Replace window mechanism may still not send "the down signal."

He mainly builds Porsche race engines, so I am guessing he missed the "recalibration." I will try to go to the shop and put all 4 windows down, and then see if the lid moves...but the replaced window mechanism may still not send "the down signal."

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Have a 2001 996 cabrio. My tech just finished replacing the right rear window controller after having it rebuilt by the fine folks in Arizona. He left a message, "all done." Went to pick it up, he said, "Well, the lid that covers the convertible top will not extend or close. Had to use the manual mechanism to close the top and the lid." Shucks, after 2 1/2 weeks of "no Porsche," I am having major withdrawal issues. He said to leave the car and he will try to find the "gear." I have looked a factory diagram, but cannot determine, what raises and lowers the lid. My local parts house has the diagram, http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=811-12 A repair kit (15) looks like the spindle with the gear he said was plastic and stripped. He said the electric motor is running. Is this the gear I need? Thanks, Grant Atlanta,Ga

POST 2Original post

The motor that drives the convertible clamshell lid is Part (2) in your diagram link. It connects to pinion gear and double- rack gear drive system (4) via a square connecting shaft, which looks like the repair kit (15), or maybe part (22). It's hard to tell from this diagram. I have some photos of the system in an old thread, showing whats inside the black plastic housing (4), and maybe some other details. Look at post # 17 HERE .

POST 3Original post

Had this issue and brought the car to the dealer for re-calibration Thank you

POST 4Original post

One more thing. If something broke in the drive system, it's likely it was caused by a jam-up of some kind. My guess would be inside the rear "sliders" that actually move the clamshell arms. If you don't fix the root cause, It could happen again.

POST 5Original post

Just a thought, I don't think the top start to move until windows are down. Maybe the rear window control unit that he installed/repaired is not sending signal indicating the windows are down?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks All, I sent the information to the tech. He mainly builds Porsche race engines, so I am guessing he missed the "recalibration." I will try to go to the shop and put all 4 windows down, and then see if the lid moves...but the replaced window mechanism may still not send "the down signal." I'll post the results when it is fixed. Grant

POST 7Original post

With all respect, don't you think you might need a technician that specializes in convertible system repair? I've owned many convertibles and I have found that sending these cars to just any shop is not smart. I either take them to the dealership or have a shop that is specializes in convertibles for that particular brand.

[QUOTE=gbright;15213739]Have a 2001 996 cabrio. My tech just finished replacing the right rear window controller after having it rebuilt by the fine folks in Arizona. if all was working correctly prior to the rear window work, then my bet is, they "effed up" the installation work. With the top completely down the rear windows are NOT supposed to operate. Hope you sort out the problem.
