Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Spoke with seller of '99 911. Claims "local European import shop diagnosed it. Did compression test and put a camera down into cylinder walls to look for damage and found nothing other than oil and coolant mixing. Idles, runs, and drives no issue otherwise." Thoughts? Is this a bigger problem?

POST 2Original post

Just oil and coolant mixing. Just.............. Lots of potential issues, cracked heads, AOS failure, gunk in the coolant. Assume the worst, don't pay more than roller money and have a big reserve of cash for rebuild and fingers crossed for something easy. FYI head gaskets almost never fail on these cars, lots of other things, oh hell yes.

POST 3Original post

my 2 cents: keep looking and pass on this potential money pit

POST 4Original post

Head gaskets never fail on these cars , it's a bigger issue . Cracked head or worse . Run don't walk away

POST 6Original post

There are better choices out there, keep looking .

POST 7Original post

My thought is you have a very large repair bill in your future. But if you can get the car for $5,000 go for it.

POST 8Original post

Since it is a 99, I would assume cracked head, and base the sale price on an engine rebuild or replacement. Since the sellers are saying there is nothing wrong with it, they are probably asking near full price (15k, or something like that). I would walk away.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

He's asking 10k. Claims compression test and camera work show no other issues. Tried to get him down on the price. And the search continues...

POST 10Original post

The fact that the "local European import shop" doesn't know that head gasket failure isn't really a "thing" for M96-powered cars would make me disinclined to use that shop for your water-cooled Porsche needs once you DO acquire a 996...

^^This^^ He's either clueless, or he's a liar looking to unload a bum engine on a unsuspecting buyer. Neither scenario bodes well for the shop...

POST 13Original post

Id be interested in talking to that owner if you dont mind sharing the contact info.

POST 15Original post

Porous Engine block. Not savable. Will cost you 10-13K for new Used engine installed. So subtract that from the value.

"PRICE IS FIRM DO NOT CONTACT ME TO OFFER ME ANYTHING BESIDES WHAT I'M ASKING." Sounds like the seller has already had a few people tell him what his car is worth as a roller. Get his email, wait until February, offer him $5k ... at that price, in October in PA, I'd be surprised if that car is going anywhere

Yup...SCUMBAG looking to unload a dying/dead engine on an uninformed buyer...I wish there was a way to flag those types of ads...could save someone lots of heartache and cash... Nice Aerokit though...I'd pay 5k for it
