I use an old 18V Dewalt which can be found for under $100.
Leading evidence: 'Use 18v dewalt' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use 18v dewalt' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

To prevent damage to the seals when using an impact gun, do it in short bursts.

Compress the springs and if necessary you can try to hold the shaft with a plumber's pipe wrap wrench..the kind that uses a rubber type belt to prevent scoring of the shaft.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I recently bought some JRZ RS2 coilovers from a forum member and they came mounted with spherical top mounts. Before I install them onto my car I want to add bump stops and dust boots to the shocks but I'm not sure how to remove the top mounts. Does anybody know how to prevent the piston from rotating while turning the nut at the top of the shock?
Cheers,
Dave
Thanks for the replies. I do not have access to an impact gun unless I go to a service garage. Is there another way to get them off? In the instructions for JRZ it says that impact guns are use at your own risk. Seems like there must be another way.
The only other way to do it that doesn't involve an impact gun or vise grips is to install the suspension on the car and loosen the nut with the weight of the car on it. Though, this usually only works with rubber top mounts, not spherical.
You need an impact gun.
To prevent damage to the seals when using an impact gun, do it in short bursts. Don't just go to town on the nut and let the shaft spin, that's what does the damage.
You are aware that the springs need to be compressed prior to removing the top mounts? Otherwise that's going to come flying apart with enough force to do some damage. Compress the springs and if necessary you can try to hold the shaft with a plumber's pipe wrap wrench..the kind that uses a rubber type belt to prevent scoring of the shaft. With the spring compressed and a top torque of only 37 ft lb, you should be able to get the nuts loose.
Also take a look at the top of the damper shafts. Many manufacturers put a like a allen hex key slot in the top end of the shaft so you can stop it from spinning.
the shock is normally already in the car. I found there is 2 ways to break the top nut. With the car on the ground, it will break, and with the car jacked off the ground, it will usually break. I try it both ways and it always works
