Hey all,
Anyone with a Dension Gateway 500 use a bluetooth to ipod adapter to stream bluetooth music from you phone to the Dension?
Wonder if it would work if no one has tried?
I have the infamous 2004 MOST system. Was going to get an isimple wired FM unit but I remembered seeing a bluetooth adapter for an ipod Bose dock I had started wonder if it works...
Adapter example:
I have no affiliation with this brand/image below just wanted to use it as an example
Have a few bluetooth setups with my Bose and Yamaha gear and it sounds great.
The newer Dension BT unit has it built in but from my research it only works with the PCM2.
Don't get me wrong maybe ill just suck it up and drive with the window down to hear the engine but unlike over in the US its getting cold here
I use a Dension 500 and a bluetooth adapter.
The one I use is the
Himbox
Himbox
routed to a Female Stereo to RCA which plugs into the Dension.
Hassle free for the past 10 months.
The one downside - I'm actually now thinking about ripping out the entire sound system for weight. Would've rather spent that $500 elsewhere.
Apologies for the truly terrible photos, but is anyone able to tell what type of fiber connector is being used here? This is for the CDC in an '03 996 with Bose audio and a CDR230.
I picked up a used Dension Gateway 500 Lite and it didn't come with any cables.
To be honest the ipod functionality is dated, just use the AUX cable. The only advantage to it is I think you can change tracks with the head unit dial.
Even so its limited as there is no track data.
If you had a PCM2 then you could use the latest dension unit with Bluetooth streaming and track info im in the same boat with the CDR-23.
Dension with aux to Bluetooth is the best option IMO
I need the Dension AUX box, then, right? I have an iPhone 7 so I need to use Apple's stupid lightning-to-aux adapter in order to get a standard 3.5mm jack.. sigh.
Yes I think you need the box or there is nothing to plug the aux cable into. Also from what I have read you need the CD changer option turned on by the dealership or a diag cable
I have a factory CD changer already so I should be good there.
Now I just need to figure out where to buy the Dension stuff. There's a smattering of it on eBay, but apart from dension.com no one seems to stock much of anything.
I found myself not being able to spend that much money and still be with the OEM unit, I went and got a Alpine BT149 head unit, RCA to MOST adapter, and CAI harness kit to install in my 04 996 C2 with MOST Hi Fi system using the OEM amp and speakers, no cutting of harness required, took about 2 hours to install and best part now I can use Pandora, and phone call's. these are the links for the parts. the adapter states it is for the 05-08 P-car, but I know it works on the 03 and 04 cars. system sounds great now. I run this same Alpine HU in my truck and Harley. I find only one con with this set-up, you won't have Fader, I never use it.

Alpine BT149, I have found these units for nice price on Amazon.

Bringing this back up, I think this is the list of what I need to connect my Gateway 500 Lite. Can anyone sanity-check this? I've got an email in to Dension but no reply yet. Here's what I think that I need:
Lightning cradle
or
Lightning adapter for Gateway
Optical connection kit
Tyco-to-Yazaki converter kit
Power cable
This is for an '03 911 with a CDR23 and factory CD changer. I have an iPhone 7. Thanks!
Doesn't your Dension come with everything in your list apart from the cradle?
Take a look at what accessories they supply for brand new units and go from there.
You can work around the Tyco-to-Yazaki converter kit by using a most extension cable that is a female that you plug the car cable into.
Just an update on this actually because I forgot that I started this thread I bought a dension gateway 500 + bta1500, yet to install it.
@dan_189, let us know whether you'd need to code CD changer first.
I didn't have to because my car came with a changer which I took out.
Install was really easy, tapping into the changer's power, ran the cable into the cabin and done. Make sure that you set the switches correctly, I didn't and the whole system was resetting itself every 5 minutes.
Hey 318 Yep I have to code it to be on, I've tried to connect it but got nothing.
I've started a new thread as the dealership here isn't too sure how to turn it on. From what I've read I might have to connect it and then let the PIWIS detetect it as a CD changer and enable it.
Just a quick update on this, I too had the dip switches set incorrectly. I had them set for using the dension with a CDC. Set them correctly and the radio started working again with the dension in the loop.
Still have to get the CDC enabled tomorrow at the dealership though.
Ok, now for a
really
silly question. If you have a Dension unit and you're using an iPod/iPhone with a Lightning cable, can you control the music from the iPod/iPhone itself or do you
have
to use the radio controls? If you have to use the radio controls, I might pick up their Aux Port box as well.
@dan_189, so what's the news - success?
@numbah9, I've only got the old iPod/iPhone connector so no idea as I don't have an older iPhone. I'm using AUX and with plugged-in USB stick I controlled the music through my radio.
I'm no Dension expert, however the AUX box does more that just allow you to plug in the AUX cables.
The AUX box has a switch that allows you to put the Dension into "service mode" if you get errors when plugging in a PIWIS computer. Which means without it your unit wont turn on.
Heading to the dealership this afternoon so they can replace the clutch master cylinder and enable my CDC.
I'm also intending to use the BTA1500 as well.
Will know in a few days!!
Actually 318, can you please post a pic of where you mounted your Dension? I'm thinking about mounting it in the frunk and running an 8 pin extension cable into the cabin for the BTA1500.
I know I'll take crap for this - and almost didn't post it - BUT:
If the only thing you want is Bluetooth integration, buy the best add-on bluetooth interface you can find for your phone and use a powered, wired (in-line) FM modulator. No, it's not going to be ANYWHERE near as good audio quality as a $3K+ ground-up rebuild - but if you're satisfied with the sound quality, spend $50 or $100 and use the audio features built into your smartphone (Pandora, iTunes, Prime Music, etc. etc. etc.).
Until a few years ago, I couldn't live without satellite radio in all of our cars, but at this point unlimited 4G plus streaming apps takes care of everything in the "fun" cars. I keep SiriusXM in the Jeep since we tend to wind up in places with no cell service in that vehicle...
A GOOD inline modulator like this one, PLUS your aftermarket bluetooth gadget of choice, isn't going to sound noticeably worse than any other solution that involves the factory head unit, amp, speakers, etc. Note that this is in no way the same as using a wireless FM transmitter/modulator that will crap out every time you drive under power lines or near any significant RF source. The wired version below is a higher-end ghetto solution.
Thanks Schn3ll, I had considered a wired FM modulator but I liked the integration of the Dension, wasn't able to find any info on what the BTA1500 is like so i've bought one and so ill find out soon enough!
If its not that great ill get a bluetooth to AUX unit and use that straight into the Dension AUX.
I bought my Dension for a couple of hundred $ hence the most economical way to do this for me.
AUX connector inside the car
Dension mounted in the CD changer space with the AUX-cable box mounted on the strut-brace with cable ties. I haven't investigated fully how to run and hide the cable through the bulkhead
Close up. It is a real Dension, the last three letters were taken off by the black electrical tape I used to hold it in place. Again, not professional install but good enough for me.
Thanks 318, that's the same kind of set up ill be using although I'll be using the bta1500 so hopefully it's good enough to be mounted in the frunk and Pickup my phone in the cabin. If not ill run the cable in.
As for the wiring there are two grommets you can go though the first - frunk into bulkhead area and then another into the cabin (looks like you found that one though).
I started a thread here that shows the frunk to bulkhead area gromet:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/998969-part-number-please-bulkhead-rubber-grommet.html
Hah, I'll take a look behind the whole brake reservoir setup. I thought I had looked everywhere, obviously not thorough enough! Need to wash the car as it was either too cold or wet or both at the moment :-(
Guessing your 996 is a C4 or C4S from the look of the frunk?
I'm also going to poke my ctek charger cables through that grommet so I don't have to remove the battery cover to charge it as mentioned in that thread.
Any more ideas about whether you have to control a lightning-connected iPhone through the head unit, or if you can control it through the iPhone itself?
@numbah, for me, it's not an issue as I just put on Spotify's "Latest Hits" tracks and leave it at that. I will also get too busy driving to want to change songs. Volume obviously is controllable from your head-unit. I don't utilise iPod as I only use Spotify, as per the above.
Well, it actually
does
work now. I've successfully removed the factory CD changer (mine is a CDC4) and replaced it with the Dension Gateway 500 Lite.
The instructions are a little bit lacking. When it comes to programming the unit, I formatted a USB drive and copied the Porsche-specific config file onto it. When formatting it as a FAT16 filesystem (the default), the Dension only works sometimes. When formatting it as a FAT32 filesystem, it works all the time.
The other thing is that the config file seemingly must be on the USB drive at all times. If it's not on the drive, or if the drive is removed, the Dension won't work. I'll contact Dension support and see if that's expected behavior, because that seems strange to me.
Doesn't sound right (excuse the pun!) that you need to keep the usb in it to work. Although if that's the only source of music then it would make sense. Do you have the AUX box because I think that also control on and off.
Okay so an update on this. used my PIWIS II to enable the CD changer and got the AUX working!
Although I plugged in the BTA1500 Bluetooth unit but I can't get that to work.
Has anyone used the BTA1500 with a CDR23?
Yeah it doesn't sound right to me either, I guess I'll put in a call to them and see what they say.
I do have the AUX box as well, I don't really plan on using it but it was cheap enough that I just threw it in when I ordered the other stuff.
I would have thought you needed the AUX box attached as it has the status light on it. That's just a guess though, maybe you don't need it.
I've actually gone back to the original idea that started this thread and that's a Bluetooth to 30pin ipod connector. No one seems to have tried it so ill buy one and give it a shot. The BTA1500 seems to only be for PCM units and not a CDR23
I didn't see anything like that in the documentation, but then, the documentation is pretty ordinary. Perhaps Malcolm Turnbull wrote it
That's an interesting one for sure. Let us know how it goes! I was a little hesitant that the BTA1500 would work on a CDR23, as when you browse by Make/Model on Dension's site they
only
show the Gateway 500 & 500 Lite when you choose the CDR23.
Haha good old Malcolm!
I contacted dension support and they got back to me really quickly and said it's only for the PCM units with phone support... Ugh
So I now have a few options I guess, Bluetooth to 30 pin ipod cable (not overly hopeful on that) or Bluetooth to AUX.
Okay so just keeping this alive, I've been able to use the AUX in, iPod and USB but I can't select between them on my CDR-23?
When the iPod is plugged in it takes over the whole headunit and I cant just control the ipod only??
I got an answer from Dension and Eric (Bumper plugs) that the BTA1500 does not work and even if it did its only mono/single channel.
This has been painful
Not sure if its my Dension or this is the behaviour on the CDR-23 because its so basic.
Guys, quick update on this after tirelessly searching for a wireless solution I found one that works!
Can confirm that the Viseoo Bovee WMA1000 works for Bluetooth audio to the Dension Gateway 500 via the 30 pin ipod cable! Yay!
Doesn't allow for the CDR23 to control changing the track but that's fine you can do it on the phone anyway! I never tried the cheaper Bluetooth 30 pin dongles - maybe I should have as they were almost $120 less anyway it works im happy 😊
Hey guys, quick update on this I bought a cheaper $25 30 pin Bluetooth adapter. I made sure it was compatible with a Bose sounddock series 1 so it was powered (cheaper units aren't and don't work with a series 1 dock) however no bueno.
Conclusively only the bovee WMA1000 works cheaper units don't.
Another quick follow up: same setup with a Dension 500 on CD-R-23 with a bovee. At least with an iPhone, it does support switching tracks via the radio controls. Works with Spotify and Apple Music apps (only ones I've tested).
