Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Its a great combination that Ive used on several cars including my old Toyota winter beater
Leading evidence: 'Use on several cars including my old toyota winter beater' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'third quarter in 1998 during the my99 production' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run eggs" backlash among purists' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
Don't hold me to this, but I believe it was the third quarter in 1998 during the MY99 production.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Suggestion
There seemed to be a lot of pressure to differentiate it from the Boxster and minimize the "running eggs" backlash among purists.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

My 99 996.1 has the original taillights with the orange marker across the top. But Ive noticed some other .1 models with the updated, clear top marker in place. Looks better. I was just curious when this update happened.
Had anyone done the update on their 996.1? Recommendations?
thanks!
Don't hold me to this, but I believe it was the third quarter in 1998 during the MY99 production. There seemed to be a lot of pressure to differentiate it from the Boxster and minimize the "running eggs" backlash among purists. Therefore, they removed the orange lower section in the headlight enclosure as well as the upper in the rear taillights. This has also become one distinguishing factor with "early build" 996.
The folklore is that prior the Summer break of 98 (8/98) is when all the amber and 993 era parts were used, and 9/98 and on were smoked and red.
@FlattestSix
whats the date on your VIN tag?
My late 10/98 had the silver lights, I seem to remember reading the switch was during October or late September '98.
Interestingly, you could have clear front indicators before then, as they were standard on Litronic-fitted cars (and were then combined with amber rears).
Got it off the internet - it's what I want mine to look like eventually. Same spec (arena on graphite).

I bought my early build (2/98) despite the amber lights. One of the first things I did was switch to clear. Front, turn signal and rear. The fronts were new Boxster lights. They were way cheaper than 996 units.
BUT after cleaning up the originals I decided to switch back. The original ambers just seem to add character. But I have to admit that the clear rear lights looked nice with Arctic Silver.

I so badly wish that you could use the amber .1 tail lamps for the .2 C4S.
I cant tell you how to live your life, but keep the ambers. They really date the early 996s in a good way.
