I'd bought tubes ('99) and plugs, but not coils given the price, I'd read to only change cracked ones.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My first 996 spark plug change, working my way through the driver's side (remove that muffler, folks, way easier) and I pull out one coil and notice that it has a piece missing from what would be the bottom seal. See pics attached. Missing piece is in tube, which I think I can remove fairly easily, but would you re-use the coil? It is in otherwise good shape. Thanks for any advice...

POST 3Original post

I would say no. Also when changing the spark plugs I would also change the coils....you will notice a difference in performance.

POST 4Original post

If it were my car after finding that, I would go the whole hog and change everything. To remove the tube use a boat plug holding it slightly to one side to get a grip on the inside of the tube. I suspect that if one coil is damaged, odds are, others are not in tip top shape. Careful not to leave an extension tool still attached to the new plug when returning the coil down the sleeve. Ask me how I know. I struggled for ages trying to put a coil back in place. It was only when I decided to leave that one alone for a while and move to the next that I could not find my extension when it dawned on me what had happened to it. DUH. lol. BTW I kept the same coils but replaced all the tubes. I too have the 99 model Carrera. Not all 996 models have the tubes. You will find a marked difference after the changes. Hold onto your hat lol.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, everyone. New coils on the way. I'd bought tubes ('99) and plugs, but not coils given the price, I'd read to only change cracked ones. But advice taken, and since...while I'm in there... Thanks!

You say "new coils on the way", then say "but not coils given the price" If I understand correctly that you have not ordered new coils, I have 6 coils that I took off my "99 C2 a year ago. These coils were new when my replacement engine was installed in 2004. So they were on the car for 11 years and 38,000 miles. I replaced them when I did my tubes and plugs as preventative measure. They were working and in good shape when I took them off the car. They are the "996" part #. I put the updated "997" part number back on mine. If you want these coils, I can sends them to you. You can use 1 as a replacement for the known bad one now and have the others as spares if others go bad. PM me if this helps.

I think he originally ordered the tubes and not the coils. Then after posting he ordered the coils and they are en-route.

I'll wait for keytohwy to respond. If he has his new ones coming, I'll offer these up in a new thread. Anyone reading this thread first and needs them, they are yours. Out of boxes, laid out on my work top. Dirty (didn't clean them) but thorough inspection reveals no cracks, rips, or any visible issues.

POST 10Original post

Maybe the drinks talking again, but why are you changing your plugs but not the coils? I mean sure, put them back on and go nuts, but what's the reason for changing them? Also these are old, and plastic, taking them off and on puts undo stress on them. Drive in the rain often?

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 13843751

wont swear to it but I think an inch. They are really cheap. I bought one inch and then an inch and an eight.

POST 12Original post

For the future if anyone is in need of just the coil tube I have a set (6) that are good. Leftovers from engine refresh and free to a good home. Hope the replacement of yours goes well.

I PM'd the OP if he wanted them, haven't heard back. But I believe he ordered new ones before he saw my offer. He has first shot. Hurdi contacted me already and they are promised to him if OP doesn't get back to me this weekend. Sorry.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all for the responses and the offer for coils. Sorry for the delayed response...got busy with holiday stuff. As one poster got it right, I had not ordered coils originally, but then ordered them based on feedback here. I tried to use local Porsche dealer parts dept, but they were so ridiculously priced, that I ordered online (Pelican). As I had previously understood it, the coils only needed to be replaced if cracked. But based on comments here, I sounds like they all needed to be replaced. Which is fine. Thanks again to everyone. This is a great community. keytohwy PS- Is there a way to get notified if someone send you a PM? Would be helpful.
