I have seen those but thought I got lucky with the Volvo ones, until I checked the diagram.

In an interesting twist to this, I contacted Cargraphic (the x-pipe manufacturer) and they advised that the cats were installed the wrong way around!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
Recently installed a 200 CEL x-pipe and the o2 sensor for bank 1 is too short to fit back into the holder (i.e. its connected and working however the holder in the engine bay can't be used as the wire is too short.
I've looked for cable extensions with no luck, has anyone tried an o2 sensor with a longer wire? I think the original is 545mm. Saw a Bosch one for a Volvo with the same plug?
Car is a 2004 - Aus delivered RoW car so only a pre-cat o2 sensor no post cat.
Part number of the current genuine sensor (made by Bosch) is: 996 606 168 01
Thanks!
It appears I may have answered my own question, according to the Bosch website an o2 sensor from a Volvo S80 will work and comes with a cable that's +400mm longer! - Winning

an any wiring diagram experts confirm the wiring of the sensor is the same on a Volvo XC90? They look the same to me. Diagrams are as follows:
996:
Volvo XC90:
While the heater pins don't have polarity, the O2 sensor pins (3&4) do. Cannot tell if the volvo sensor uses the same polarity.
Have you tried hooking it up? You can monitor the O2 voltage reading in real-time and see if the pre-cat reading swings.
Thanks Ahsai, I actually haven't bought them yet and i'm also concerned about plugging in things with the incorrect polarity etc. into my DME and damaging it :s
You may want to check out the
universal
fit with 2 feet wires.
I've never tried it but it looks like you cut off the stock sensor plug (sensor side) and use the smart connector to connect to the new sensor.
Theres a video of instructions.
I have seen those but thought I got lucky with the Volvo ones, until I checked the diagram. Was hoping not to have to cut and splice and just find a direct replacement.
Guess i'll keep looking, there is one other sensor that is 900mm in length which is a bit long but ill check out the wiring for it. Its from yet another Volvo... An S80.
Lucky because I was about to buy them today, crafty Sweeds changing the pins...
Are we fairly sure the about wont work because of the pin swap?
They look the same to me.... Pin 1= heater ground, pin 2= heater power, pin 3= sensor ground, pin 4 = sensor signal......Remember the diagram does not show that ACTUAL "pin order" of the connector, but rather "pin number" on the connector. It is drawn that way for ease of drawing/following paths..The "actual" Pin order will be 1-2-3-4... Put the old and new side by side and compare "color of the sensor wires" to connector pin order...
Porschetech3, just to clarify is there any issue regarding pin 1 and pin 2 in the fact that on the 996 pin 1 goes into the box thing while on the volvo pin 1 comes out of the box thing? - Sorry I dont know the names of the components! Or is it the slash through the box thing that's important?
To throw a bit more confusion in the ring, here is the diagram from an S80 which looks like its closer to the 996 except now 3-4 are the other way around.
You should not be concerned with the wiring on the DME side of the connector. Different manufactures use these wires in different ways. Pins 1-2-3 from the left and right sensors can be connected together or not, can switch on and off the heater, and can have circuitry to measure Ohms of heater circuit for diagnosis. Porsche does measure heater circuit for self-diagnosis.Pin 4 is sensor signal and will always be separated all the way to DME for left and right. You should only be concerned with the wires from the o2sensor to connector. On Bosch 4 wire sensors the colors are pin 1 white, pin 2 white, pin 3 grey, pin 4 black. On the Porsche connector Pin 1= heater ground, pin 2= heater power, pin 3= sensor ground, pin 4= sensor signal.
Thanks Porschetech3, I might try the Volvo XC90 wires as they are the length I need as well, the S80 ones are 900mm+ which is a bit too long.
Will my PIWIS be able to determine if the heating of the sensor is working?
Okay sorry to harp on about this but my current O2 sensors have - Black - Grey - White - White and the Volvo S80 wires are the same, so all things considered the white wires are (i'm assuming are the same and don't have a polarity?)
Here is a used one:
In an interesting twist to this, I contacted Cargraphic (the x-pipe manufacturer) and they advised that the cats were installed the wrong way around! I.e. they needed to be rotated - the flow was correct as marked by arrows on them.
I had seen an image of them installed with the lambda sensors facing the rear of the car - that's incorrect they should face the front of the car. Have to now undo the springs and rotate them. That will actually give me some more slack so I actually don't need longer cables I guess.
