There is a top speed penalty when i run the cup wing in my car but the benifit of the down force is worth it in every corner i take over 70mph.

I have used Big Time the C4S brakes when some idiot darts out at the last second to pass a big semi.

Suggestion
If you run 225x40x18 and 285x30x18 on your car with Carrera 2s, you can easily fit 15mm spacers without a problem and it makes a huge visual difference.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I’m sure the Aero kit makes no difference to the performance of my Carrera 4 cabrio but I do like the stance that it gives the car.
So yea, I am wondering what you all think of wings on 996s. Wide bodies excluded, narrow bodies only
I have been thinking of getting a 996.2 style rear wing (not the taco wing) for my 996 c2... For track days of course (sureee)
I have been told that 911s look bad with wings, esp water cooled porsches. Many I talk to say it looks ricer. IDK though, a nice 996.2 with good stance is very hard to beat and I dont think a stock 996.2 NB C2 with no aero kit is better.
I even (badly) photoshopped a wing delete on a gt3 996 and IMHO it does not look as good!
What are yalls opinions on this!? Pictures always welcomed
Thanks!
I disagree with the folks telling you that a wing is ricer on a 996. It can look appropriate on our cars, and be functionally useful as well. I recommend you appropriately modify the aerodynamics in the front end to balance the aero - else youll suffer from endless understeer.
Ive considered adding a wing to my car, but never taken any meaningful steps towards doing so. As a kid, I remember hearing about the 996 and its active spoiler - a concept that amazed me at the time. I constantly find ways to justify keeping the active spoiler on the car because its still a really neat innovation in 2024.
For those that have switched to rear wings, do you guys notice any drag penalty, and are you able to quantify it? (Doesnt have to be extremely scientific, some top speed comparisons on the same track will satisfy me.)
Yes, wings add drag at higher speeds.
The 996.2 GT3RS wing adds more than the 996.1 Aerokit (Taco) wing, but creates a lot more downforce.
With the stock 3.6, you'll notice more drag which slows 0-130 significantly as measured with a Dragy. (Taco vs GT3RS...I haven't yet tested the base active aero with the Dragy)
I haven't done back to back tests with the 4.0, so I'm not sure how much it is affected, but there's still the same amount of drag.
The increased 4.0 HP helps to overcome it, though.
I never noticed the additional drag with either the 3.6 or 4.0 in day to day driving.
But I'm sure the Taco wing, or active aero base spoiler will work better than the GT3RS wing in 1-mile runs.(Texas Mile)
I'm considering trying all three at the Texas Mile so see.
For day to day around town driving, wings are just for looks.
Above 100, there's definitely more drag.
Bloku, the great thing about the 996 is it looks great dressed up in formal attire with full aero and the proper stance, in business attire w/o aero and the proper stance, or dressed down in its original casual attire. Comes down to the look you want.
But before you spend $10k on making it look pretty, I would highly suggest you bullet proof your engine first, then worry about lip stick and skirts.
That's a good and important point. You must balance the aerodynamics or you will have issues at higher speeds. The last thing you want is a lightened front end in the rain.
Can't say what the penalty of wings and front splitters on my car as that's the way my car comes, but at 70 mph on the right roads, tires, and the A/C off, I can easily exceed 30 mpg.
There is a top speed penalty when i run the cup wing in my car but the benifit of the down force is worth it in every corner i take over 70mph. Most of my aero is in my car to help on tracks like Warkins Glen.
I dont feel that the factory aero effects top speed near as much has the high cup wing.
I am also thinking of a new front bumper with better aero and a ducktail for the rear.
What brands do people recommend or to avoid?
I have followed advice from several listers about improving engine reliability first , then suspension upgrades. before body parts.
For wings and bumpers, I recommend:
MAShaw
http://www.mashaw.biz/
FVD
https://www.fvd.net/us-en/FVD512996G...able-wing.html
GT Racing
https://www.gt-racing.com/porsche-windows/
Jacquemond
https://www.jacquemond-france.com/uk...by-jacquemond/
I'd avoid:
Aliexpress
Duraflex
There are others available that I have no experience with.
One of the reasons I bought my 996.2 was to put a aero kit on it, but with a Taco Tail. Biggest regaret was not buying a OEM Taco for $600 a couple years ago before I even had my Targa
@Bloku_
I have an extra 996.2 GT3 wing, no deck-lid, just the wing. Let me know if you are interested and I’ll grab a few pictures.
BTW: h3ll yes on the 996 Aerokit
My son’s 996.1 and my silver GT3
That's essentially what my car is with a Aero front bumper and a RPM Technik CSR Evo duck tail. Tex gave the best options in his post since the CSR is NLA.
I added a front spoiler from Better Bodies and a rear ducktail from ebay , the ebay duck was made by a vendor in Florida . The body shop I use said the parts fit perfect with no issues . Just another option .
^^^ Thank you . You can't tell in the pic but I also have a Better Bodies rear diffuser installed . I have aftermarket GT3 style rocker covers still to be installed just haven't done so yet . Been toying with the idea of painting the mirrors red . Also have spare brake calipers to be painted red and installed . I like subtle changes , the red graphics are as radical as I will get .
When I first started looking for 996s, I had my heart set on a 4s. I went to my now friend's business and asked if he had one for sale. He told me he didn't, but that he had a C2 manual for sale in Polar Silver. I went back and checked it out and I immediately wanted it because it was an aero. I never knew about the aero, and it really changes the overall look of the car. And its a factory XAA car. Its not for everyone, but I like it.
My first love is the Taco, but the Carrera Aerokit spoiler is just the right amount of spoiler for me. Really I would prefer multiple decklids with varying spoilers...
I’m in the if it came from the factory as an aero car then great but to make a none aero car into one I’m not a fan
then I would go to a duck tail which I love
I agree with bmchan, no rear stuff needed.
Also EVOMMM-- I like the ducktail if you are going to have any structures on the back end.
The front splitter parts are very subtle and do no mess up the appearance, my opinion.
Another thought: In places like Calif. (experience) or crowded east coast with density (just a guess) more Highway Patrol per square inch, the car looks like a ticket magnet. The car is magnetic enough without looking like Ricky Racer in normal driving.
I recently drove through CA, NV, and UT to ID. CA had HPs out in near deserted roads in the southern desert, like a LOT of them. Near zero (1) in NV but only in the city LV, UT one in the desert, 3-4 around SLC, zero in ID. I had to be Mr. Putz-along driver in CA, done from past experience (20 years worth), open road across a desert valley was a blast (no cars in either direction), the canyon between NV and UT by St. George was a blast!, and then again Putz-along through a lot of UT.
The 996 gets noticed everywhere, people are drawn to it for some reason, dunno why. Perhaps is clean curved shape and "Different" headlights (yeah! I like them, anybody can have round headlights), and so few P-cars in mountain states. Be subtle, blend in if possible, open it up when coast is clear. Be nice. I let other folks go at stop signs, etc, because I don't want them behind me, gawking and run into my back end. Nose-bleed lifted trucks adding lots of speed just to be next to C4S on freeway, makes me uncomfortable. I have used Big Time the C4S brakes when some idiot darts out at the last second to pass a big semi. I don't want Nose-bleed behind me. Just my opinions and observations.
I don't do track days, so take my opinion as different from the DE folks.
YMMV
85eurocarrera - is that wing the factory 996.2 Aero wing? I connected with the guys at Suncoast and they said it won't fit the Targa because it won't clear the hatch window, but I don't see why that would be the case. I have a silver 02 Targa and your car with Aero is my inspiration! Also need to know what you used to lower it. Thank you!!
While wings arent my favorite look on the 996 to say they arericer is just silly. If you like how it looks thats all that really matters, as theres very little to no aero effect until youre going very, very fast 130-150 mph+ ?) There are many flavors of ice cream - just cause some of them suck doesnt mean that ice cream sucks
Life is bliss when you listen to yourself and not others. Drive and modify things in ways that make you happy. That goes for every facet of life.
While searching between 996/997's, the taco wing and aero front bumper set it apart and I wouldn't be in a 996 otherwise.
I vote Yay
and
Nay. As some know from other threads, I have two engine lids, one with a wing and one without. I change them out as the mood strikes me.
Do what
you
want.

Its a good thing Porsche made these aeros and made the 996 more iconic that set it apart from the others in 2000s. Birds tend to flock together and we like what we like
I didnt notice but to be honest. HMS isnt the best track to compare, I dont think I got past 110mph on either straight and youre hard on the brakes after turn 10(I think, first left turn after the back straight engine killer corner).
Also thanks for the compliments, shell look different with the E88s next year.
Independent of what aero a 996 owner may decide, the easiest and cheapest visual mod is to widen the stance with a set of front and rear spacers.
If you run 225x40x18 and 285x30x18 on your car with Carrera 2s, you can easily fit 15mm spacers without a problem and it makes a huge visual difference.
Hey GC! I am in complete agreement. These cars look good so it does not suffer from "lipstick on a pig" syndrome. I actually just put 15 mm rear and 8mm front and the stance is perfect now.
But yea, I post this, forget, and come back only to see the tread blew up
4 pages! So seems like
15% dislike the wing, 25% are 1/2 and 1/2, and 60% say yes yes yes...
I can't say that we are the best of audiences though as we are SICK with it! We all probably loved matchbox, hot wheels, or whatever and what does nearly every one of those have? A WING! I swear the sports car manufactures' business plans go something like "get em hooked on hotwheels" lol. ALL HAIL THE WING!!!
I will keep my eye out for aero bits as the best method will be to simply have two (or three) different wings and swap as needed
I have one other question though, does anyone make side skirts that are somewhere between the aero kit and the C4s side skirts?

Yea I've been wanting to see a full side profile with the .1 Aero skirts and front bumper. Mine currently has some sort of Turbo spoiler that I've not seen on another Carrera anywhere ever, and I'm not really a fan.
