Hey some people like to clean the wheels everytime they come back from a ride, others, they put a car cover in the garage which I dont do.

You can replace the frunk and engine compartment lights with LEDs if you want.

If you grounded it prior to turning off the ignition, it would run the radiator fans for 10 minutes.

Not if you know where to buy the good stuff - the locals refer to it as "day-tay-cuarenta" - which has been tested by beigepebble to have equal or superior slipperslickyness and an additive load proved to reduce breakyness; extended duty cycles mean less replaciness.

I like using a floor fan, on the hottest of summer days after a run.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, new in the Porsche world.
I have this thing that I like to do when I get home and pull the car in the garage to open the engine lid and let the engine to cool off with a floor fan that I always keep in the garage. I dont know why I like doing this but I do it on my vintage vw's as well. Its not because the garage is enclosed or because the garage gets hotter, its because I just like doing it, it made feel like Im helping the engine to cool off better.
Its like some people like to turn their heads after they park their cars on the street. I guess is love for the car.
In any case, I see the engine lid compartment has a light bulb and even though the switch is off it remains on, so today I decided to look and I remove the light bulb and let the engine cool off with the engine lid open and the fan. The question I have is, even removing the light bulb, is the battery draining current ? I could kill the battery leaving the engine lid opened even thought I removed the light bulb ? Im not sure how the system works on this car so any help would be greatly appreciated. If it becomes any issue I can always put the light bulb back and close the engine lid but Im guessing it should be OK.
Thanks
i pop lid every return home sometimes add fan to cool motor. P car crazy yes but I do enjoy and take special car of my toys.
Heck, sometimes I'll pop to lid at lunch.
Mind you I have several P cars and none are daily drivers so each get all the love and attention a special car deserves.
Dont flame me. My cars are very special.
The light on the engine lid will turn itself off after some timeout. Can't remember but it's something like tens of minutes. You won't drain your battery much.
When the temp gets to a certain level, the car will actually turn fans on to help cool things down after being shut off. I've heard it do it. I believe its due to heat soak setting in after you park.
Fun fact - my FD RX-7 had a special lead off the ECU. If you grounded it prior to turning off the ignition, it would run the radiator fans for 10 minutes.
I totally agree with you and Im glad Im not the only here doing that. Same here, No daily driver. I have to see what the other member said about the light going off after 10 minutes, I have not tried that.
Good that you give some love to you car like I do. Hey some people like to clean the wheels everytime they come back from a ride, others, they put a car cover in the garage which I dont do.
Thanks
yeah, my car did that in the summer. Went in the garage to grab a beer and I could hear the fans going...wtf...I pulled out the manual to see if that was normal....yup...normal! lol
Power managment feature should turn off light in about 2 hours. If you open the hood and then set the alarm, light will go out in about 20 minutes - either way not enough power draw to affect battery.
I'm going to guess that you don't make sure you're parking your tires on a fresh spot every time?
Put a hose in the snorkel and pour water on top of the motor it to cool it off more efficiently.
nor do i worry about the parking angle/driveway tilt, phone location, anything oil related ,visor stickers ,wheel crests facing tire valves,.........but the bar gets a good laugh over these
......and the biggie.......taking a picture every time they park their princess car in a strange place
Well you arent hurting anything I guess, but damn you sure are doing anything to help it either. The fan in the engine bay does this for you if required.
I like using a floor fan, on the hottest of summer days after a run. Helps to pull some BTUs out of the air conditioned garage before I close the main overhead. Maybe a 1/2 hour. Engine lid closed. Fan right under the front bumper. Blows the heat out the back end and out the garage.
Just the opposite on the first start of the Spring driving season. Kick up the heated garage to about 78 and use a small ceramic heater against the oil pan. The night before. Everything is toasty warm. About 120. Heck, even a strategically placed 100-300 watt shop light can work wonders for that first start after a 5 month winter hibernation.
I find it's most efficient to drop the engine every time I return home, for cooling purposes. In winter I do the same, except I drop the engine and then wrap it in thermal blankets. But only after preparing a sleepy time tea for the car. Can't be too careful with these engines forged from artisan blown glass....
I usually treat mine to a warm Tahitian volcanic clay rub-down before gently massaging the engine block with Chilean kumquat seed oil that has been lovingly heated to 98.6 degrees in the sacral dimples of an Andean grandmother. Then, and only then, do I place slivers of cucumber on both headlights and tuck it in for a snug night's sleep in its bespoke Carrera White double-**** terrycloth car cover.
Not if you know where to buy the good stuff - the locals refer to it as "day-tay-cuarenta" - which has been tested by beigepebble to have equal or superior slipperslickyness and an additive load proved to reduce breakyness; extended duty cycles mean less replaciness. Majestic, fictitious adjectives can't be wrong.
This chart should help:
Although that graph is quite convincing, Jakob Tollwut clearly illustrates the relationship between the suspension of pectin particles in kumquat oil and the rapid breakdown of key engine components in his "Porsche Geflgelreferenz".
Momma...just killed my car
CEL went red, hit the throttle, now its dead.
Momma...Porsche had just been bought!
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.
Mommma! Oooh ooh ohhhhhhh!
Didn't mean to kill my car, sometimes wish I'd never bought one at all!
Raising the deck like to cool the engine disengages the operation of the fan. Therefore, you are attempting to cool your engine with static air, whereas, if you left the deck lid down and allowed the fan to engage, you are then cooling your engine with the same temp air, albeit, air that being forcibly oscillated.
Of course, you could argue that the static air in the engine compartment is much hotter than it would be if the deck lid were raised. I would still opine that the air being circulated is still much cooler than the engine temp. Therefore your engine is still cooling.
However, the major reason for not leaving your deck lid raised is that you are greatly increasing your risk of engine intrusion by mice. As we all know, mice can create way more damage to your engine than the incredibly normal process of driving your car, then parking your gar in the garage...
Two schools of thought on this:
1) open the hood and let heat rise out of the engine with convection pulling heat up from the bottom (headers) and rising over the engine
2) keep hood closed and let engine compartment fan push outside air into the engine compartment and drive hot air out the bottom.
I've done it both ways and can't really tell if one is better than the other.
BTW, mice can get into the engine compartment whether the hood is opened or closed - amazing the openings they can squeeze through.
If you smear peanut butter along all the body lines, this will keep deer mice near to eat the insects that would otherwise destroy the interior and small crevaces.
Next, release a couple ball pythons, this will help regulate the mice so they don't overpopulate.
Finally, if you want to keep the circle of life going, release a falcon or hawk (can only be one) locally to maintain the snakes.
Not only is your 996 protected from all animal intrusion, you've created a whole new ecosystem.
Anyone serious about territory is already on top of this.

Quote of the day: "Dog is my copilot"
Depends if one would like a small mouse inside their personal ball python..., euphemism? Not sure what that means, not a eugugolizer or eugugely reader if that's what you're referring to.
I'm digging the whole Garage Ecosystem idea. I kill scorpions in my garage all the time. Although they are not yet a known threat to my cars, I figure that places me at the top of my little ecosystem.
Scratch that. That would be Mrs. Gonzo...
Do you rotate the key to off, then move it back over and wait for an oil level reading while cleaning any particulate matter off the stereo controls, air vents & flat surfaces?
When parking in the garage overnight I jack up all four corners and put the car on jack stands, open the engine lid so it will cool off and pop the trunk in case the battery goes dead overnight. I also roll down the windows about 2 inches and lock the car so it won't drain the battery. Then I cover the front and rear windows with aluminum foil, smear petroleum jelly on the headlights so they won't fog up. Finally I run two tubes down the oil filler pipe and hook up an oil heater pump so the oil is warm when I start the car in the morning. All this really helps...please listen and understand.
Edited - because I also failed to mention that I put a TV in front of the car and tune in to the weather channel so the car won't feel lonely in the garage. One cannot just be too careful and considerate regarding their car.
Not unless it's old-growth, carbon-neutrally-harvested, grain-fed hormone-free free-range 2x8's. Anything less would be...ugly*.
*Usage note: Ugly in this case is used as a Southern grandmother would use it: to denote something socially unacceptable AND unmentionable, i.e. "Oh, she was talking ugly. Bless her heart, don't you give it another thought. Here, eat this pie. You'll feel better when you've got some meat on those bones."
It's actually board from rich mahogany that's been soaking in the bottom of the Chattanooga river for what only appears to be 1,000 years.
Did I stop there? Of course not.. We modified that ****. Triple premium Johnny Walker lacquer, oven baked with a hard torch burn (aesthetics).
Only issue here is the vast amount of soaked panties on the front window the following morning.
