No matter what other lifting method I used prior to this the side to side angling of the car was unnerving, both going up and coming down.

Ordered a Rotary lift as thats what all he shops around me use but there ended up being a beam running above where my right post would be bolted down.

Introduction was delayed as the safety standards were revised and BendPak had to go through third party testing on all of their existing lifts before new products could be brought on line.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finally got around to putting in my portable 2 post lift this weekend. Should make changing the water pump & thermostat a breeze! If I remember correctly, I have my posts spaced at ~130" apart from their outside edges.
Congrats! You're going to love it.
I had the prior version for a few years, and it made every job easier (perfect for 996 engine drop, amongst other things). The height is ideal for wheel, tire, brake, suspension and bumper work. It was just a tad too low to do work on sitting upright underneath but worked in a pinch for most things.
This version looks like everything good about the old one, but with ALI certification and automatic locking stops. The older style had a steel round rod that you had to manually insert into holes as the safety - the style you got is much better.
They are designed to fit in an 8' tall homeowner height garage ceiling. The max lift is 48", so it has some limitations. If you have minimal headroom, it is a terrific setup. It is also portable, you can wheel it out of the way when you don't need it. Setup and teardown takes 10 min or so.
Sounds like it might work for me.
I've been thinking about getting a QuickJack, but this 2-post might be better.
I have a 2 car garage, but only have parking space for one vehicle due to my three large toolboxes computer stand (with oscilloscope) and battery charger/starter, AC refrigerant recovery machine, sand blaster, welder, tire rack, portable AC unit, jack and jack stands, and huge trash and recycle bins.
So I'd need something non-permanent.
Hoping to move some of my tools to a permanent shop location soon.
I'll take a measurement when I get home this evening. I have a 17'x19' 2 car garage in LA, so it having a small footprint was a key purchasing decision.
There is enough room for my to walk between the wall between and the post on the other side, and enough room for me to open the door on my side locker without hitting the lift. This is what's next to the lift, so just enough room for everything and having enough working room. In my original post I said ~130", that is in reference from the outside sides of the base of the lift; in other words the widest measurement you can take. I plan on routing the hydraulic lines through the ceiling and possibly wall mounting the pump to clear up some floor space. My ceiling isn't terrible tall, and there is a still a good amount of space. When I re-finished my garage, I installed a lift master 8500 (wall mount unit) to clear my overhead space.
Planning on welding up an extra low stool so I can still wheel around under it while sitting. That being said, the bottom of the engine will still be very accessible from the rear of the car and spark plugs will be a breeze once you remove the rear wheels.
Yep, the safety latch is what drove me to spend the few extra bucks. No regrets there! Bought it during the labor day sale; saved a few hundred bucks and got free shipping. Didn't get around to putting it up till after finishing most of the garage reno.
I started at looking high end jacks/jack stands. Then that put me in the Quick Jack price territory. Then for a few hundred more, you can get a maxjax. Add a few hundred more, and you can get the Danmar M6. At least that's how I rationalized it.
See my previous post; definitely worth waiting for a sale!
P.S. put the trash cans outside!
Not allowed to put them out front except for pickup day.
Putting them in the backyard is a pain.
The garage is the most convenient place for my wife.
Not so convenient for me.
Well I need to get something to make working on cars at home easier.
I'm no spring chicken, so I have to work smarter.
Laying on my back under a car for an extended time is a bit tougher on me than it used to be.
The QuickJack is a little better than using jack stands, but not a lot.
Sitting on a stool while working underneath would be nice.
The MSRP of the box is more.
Buuuut no one pays MSRP for a box. I bought mines at the Music Metal Franchise trade show. $4k rebate + 25% off. Brought everything down to roughly $19.5k for the 84" roll rab, SS power top, work center top, and right hand power locker. If you ever drive head up my way and are in town, send me a PM and stop by!
Ah! I'm envious. I've been pretty close to buying a Danmar Max Jax several times when I see them pop up on Craigslist. Is this the newest version of it?
This has been my goal for a looooong time, even before college. It's been a ton of fun! Got one more thing I'm trying to figure out where to fit. I got a 60" x 30" x 2.25" blanchard ground steel plate I'm planning on making into a fab table. Still need to throw it on a mill at work and drill/tap/chamfer fixture holes. Will be nice to indulge myself in most of my hobbies under one roof!
I'd like to replicate Jack's garage.
I still need to do some cleaning out of unneeded items first though.
I've gotten rid of a lot of stuff, but more stuff keeps showing up.
I also have several boxes of parts just waiting for the customer to show up so I can install them on their car.
Weekend before last I had a customer no-show on me again.
I've had their brake pads and rotors setting in my garage waiting on them since April.
I like Jack's philosophy of having nothing on the floor...I just haven't quite gotten there yet.
One of these weekends I need to tell everyone, "I'm not doing any car repair this weekend, I'm cleaning out the garage."
But the last couple of times that I did that, my wife distracted me and nothing got done in the garage.
Yes, MaxJax is a Danmar product. From the images they look more or less identical, but I'm sure there are differences that lead to a separate product line.
Yes. Each post is bolted down with 5 bolts (into Wej-It anchors). The posts have wheels on them. You tilt them up onto the wheels and move them out of the way.
Congratulations. Nicely done. Once you go with an actual lift you won't know why you waited so long. We are fortunate to have a lot of variety to choose from.
Mine is in a nine foot ceiling with a 22 by 23 foot floor.
There are lots of 4100 lumen 5000K 2 bulb by four feet fixtures on the web (about $25 each) to bring daylight into your work space.
Just measured. With the jack sitting on the highest safety pins, it measures 44" between oil drain plug and the floor. Distance between outside base edge to outside base edge is 125".
Both car and lift look great. Question though, are there added supports on the lift to prevent it from tipping over or the bolts to the ground are the only ones keeping it upright?
Ah! Ok. They've rebranded their ALI certified product. There used to be MaxJax standard, and then another one that was more expensive and featured ALI certification and auto locking. I forget what they called it, but the naming was confusing enough that I contacted support to better understand the differences. It looks like I wasn't alone, so they renamed it the Dannmar M-6.
Very cool! I hope to get one sooner or later. Also, thanks for posting the width that you set the posts apart.
It's worth mentioning that the concrete where your posts are needs to have a minimum compression strength of 3000psi and minimum 4" thick.
Max capacity of this lift is only 6000 lbs. The PD58 wej-it anchors are listed as having a 16,500lb ultimate tensile strength in 4000 psi concrete. Working loads should be kept to under 4125lbs
per anchor.
Not sure what this translates to exactly in 3000 psi concrete, but you have 5 anchors per post. If each post will see a maximum of ~3000lbs, the lift is operating within a large margin of safety. With the liability involved, I'm sure the product has a comfortable factor of safety.
Six 3/4 by 6 inch cement anchors 5 inches deep across 12 by 17 base plates. Rated for 7000 pounds.
With the full "to ceiling" height I opted to tie it into the joists as well because ... What is too safe? See attached pictures. It is very stable.
BendPak (no affiliation) makes this specific model in different heights. But this option is permanent on the floor. The ones that can unbolt and move have advantages of their own.
The top cross bar holds the ram and cables so there is nothing on the floor. The extra (small) padded bar just below the top trips a limit switch to prevent topping out the car during an inattentive raise.
No matter what other lifting method I used prior to this the side to side angling of the car was unnerving, both going up and coming down. There is no way to make jack stands stable with a side load. And the higher you go the more side leverage you get. A proper lift is peace of mind wrapped together with proper access to the bottom of the car.
We are fortunate to have so many options amongst a number of manufacturers.
Last year we completed construction of our new home.
Wife wanted an open floor design, I wanted a three car garage with 14 foot cielings.
We ended up increasing the size of the house so that the garage wouldnt look out of place and unbalanced next to the house lol
Ordered a Rotary lift as thats what all he shops around me use but there ended up being a beam running above where my right post would be bolted down. Ended up cancelling the Rotary order and bought a Atlas 2 post lift.
Ended up saving some money and so far I have no complaints.
Grand Prix. A relatively new offering. Been out for about a year. Introduction was delayed as the safety standards were revised and BendPak had to go through third party testing on all of their existing lifts before new products could be brought on line.
