Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Works great, but every once in a while doesn't function and have to use key in door.

Suggestion
It may be time to get the new version - more functions, such as close top while engine is off and use the key remote to put top down before getting in.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I use one on my 997. I really like it. The beeps when locking and unlocking are really short and very quiet, just the way I like them. I hate it when a car locks and tells the world at full volume. All the other features are very nice but pricey to be sure. I bought a second hand one, saved a bundle. Install was relatively easy as well. Took me about 1/2 hour going slow.
I also use one in my 997. It's a great mod and it makes the top operate the way that it should from the factory. The additional features that it offers are nice too.
I just put one in and like it so far. The function from the rmote is a bit wonky (3 well timed presses of the button), but otherwise its pretty slick.
I had a remotetop module that I was using, but had some amazon gift certificates so I picked up the smarttop to get 1 touch operation from the dash and add the ability to move the top in motion.
Im going to list my remotetop in the classifieds soon for much less than a new smarttop if you are more interested in operation with the remote. The remote operation with that is much easier (just press and hold for up or down) Shoot me a PM if interested.
I've had one on my 2001 cab for ~5 yrs. Works great, but every once in a while doesn't function and have to use key in door. Overall, very pleased with it. It may be time to get the new version - more functions, such as close top while engine is off and use the key remote to put top down before getting in.
There is an easy mod to allow MK I cab tops to Open/close while in motion (Just involves cutting the speed sensor wire). To me that is the most important function as I have been stuck in slow-moving traffic when there was a sudden cloud burst. The rest of the functions that the Smartop provides aren't worth $400 to me.
^ There is a relay mod on the 986 that consists of bending one of the relay pins (and MAYBE soldering a single jumper wire in the relay - can't remember) that allowed operation of the top while the car is in motion without the e-brake set.
I think this is the "pin 18 relay mod" - I'm about 80% sure that bending the relay pin out of the way overrides the speed sensor; the jumper wire takes care of the e-brake issue.
I went this route because I wasn't willing to spend the $$ on the aftermarket solution...
The SmartTop is expensive, no doubt. That being said, there are some features that I really like aside from the ability to operate the top while moving. My favorites include:
- One touch operation to raise or lower the top, with no need to hold the button
- One touch on the front window switch lowers both the front and rear windows
- Automatic unlocking of the doors when the key is removed from the ignition
- Ability to lower the top and lower the windows using the key fob
Yep. That's what I did. Easy and free. I do wish I had one-touch operation, but for the price, this mod is great.
Cut the grey/pink wire to the cab top control module.

Getting some good opinions here, thanks! I am loath to cut wires or otherwise play with relays as I want to keep everything stock so no issues can be blamed on me, lol. I agree that many of the supported functions should have been factory and many are now. It seems that the SMARTop module is well thought out and does have the USB port for easy updating (for what I son't know.). Just need to find the $ to purchase. Need to start selling the leftover pieces from my previous p-cars. Sigh.
+1 for the SMARTtop. Have it on my 2002, I couldn't imagine going back to holding down the button and only opening/closing when stopped. Just give the button a quick press when pulling into a parking lot, almost home, etc. and continue driving. The added rear window functionality is a bonus.
It is a nice thing to have but at $440.00 (Amazon) for a 997 I think it is WAY overpriced. Keep an eye out in the forums and on eBay- you never know when one will turn up. I got one on eBay last winter for half the cost of a new one.
I need to start selling off all my left over Boxster stuff too!
