Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Dont forget to put a smear of oil on the gasket for a proper seal and fill the filter with clean oil so there is no momentary lapse of oil on first start.
Leading evidence: 'Clean oil so there is no momentary lapse of oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean oil so there is no momentary lapse of oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

First time oil change for me (have to start somewhere, right?), my '98 Coupe has the IMS Solution, so a spin-on filter adapter.

The one piece of info I don't have is the tightening procedure for the filter itself, I've read a number of things (like finger-tight then mark and turn another 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn), but I'm still a little confused.

Suggestion
Use the instructions on the filter, from memory it's until it's screwed in place then + 3/4 of a turn hence the 3/4 on the filter itself.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First time oil change for me (have to start somewhere, right?), my '98 Coupe has the IMS Solution, so a spin-on filter adapter.
I've got the oil (don't want to start a debate on that, so I'll not disclose), a new crush washer for the pan bolt (which I believe is an LN magnetic plug, 19 ft-lb or 25 Nm spec), and a Wix 51348 filter.
The one piece of info I don't have is the tightening procedure for the filter itself, I've read a number of things (like finger-tight then mark and turn another 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn), but I'm still a little confused.
The Wix filter has "3/4" stamped on the base, which could be the indicator of the above method, or something else.
I don't want to tighten it so much that it takes the spin-on adapter with it when it's removed at the next oil change.
I'd appreciate some advice.
Use the instructions on the filter, from memory it's until it's screwed in place then + 3/4 of a turn hence the 3/4 on the filter itself.
Dont forget to put a smear of oil on the gasket for a proper seal and fill the filter with clean oil so there is no momentary lapse of oil on first start. Normal car things apply as it's still a car...
3/4 of a turn after the seal touches is what I do.
I have Napa 1348 and Wix 51348 filters.
They both say 3/4 on them.
...and yes put a bit of fresh oil on the rubber seal like Dan said.
...and like Dan said, fill it with some oil, let it burp, then add a little more...rinse and repeat until it is almost full
Success!
The old filter un-spun easily. Had to jack the right side a little to fit the catch pan under and reach in to remove the plug and old filter, but let it down for the actual draining wait time.
Couple of tiny shards on the plug magnet, although this engine has had trouble in the past (new short block due to failed wrist pin in 2011, PO). I'm not concerned, the new short block has Nickies, JE pistons etc. and was disassembled less than a year ago and quite clean. This was a 5000km oil change.
It took about 11L of oil to the dip-stick midpoint, although my driveway is very slightly angled and it will read a bit low.
Started it, oil pressure came up after a second or two and stayed there.
Thanks for your help.
Unless you have a 2 quart deep sump kit installed, you’re overfilled, which is bad for the AOS.
Does the bottom of you’re engine have a spacer like this?
Actually I screwed up my basic arithmetic. I had 2x new 6L oil containers, and one has about 2L left in it. I checked very carefully as I know about the dangers of overfill. Both the dipstick and the electronic gauge are showing approximately mid-range.
On my first short trip out I was getting a low reading on the electronic gauge in a store underground carpark, which I expect would be almost exactly level. Topped it up a little when I got home, to mid-range.
Mine seems to burn around 1L / 2000km, there's never any evidence of leaks on the ground in my driveway.
