Changed the sun-roof weather strip/gasket; no more water infiltration.
Leading evidence: 'Replace sun-roof weather strip/gasket; no more water infiltration' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair ; typical german engineering)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After searching most of the water infiltration posts, a few points are still unclear. Do the (4) front drains in the battery compartment have actual tubes that go from the holes where the "Grommet" attaches, beside the battery both sides, to the exit holes behind the fender liners in wheel-well; I have no drain tubes in my car, only the down grommets with the tapered end, which acts like a valve/dirt trap. Also there are 2 exit holes on drivers side and 1 exit on passenger side. How do these all connect, and / or are the tubes to the outside needed or will water drain there anyway. The Bentley manual shows tubes, so I'm wondering what happened to them. Most of my water is in the back left foot-well, with a fair amount in front foot-well under fuse panel. The Sunroof drains are also not clear to me but I will keep looking. I know this is a boring topic but a huge number of people are having the same problems. ( a silly design flaw to say the least)
Thanks to all who know, and have interest.
The water up front is from the front drains. The water in the rear is the sunroof drains.
All the upfront drains have tubes that connect. Sort of.
They are probably impossible to replace if they are gone, but I bet they are still there if you look.
For the two on the drivers side, one is just a flap to the wheel well. The other connects to the grommet under the battery. Remove the battery and tray and the front tire. Take a piece of wire and thread it through. I bet it comes out under the battery. If not remove the grommet from under the battery and I bet you will be able to see the wire. Pull it up and I bet the tube is there and you can put the grommet back on, or you can get one of the upgraded grommets. For the passenger side you can do the same thing for one of them. The other drains under the car. You really can't see the end of the tube, but I bet if you pull the grommet you will see the tube.
There is a TSB on this. It sounds like the TSB was done on your car - a good thing. The TSB involves removing the drain tubes entirely and putting in only the down grommets. Implementing the TSB is intended to stop the flooding of the interior of the car via the Frunk.

Thanks to you for those responses; I am able to, and have removed the grommets, and viewed with an inspection camera,no tubes visible; also had battery & tray out as well. How does the water drain after the "TSB" mentioned is implemented? Does it go straight down somehow, or to those drain holes at the wheel-wells? The only down drain I found awhile ago was the overflow from the gas filler>
I had water in the drivers footwell when I got the car. The drains were pushed through but still connected to the hoses. I pulled them all back through and ordered the parts for the TSB. 2 years later the drains still in place and car is dry as a bone. Never got around to replacing the grommets.
Does TSB stand for technical service bulletin? or some kind of repair? and, What is a Frunk? :-)
I have a small plastic window on passenger side covering a vin # I believe; it's in the cowl over the interior air filter. All sorts of new language and mechanical oddities with these vehicles. Ownership is not for the faint of heart, nor weak of funds!!!
Join renntech. Donate $25. The best money you will ever spend. You will have access to all the TSB's (technical service bulletins). If you have the clear window then they did the update and removed the hoses. If you still have water in the front I did read a post about a leak in a seam in the fire wall. Maybe that's the answer
Yes,
RennTech has all of the Technical Service Bulletins for many Porsches on it.
They have very detailed step-by-step instructions on how to fix problems Porsche has identified. 238 TSBs for the 996!

After having all sunroof drains cleared at an Indie garage, still had water coming in at drivers side front.
Pulled off the frame on the fuse panel to the left of clutch, and then peeled back the carpet arround that. The clear plastic drain tube was disconnected from the front sunroof drain; once hooked up, poured some water near the drain at the left of the sunroof and it flowed out on the ground as it should. That seems to have been the problem all along. I'll know more after a good hard rain.
Nice. Sounds like you fixed it. Leaks can be really difficult to track down. I have a cab and in very heavy downpours I get drops of water coming in at the drivers corner up near where the top meets the windshield. I think I may have a pinprick hole in the canvas top but have no idea how to find it.
KK is back in full force!
On occasion I take my car up to the Mountains where it actually rains and I don't have a garage.
Expecting the car to melt when the rain hits it but it hasn't happened yet.
On a final note, after all this hastle and some worry about water drains, I personally don't believe that the drains in the frunk (4), allow water to get in the cabin unless it passes thru wiring harness' etc. If these areas have good rubber connectors or calking, it shouldn't happen; not to say that attention shouldn't be paid to the above front drain maintenance. Most, if not all cabin infiltration comes from the (4) sunroof drains; also the Bentley manual is not clear and actually not correct as to the front sunroof drains. That said, these drains are the dumbest thing I have seen in a long time, along with many other engineering flaws these cars have. One wouldn't expect a car at this price to be built so cheaply. "The thrill is gone".
So, finally water issues resolved. Changed the sun-roof weather strip/gasket; no more water infiltration. Their are two gaskets; one that goes around the glass, and another at the back of the sunroof for the tilt up setting. The latter was pushed way back towards the rear, Brought back into position and glued;and the main gasket was tired and flattened, and leaking. Main gasket about $115. + 1 hr. labour.
To re-cap. their are a few drains in the frunk in the channel that holds the battery and brake resevoir.(5) make sure these are not plugged with leaves and crap.
The snroof has (4) drains, 2 front, left and right; 2 rear, left and right. They empty near the rear of the wheels front and back, left and right side. you can test with sunroof fully open and gently pouring a little water in the trough which surrounds the the glass, left, right and front. You should see water flowing out at wheels. There are joints along these drains that can come apart like mine did just behind the fuse panel in back of the clutch pedal on left-hand drive model. ( a pain to get at and repair; typical German engineering).
: Now on to the next issue, there are many, and never ending. This is my last Porsche 996!
Have a great day.
