.
P.S. If you have not yet done so, check what kind of mounts are currently in your car (if it already has one) to make sure that the pins on the top you're buying will fit. Last but not least, also check that the rear window defroster works.
As Kromdom said, check that you have compatible mounts. My 2000 has bayonet mounts which I believe yours will have as well. Later models have a screw mount.

What is your exterior and interior color?
Mine is Black Metallic with Graphite Gray with a hoist. It's been hanging in my garage unused for at least 3 years. Hadn't really thought about selling it but might for the right price.
Contact me if you can not find a nice one, have an extra one with scratchs on the outside and very dirty on interior ( L92U ). They do pop up here from time to time, mostly in the $400-500 range.
If in your searches you come across one in atlas gray I'm on the hunt, and we're both in the southeast. If i see one in your color on my local CL, I'll repay the favor. That being said, having expected to really want one before buying a cab a couple weeks ago, I am impressed with how well insulated the soft top is. Maybe I don't need one after all. It would be nice to have the option though.
I literally just bought a 996 yesterday, it came with a hardtop which I was pleased about, I removed it today and drove all day. to be honest I wasn't bothered by the noise difference at all. though the engine and exhaust are much more noticeable IMO without it. could be a good thing :-)
However, as the weather was crap, when I got home my soft top had mud spray on it from the backroads I took. that for me is one reason i'll be putting the hard top back on, keep it nice and clean I figure. do need to get a stand for mine though !
I know of an atlas gray for sale here in Vancouver, BC. Would be an epic road trip to drive up and get it but nearly impossible to ship. They could probably store it for you until the weather gets better. Their cab was written off in an accident 6 months ago.
Mine was in LA and was a great trip there and back to get it.
I also paid $400 for mine, stand and cover included. I found it on CL.
One of the local indies had told me he bought a couple from a specialist parts outfit. If you have one that's sort of local to you, you might shoot them an email.
if you want one in great condition go to your local Porsche dealer and ask the service advisor if they have any abandoned 996 or 997 hard tops lying around and start by offering $500 and go from there
