Very deliberately tightened all clamps and plugged in all vacuum and electrical.

Adjust the plenum to what I thought was good and seated.

Suggestion
Slide both boots as far as possible onto the plenums, then work the manifold into one side, center, then slide the other boot over making sure it is centered, rotate the rubber boots all the way around (easy because of the silicone lube) to ensure they are not bunched, then rotate the rubber boots to the correct position and tighten the clamps.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I taped up my gashed oil filler tube to rule it out, no difference.
ETA... Update couple posts down
Put in a new starter...easy.
Can not get the stock plenum back in....
Whats the trick here ?
Leave couplers on plenum ? Manifolds ? mix ?
When I've gotten close the couplers are pinched in the plenum...
Help appreciated.
As I recall, this was a rather fussy job, I think what I did was put one coupler and screw clamps on the left plenum past its natural resting point, then put the other coupler and screw clamps on the right side of the throttle body past its natural resting point. Then you work the throttle body onto the coupler on the left plenum, then work the throttle body's coupler onto the right plenum. Finally, reposition the couplers so they land in their natural resting point, you should be able to feel it, and then tighten the clamps. Be sure to orient the clamp screw so that you can turn it sufficiently tight as they have a tendency to walk back out of reach as you tighten. Piece of cake, best of luck.
Leave couplers on the manifolds.
Insert the rightside first, then turn until the plenum is lined up on both sides.
The trick?
This tool!
Interior tool can help convince the rubber outside of the plenum on the left side.
Car kicked my *** today.
Starter went too easy, I should have known that was a bad sign.
Finally (thanks for the help) got the plenum in and everything hooked up. Start the car...dies right away. OK, must have forgot to plug something in or the plenum is jacked up, pull everything back apart. Adjust the plenum to what I thought was good and seated.
Go to put the airbox in enough to plug in the MAF and while I'm clicking the oil filler tube in I notice it is split 3/4 of the way around at one of the flex sections....AWESOME.
Say eff it, I'm at least going to make sure the plenum adjustment fixed my issue....NOPE.
So, looks like I have an oil filler tube replacement ahead of me and more work to confirm the starting issue is a huge vacuum leak cause I apparently suck at putting the plenum in.

The plenum is a pain to get centered, but it has to be done. Move both rubber boots as far towards the intake manifold as possible. Install plenum working with one side first, then the other side, then move the rubber boots towards the plenum and tighten the clamps, first on intake manifold then on the plenum. DO NOT forget the vacuum lines that attach to the rubber boots!
Does same thing with MAF unplugged.
I taped up my gashed oil filler tube to rule it out, no difference.
I'm about to start working my way backwards, I have messed with the plenum alignment a lot and it's not making a difference, not saying its not the problem but I've taken a fair amount of swings with no hits.
I have 1 vac line running to the drivers side coupler, its installed. No Vac lines running to passenger side coupler.
Kinda lost. The only time I have had behavior like this was after filling up with gas a couple weeks ago it would do something very similar, turn over and then die right away. I got it going with a healthy stab of the throttle then.
If I try to keep it going with the throttle now, it is very unresponsive, sputters a little then dies.
Cars are funny.
Took the plenum back out.
5 minutes to get back in. No wrestling for 3 hours. Very deliberately tightened all clamps and plugged in all vacuum and electrical.
Rigged air box to start and it fired right up.
Im thinking one of the couplers was slightly folded into the hard piping where I couldnt see.
New starter works awesome, nice to be able to enjoy it.
Thanks to all for the help.
Ill fix the oil filler tube when I feel like having banged up hands again.
Year/Model? E-gas calibration? Sounds like you have a massive vacuum leak, and it is difficult to center that plenum in the rubber boots. You have to re-check everything. You can leave the air filter off.
Those couplers can look like they're on right but a fold on the backside can be hard to detect. I just went through this with an AOS replacement a few weeks ago...
Cars can be frustrating, that's for sure!
One time I had a headlight bulb out on my driver's side. Just to check, I swapped the bulbs. The pass. side that was working now didn't work in the driver's side. So I swapped it back to the pass. side. Not working either.
After about an hour, I got frustrated so I decided to flick the bulb with my finger. Light turns on!
Worked for a few years after that.
I would love to know how you did this in 5 minutes. I am also stuck with not being able to get them back in. The driver side rubber boot does not have a raised center and can therefore be pushed all the way on to the plenum (sort of like a slip coupling in plumbing). The passenger side does have a raised rib/center and I can't force it over that. Is there a lubricant I should use?
I did go back to it (sans the beer). With the help of a silicone spray and a tire iron, I was able to do it. It still needs adjusting, but I was so happy I wanted to walk away with a win.
I remember, after replacing starter, spraying the outside of the plenums and the inside of the boots with silicone spray liberally. Helps to rotate the rubber boot in order to get the vacuum line attached, then rotate back to position. Kind of tricky but it works. Make sure those clamps are damn tight. As with all jobs in this area, plan on either or both the oil filler tube will crack and/or the AOS coolant plastic connector will break. Plan ahead for replacement. Get the R&S metal coolant connector. Worth the money.
