Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just snapped bolt head - vice grip not doing much - any other opinions - or should I just drill It out?

POST 2Original post

Soak overnight with PB Blaster. Maybe two steps, drill for an EZ out first and see if you can get it to budge. Then, if not, LH drill bit (reverse of normal). I really don't know if heating it would help, it might expand and really be stuck.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks - I fired up motor to get others so they break loose- I will get PB on it - I have about 1/2 inch to get vise grip on it - I will let it soak for a few days

POST 4Original post

Definitely PB or weasel pee (50% acetone 50% trans fluid) and heat, alternatively, over a few days. You have a gift in that "nub" that is sticking out so don't squander it. Be patient -- breaking the bolt loose is way better than drilling any day.

POST 5Original post

Independent tests confirm Kroil is the best penetrating fluid. Kano Labs. There are sets of replacement s/s studs available -inexpensive and easy upgrade.

POST 6Original post

i have all the penetrating oil available, Kroil, PB, the one that works best for me has always been ATF mix with Acetone 50/50. especially on the heavy equipment.

POST 7Original post

Do you have enough space to use a stud removal bit?

POST 9Original post

If you have a 1/2 inch of stud, these should work for you. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000CCXVZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483314089&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=bolt+extractor&dpPl=1&dpID=41QpdryvU1L &ref=plSrch

POST 10Original post

Did you undo/break the head with an air gun or with hand tools? Just curious as new headers are on my wish list but im nervous about the bolts

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 13851217

Yep, me too! I even have a set of 997S headers ready to go and I have put off the install given the apparent inevitability of some of the bolts breaking. For the OP, you might consider the Stromski kit. https://www.stomskiracing.com/produc...olt-repair-kit

There is a process that I remember reading that people have reported works well (mind you this is from memory and I haven't tried this): 1. Soak bolts well in WD-40 (or preferred penetrating fluid) overnight 2. Drive car to heat up bolts 3. Re-spray in WD-40 4. Remove bolts

POST 13Original post

Weld a nut on . Heat will break the bond so should unscrew nicely. If you drill it then use a jig otherwise things can get very ugly

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 13851332

Don't weld. Bolts will harden and break under the nut. I made this mistake, and had to bought hard metal drillbit to drill the bolts.

$342.00 to remove one broken bolt seems a bit extreme.

POST 16Original post

I have used this type of stud extractor successfully: I have one of these as well, but the way the torque is applied (off-center from the stud you're removing) makes me worry that I might inadvertently twist off the remaining stud...

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

3/8 impact - then tried 1/2 inch on a cold motor - after that - I ran engine unit it reached 180 water temp - all others broke loose with 3/8 impact after that - I think I will try ARP bolts for the headers - they will not break

I think heating up the bolts (with the car) is the key. Had a look at the header bolts the other day they look small and easy to break eeeep. Here in Melbourne there are mobile services that will come out and extract broken bolts so im sure there would be the same service available in the US! Would surly cost less than the kit (maybe in this scenario with only one bolt at least).
