Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm suspicious that since the old owner's shop installed HDs intead of SPs with lowering springs, they've blown out.

I do have somewhat "floaty" behavior at high speeds, but I just changed tires and I actually think a large degree of that is some combination of tread squirm and soft sidewalls on my new tires (Continental ExtremeContact DW).

I'd check the suspension carefully, it doesn't sound right.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

New member here, bought my first 996 last fall and am still learning about it.
Previous owner installed Eibach Pro-kit springs and Bilstein HD shocks.
When I jack my car up so the wheels are at full droop, I can pick up the front wheels by hand about 1" without too much effort. In other words I can compress the spring and shock an inch by lifting moderately, maybe exerting 50-75 lbs.
I'm wondering if this is normal. I'm suspicious that since the old owner's shop installed HDs intead of SPs with lowering springs, they've blown out. On other cars I've had (Audis), there's no way I'd be able to pick the wheel up like that. The shocks would be extremely stiff and would require full body weight to compress, not something you could just lift up on by hand. But perhaps with the much lighter front end the damper characteristics of the Porsche are just very different from what I'm used to.
Thanks for all the great content here! Hopefully I'll be able to be a contributor eventually instead of just a leech
It has more to do with the springs than shocks. You have Eibach Prokit which is on the soft side and also progressive in the rear.
Unless you see oil leaking on the outside or experience any floaty behavior, I don't think you should worry.
The Bilstein HD are well suited for the Pro kit btw. The Sports are only needed for more moderate lowering.
I'm new to porsches so don't know about the specifics of their shocks.
But it seems strange that you can lift the wheel an inch with just 50-75 lbs
of force. I doubt your spring rate can be as low as 50-75lbs/inch.
More likely that the spring is fully extended at full droop when you
jack up the car so it is not bearing any weight.
That said. Your Bilsteins are high pressure gas shocks and shouldn't
be compressible with so little weight. If you jacked up only one side
of the car, your sway bars should be helping you lift that wheel.
If your entire car is up in the air, the sway bar should resist your
lifting up the wheel by hand.
I'd check the suspension carefully, it doesn't sound right.
Ah, good call on the swaybar helping with only one side up. With both front wheels in the air it's considerably harder to lift a wheel.
I do have somewhat "floaty" behavior at high speeds, but I just changed tires and I actually think a large degree of that is some combination of tread squirm and soft sidewalls on my new tires (Continental ExtremeContact DW). Did not have floaty feeling on old tires, so that has to be the cause. Not super thrilled with those tires. The car came with mismatched tires though, that were quite old, so I felt the need to replace. Hoping that as the Contis wear down a little, they get better. Otherwise, hoping they wear out fast so I can get something else
