if oil comes out and you can turn the engine over keep checking...the aos might be the source ,though doubtful

There's guys that replace $4k worth of parts/maintenance every year on their car to have it still fail.

My best advice is if you elect to replace the engine with your trusted Porsche tech seek out a used engine from a similar MY car and install this engine.

I paid only 8k for this car and see that even a used motor will run me about 6k minimum.

If the engine can't be run and can't even be cranked with a jury rigged battery to run at least a compression test -- there is always the leak down test then -- it would nice if the company selling the engine offered an exchange if the engine proved to be bad out of the box, err crate.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello guys, i bought an 02 996 abotu 2 years ago and has been running fine until today. I was driving and suddenly huge amounts of smoke was coming from the rear of the car it turned off and i coasted to the shoulder. The car would not crank at all as if the motor was seized and under the car was a puddle of a brownish sludge but there is no hole in the block , and the coolant res and tank was completely empty and gooey. I paid only 8k for this car and see that even a used motor will run me about 6k minimum. The shop that its at wants $1500 to drop the motor and take it apart , then add parts and labor if it needs a rebuild. So my thoughts are what alternatives do i have? Will a 01 2.7L boxster engine fit ? I know it wont be the same experience but i just want to get my car back on the road while spending the last possible $ as i can get that motor now for 1k.
I want to thank everyone who will respond in advanced.
Sorry to hear!
Is it a 3.4 or 3.6? Sounds like an intermix issue where the coolant mixes with oil from hearing about the sludge and the coolant missing. I'm no mechanic though.
Think there have been boxster people who have swapped to Carrera engines so it might be a possibility. I'd imagine you'd have more room in the Carrera engine bay.
You found a 2.7 Boxster motor for $1k? Wow! I will leave it for others to answer as to whether or not you can do the swap, but that is a smokin' deal! (no pun intended).
For $1k, buy that motor if it is good! You can EASILY sell it for more than that.
I'm just curious, how many miles are on your car? Yes the 2.7l engine will physically fit in the car but it will not be a "plug and play" situation there will be wiring harness and control units issues to deal with. If you can get a replacement engine for 1K it is worth the extra effort.
It could be the current engine is salvageable without having to go through a full rebuild. But it will cost money to find out.
Generally in these cases you are funding an open expedition to ascertain the engine's condition and the news might be bad. Not many owners have the stomach for this. Not sure I would either in similar circumstances.
My best advice is if you elect to replace the engine with your trusted Porsche tech seek out a used engine from a similar MY car and install this engine. It is plug and play and you can be back on the road in practically no time.
The used engine ideally should be in a car in which even if the car can't be driven at least the engine can be run and some idea of its condition obtained.
If the engine can't be run and can't even be cranked with a jury rigged battery to run at least a compression test -- there is always the leak down test then -- it would nice if the company selling the engine offered an exchange if the engine proved to be bad out of the box, err crate.
The 2.7l Boxster engine will fit. Some things have to be modified to accomodate the engine, though. The intake manifold has to be turned 180 degs. The exhaust manifolds may have to be changed. The engine may not sit at the right height and this has to be dealt with. In going the other way there are shims or spacers that lower the 996 engine in the Boxster. Not sure what is available going the other way.
Pelican Parts web site has a technical section in which engine swaps are covered. I'm not sure the Boxster 2.7l to 996 3.4l/3.6l is covered but you can read up what is necessary to move a 996 engine to a Boxster that originally came with a 2.7l engine and work out what you are up against.
Sorry to hear that. Since you got the car for only $8k, I think selling it as a roller for $5k makes sense. $3k cost in two years is not bad at all. Any other ways to restore it to the same 3.6 and make it worth keeping in the long run will cost a lot more than $8k.

RND engines are around $16k I think.
I don't know...maybe it's too much of a gamble but $1500 to drop the engine and see what is wrong is not so bad. What if it is just a faulty AOS that hydrolocked the engine, or intermix which can be repaired? I would spend $1500 to find out what happened and see if it is something repairable before heading off to a full blown replacement engine. But it is your car and your choice.
Either way you came out ahead. There's guys that replace $4k worth of parts/maintenance every year on their car to have it still fail.
I still can't get over how you were able to get a 996.2 car for only $8k and still drive it 2 years...wow
BTW, for a guy that spent only $8k on a running 996.2 to begin with, I can't see him putting any kind of big dollars into it.
It's interesting you can get a used Boxster engine for $1k. I'm looking at my m96 3.6L engine rebuild parts list. Just the genuine gaskets and bolts are $1,200
I only bought the car because i could not pass up the deal , and right before the engine went i spent 5k on a complete brake system and heating/cooling as well at Rocs auto in belleville, i do not want to make the car a money pit as its obsurd to me to invest any more MAJOR bucks into it .
Here is the car , i added the gt2 bumper , turbo wheels, and sharkwerks exhaust.
This is not to sound negative towards the OP but for someone that only spent $8k on a 996, I doubt he's gonna wanna spend $16k(big dollars) on a motor per your reco. That's what I was getting at.
OP, that looks like a very nice example. Knowing more now, I agree it would be good to diagnose it so you know if it's repairable or not. $1.5k is a little steep though.
Lol, reading comprehension owns me. That's what I get for scanning these posts rapidly in between working.
I guess the $16k RND link was so overwhelming by the sheer $ that I overlooked everything else.
Cant find any holes or cracks in the blocks, which makes me believe that the motor just hydrolocked and siezed. I am going to pull the sparkplugs , drain the oil , and crank by hand and see what happens.
A 3-liter 6-cylinder engine can hydrolock on as little as 50ml of liquid; the fact that you had a sizeable puddle under the car makes it less likely that you're going to slap on a new AOS and 6 new plugs and be on your way.
I REALLY hope you're right...hope for the best, but prepare yourself for the worst. BTW, you can pick up a USB borescope on Amazon for less than $20 if you have a laptop you can use it with - so you could start to get an idea of what's going on via the plug holes...
Not to dig the hole deeper than it already is: you said you had heating/cooling done by Rocs Auto. What did they do?
And bravo for you for doing some investigative work before giving up! Please post up what you find. We all learn something when someone gets in there to find out what went wrong.
As a next step, put the car up on a lift and have an experienced tech "scope" each cylinder. Doing so might provide info. for some educated guesses on re-build prospects.
Swapping to a Boxster engine would probably render the car unsellable.

like you said ...pull the plugs and see what comes out ...if it is coolant ....stop....the car should be sold. if oil comes out and you can turn the engine over keep checking...the aos might be the source ,though doubtful
Don't just replace the engine.. Have it diagnosed by an M96 specialist... It may not be a total loss, and could be repairable. We perform miracles daily.
