The backstory here, after buying a very clean car and driving it home from NOLA to ATL and driving around for a week there was a check engine light - took it to Wolfpen Auto (shoutout, these guys are awesome - if you’re in the ATL area definitely check them out).

On the dealer invoice from 2012 there is a line item that says Installed Single :IMS Single Row.

It was replaced by the dealer with a single row IMS for $665 cost of parts.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

The one item that took a while was having to get the LN engineering recommended engine testing done which would let us know if go/no go on the IMS permanent solution.

going to take a break from spending $ for a while but in about a year will be looking at replacing & upgrading the original suspension on the car as well as getting the 997 short shifter

also how many of you guys have replaced / upgraded suspension on the car, while the car is 22k years old its 38k miles young so wondering if thats something I need to think about.

Since they just replaced IMS with original single bearing 12 years ago does it smell right that the bearing needs to be replaced given it wasnt a permanent solution

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all! After always wanting a Porsche, I picked up a 14 Cayenne diesel as a road trip vehicle in 2019 off the CPO program and in 2021 added a Boxster GTS to the garage, it was a fun and really powerful car but there was always a thought in my head to drive a 911 so earlier this year I traded it in for a 991.1 C4S with PDK that I love. The power and engine sounds are incredible
I live in Atlanta and drive around a good bit plus enjoy mountain drives on the curvy roads. To evenly distribute miles and to solve for having a manual convertible, I picked up a 996 C4 with 38k miles on the clock, link here

the car is very clean and stock except an upgrade to Fabspeed cats
I love how analogue the car feels and its a great drive. The one thing I notice is the steering wheel is a tad bit less comfortable / less thick relative to the more modern vehicles Ive grown used to and my arms feel tired after longer drives - have any of you replaced the wheel for this reason and curious what you went with.
also how many of you guys have replaced / upgraded suspension on the car, while the car is 22k years old its 38k miles young so wondering if thats something I need to think about.
When I purchased my 2002 996 in 2017, the suspension needed replacing with only 50K miles on it.
This is due to age and not mileage.
Fresh control arms, control arm links and a new set of struts will make it feel like new. (coil overs will make it handle even better, but are not as comfortable IMHO)
Don't forget about tires, new tires will help the ride as well.
Consider having the steering wheel re-done or replaced.
There are more comfortable options out there as long as you don't feel the necessity to keep it all original.
Thank you - for the steering wheel I was thinking of more an OEM setup with the crest, I read a bit that the GT3 wheel is a good option but on the pricey side ($4k). Also heard good things about the DCT T96

the one question I have, car is currently in the shop to replace a leaky water pump that sprang after I bought it and drove it home and a CEL due to the second air system (not air pump but injection valve) and CV boot.while its in the shop, the indie did mention there is a leak coming from the IMS seal - they showed me when the car was on the mount, looked like a leak coming from the IMS hose. The original IMS was replaced in this car back in 2012 along with the RMS. It was replaced by the dealer with a single row IMS for $665 cost of parts. Do you guys agree that I need to go ahead and replace the IMS or is that extreme. Its a minor leak currently,
There was a leak running down one of the lines and the shop mentioned it may be coming from IMS or RMS but unclear what it is.
Since they just replaced IMS with original single bearing 12 years ago does it smell right that the bearing needs to be replaced given it wasnt a permanent solution
You should clarify what kind of IMS "replacement" was done. If it wasn't the LN Engineering IMS Solution, where the IMS bearing is replaced with an oil-fed bushing, it is not likely intended to be a permanent fix.
Most IMS replacements have a shelf life/replacement schedule of around 5 years. Most likely, unless yours is the IMS solution, it is overdue for replacement.
thank you. It was not the IMS Solution. On the dealer invoice from 2012 there is a line item that says Installed Single :IMS Single Row. The part cost was $665
Back then the labor cost $1,200 to replace both the IMS and RMS. This time around Im being quoted $3.4k in labor at $195 an hour for both IMS and RMS from an indie shop. They offered to take 10% off but $3k is still not cheap though understand its a big job
i asked the shop to take a pic of the leak so I can share on here

does it smell right that the bearing needs to be replaced given it wasnt a permanent solution
The bearing should be replaced - even the LN single row pro only has a 6 year 75k mi. warranty. If you want a permanent bearing that you wont need to replace again, go with the IMS Solution (LN Engineering/FSI). There are others that claim to be permanent as well, but none are plain bearings - they all have moving parts (***** or rollers)
thanks dporto. Im going to get the IMS Solution. The shop was recommending performing the detailed IMS Prequalification and will document all findings which costs almost $1,000. Then $5k all in for parts and labor for the IMS Solution. This is definitely an expensive job but the cost difference in parts is not huge to get the permanent fix, its really the labor
It will be worth it if you ever sell it or if you rebuild the engine.
If you sell, having The IMS Solution ends all of the questions about IMS bearing. (which one, when was it done, when does it need to be re-done)
The IMS Solution can be reused if you rebuild the engine.
Hi everyone just wanted to provide an update.
I finally got my new to me 996 C4 back after almost a month in the shop. The backstory here, after buying a very clean car and driving it home from NOLA to ATL and driving around for a week there was a check engine light - took it to Wolfpen Auto (shoutout, these guys are awesome - if you’re in the ATL area definitely check them out).
CEL was due to second air valve failure. Additionally had a leaky water pump and CV boot that was slinging grease. Signed up for these items to be repaired. While in the shop, it was discovered there was a potential RMS/IMS leak. Upon discovery I decided to have the IMS replaced with the LN Engineering permanent solution in addition to having the RMS replaced. While the engine was out also decided to replace the second air system and do some additional pro active maintenance. All in it was a $10k job but thrilled to have the car back and knowing I can drive it without having to worry about anything. Also had the PCCM installed which looks amazing.
for now just going to drive and enjoy and rotate the 996 with my 991.1 C4S. Ultimately I need to think long and hard if I wasn’t to keep the 991.1 - it’s a great machine but just doesn’t feel as special as the 996
going to take a break from spending $ for a while but in about a year will be looking at replacing & upgrading the original suspension on the car as well as getting the 997 short shifter
It is a great feeling when the pro-active stuff gets done. Make sure your guys, who installed the IMS Solution, register the bearing in the LN bearing registry. That way there is a recognized record that tops any piece of paper. And there should be a sticker from them to put on your car door or on inside rear deck to also show the work was done. Mine sits next to the manufacture data on the driver's door.
thank you for this. They do have the sticker, will have to put it on for me next time I’m there and are in the process of registering the bearing.
it looks like the IMS was about to give out, this bearing was 10 years old and started leaking.
this is a video of them working on my car

initially thought we were just doing the water pump, CVboot, fixing secondary air plus some holidays in between. The one item that took a while was having to get the LN engineering recommended engine testing done which would let us know if go/no go on the IMS permanent solution. If the engine wasn’t in good shape I’d have had to reevaluate. Those tests probably took 4 days. Some time to get the parts in. Overall it was a pretty big job but agree that it could have probably happened a bit faster. I didn’t help the cause because I added a few items to the shops’ work order such as PCCm+ install and went back and forth if I wanted to refresh the suspension now vs later. This was the biggest job I’ve ever done on a car so had more questions/back and forth
Awesome! I'm glad you got it back and it's ready to run blood mtn! There lots of Pcar people in the atlanta area. Meetups, rides or shows almost every weekend. There are a few atlanta porsche groups on facebook. I joined to learn about the events. Im in lithia springs ga.
Also the peachstate PCA is totally worth joining
