I recently replaced all 3 of these on my 996 and the cost for excellent condition used parts for all 3 was less than $500 and that includes a brand new OEM gearshift ****, not used on that one.

Suggestion
I have been looking around SoCal and I can tell you from what I have seen on Autotrader and Craiglist that I would expect this to be listed for about $18,000 if it did not have the IMS fixed and it is in otherwise clean condition with decent service history.
Leading evidence: 'Replace 3 of these' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ims refresh' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean condition' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
That car needs engine mounts and likely an IMS refresh to be safe.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
Long time follower, first time poster. I have been locked in on getting a 996 for a year or so. I currently have a classic mustang and have enjoyed it but looking to sell it and get into something different.
A local dealership that specializes in luxury/sports cars recently posted a 2000 Black/Tan 6spd man. with 105k miles. The car looks to be stock, besides aftermarket wheels, and shows well. There is a little wear on the driver's seat bottom but it has a lot of miles and looks very good.
I have lurked on the 996 forum for months so I'm well aware of the IMS issues and would have my indy mechanic check out the car before making an offer. If the car has a clean history and is as solid as it looks, what would a fair range of prices be for this make/model/year etc? Let's assume the IMS has not been done (which I will confirm before moving forward).
Thanks!
For a point of reference my 2000 cab manual with 102k on the clock with hardtop and good service history, 1 owner I paid $14,800
The IMS and clutch hadn't been done on mine either.
At a dealer they probably will quote you low 20's for that car which probably means they picked it up on a trade in for very low teens. I'd expect to pay mid to high teens for it. What part of the country are you in? I just traded in my 2000 C2 for an upgrade to a 4S. IMS, clutch, RMS had all been taken care of.

Looks to have litronics, full leather interior, 3 spoke wheel along with a CDR220, that is fairly well optioned. No PSM, but maybe that is a positive for you.
I would deduct for the garbage wheels. Decent set of replacement factory 18 wheels will run you a grand. Most guys would deduct for the wood kit too.
Snap a pic of the underhood option list, that is where you find how to price a used 996. Options make the p car. (and the owner, if you are into the club thing)
I would personally pay up to $18k for that car because it's a wonderful interior with full leather plus premium wheels.
That car needs engine mounts and likely an IMS refresh to be safe. So all in maybe $20k for a good looking 100k 996.
If the woodwork needs to be refinished sub out $500-1,000. Overall it looks like a beautiful example. Good luck & nice work finding it.
There are a couple of threads on here with real numbers on what people have paid, mine included (99 C2 tip with 145k mi @ $9500 private sale) with nearly no service history. Roll of the dice on my part.
Unless they are providing a real warranty why pay the dealer markup?
This is not a rare car and can be found sometimes with good service and ownership history. IMHO I wouldn't want to be into this car for much more than 12-14k$ including dealer markup.
You state you are going to get a PPI and you can carfax it to get an idea of ownership history.
I'm curious what the ask price is. Not showing on the website.
I just got off the phone with a dealership and the car already sold earlier this week, they just haven't updated the website yet. They sold it for $18,000. It did not have the IMS done.
Thanks everyone for the insights. This site will certainly help me feel more comfortable when I do find the right car and pull the trigger on it.
Out of all the vehicles that the seller is offering online this is the only one that has "call for price" noted. Every other vehicle has a price noted.
There's really nothing special about this one unless this combo speaks to you but I do like the interior too. Maybe because mine is grey.
There are many 996's available where you can speak with the PO, obtain service history and go into the new auto relationship with confidence and optimism. Since I don't see any records and other paperwork in any dealer pics and really no description its pretty safe to assume that this was an auction car and when vehicles go to auction all the paperwork that we would see a value in are thrown away.
As previously noted it looks like it needs motor mounts and that visible clue as well as the tear in the driver's seat makes me wonder about what is not visible. It looks like they are trying to flip this thing without putting anything into it. If I were the seller I would at least get the driver's seat bottom restitched, but not even that.
Did you see this car in person? Does the paint in person look better than the paint on the frontal shot?
There's a lot that causes me concern here but that's just me maybe.
EDIT: You posted up that the car sold, I think you did well to miss out.
Technically it was a dealer, but it was his personal car. So not off a lot.
I tend to avoid dealers now, so done with hard sell tactics and people pretending to be my best friend for 2 hours until they get my $$$
I'd avoid anything with that fake wood, it just ends up cracking and cost a fortune to replace...
Now this would be worth a look

I don't know if that's really a good reason to avoid the car. The mileage is high, I think that's the main concern.
I only see wood on the steering wheel, gearshift **** and parking brake handle. I recently replaced all 3 of these on my 996 and the cost for excellent condition used parts for all 3 was less than $500 and that includes a brand new OEM gearshift ****, not used on that one.
I went to the dealer website to take a look at that car. The carfax reports a total in 2006. It has been recently rebuilt. It also doesn't seem to have many options. That's the reason it's priced low.
