Although Audi recommends using a nylon bristle wheel, I haven't been able to find one made outside of China that doesn't flap apart.

However, overall removal requires time, and once one uses the solvents, be sure to remove all solvents and residue completely to avoid contamination of the newly applied sealant.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am replacing timing chain wear pads on my 996.1 engine and need to clean the old sealant from the cam covers. The two surfaces have a cross hatched surface that traps to old sealant. I have scraped the surface to remove the large pieces but I can't get the small sealant out of the very small groves. I have tried alcohol and brake cleaner but they don't cut it. Do I really need to remove this small amount? Suggestions?

POST 2Original post

I have used a brass bristled brush on the cam cover to remove old sealant. Be sure to clean it good afterward. I wipe the sealing surface with Acetone to clean it before I put on the new sealant. Mark

POST 3Original post

Brake clean and a stainless wire brush. If a little bit remains in the machining grooves its fine. Do not use a 3m pad or a wiz wheel unless its rated for aluminum. They can eat into the surface and introduce contaminates into the motor

POST 4Original post

3M makes a general-purpose adhesive cleaner by the quart or spray can that I use to remove old sealant residue. Trichloroethylene is another solvent that swells silicone up to make it better to remove.... use it and the 3M products in a ventilated area. Although Audi recommends using a nylon bristle wheel, I haven't been able to find one made outside of China that doesn't flap apart. However, overall removal requires time, and once one uses the solvents, be sure to remove all solvents and residue completely to avoid contamination of the newly applied sealant.

POST 5Original post

Brass brush, green scotchbrite, acetone, and elbow grease.
