Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Haven't posted any pics since I bought it but the other day the sun was out and the top was down and the car looked clean...so here it is.

No spacers on the wheels...which I bought from Wheel Dynamics and they gave me a good price on the old chrome ones...I gave it a non-dealer service at the indie lot I bought it from (oil change, tiptronic fluid and seals change).

The real question is how many dealership oil changes have you gotten so far with the new ride?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Haven't posted any pics since I bought it but the other day the sun was out and the top was down and the car looked clean...so here it is. For 16 years one owner and now me. MY 2000 46k miles, extensive service history, blah blah blah. I wasn't looking for a cab but every time I drove it I liked it more. And now I like it even more than when I bought it. It came with some ugly chrome twist-like wheels and I quickly dumped those for these. New Pilot Sports all around and now I just add gas and drive it. I have to find excuses to use the GTI now and then.
Oh yes...I like the headlights.
She's a beauty John! Super clean - the paint looks amazing... No surprise you like it so much. I think the wheels are much nicer than "chrome twisties"... The two big questions in my mind are:
1) Which watch do you wear while driving her? and.....
2) Do you change the oil yourself?
Great looking car John! Only problem is that it only registers 175 mph. Silly Mk1 Cab, mine will do 200 mph! bwahahahahahaha!
Anyway, where did you find the Carrera II wheels? Let me guess... you went to the Porsche dealership, smiled at the baristas, and had a few drinks while the parts manager went to the warehouse to find the last remaining ones in inventory. Am I right?
Looks good! How long have you had it? And no matter what anyone says, convertibles are just plain fun to drive when the weather is nice.
I also find myself driving my 996 more often than the much newer hot hatch.
Thanks all for the nice comments. I bought the car in January. The color is just plain black. No spacers on the wheels...which I bought from Wheel Dynamics and they gave me a good price on the old chrome ones...I gave it a non-dealer service at the indie lot I bought it from (oil change, tiptronic fluid and seals change).
I was looking for an early duel row IMS bearing model with mechanical controls on the frunk and engine bay latches, the real spare tire...all the old school stuff. I wasn't planning on buying a cab, I was just using this car as the base line to compare the others I was driving. But this one drove better than all the others, had the best history, and I started to really enjoy the cab feature so I just surrendered to the car and bought it.
I actually sold a couple of my Rolexes to help finance this car. I rotate my remaining two Rolexes when driving it. The only DIY I partake in is washing it once a week. For the time being my 2013 GTI has become "the collector car" with only 8700 miles. It gets to go to dinner when there is another couple and I might give it a couple of track days.
I never thought I'd do the cabriolet thing either, but found a beauty with an included hardtop.
Unfortunately, I have to clean out a side of the garage before I can remove that hartop, as my window on the soft top has delaminated (common issue).
When I had my cab, I was the jackass driving around with the top down, heater on and heavy coat in 45 degree weather. I loved it. Now the first thing I do in my coupe is open the sunroof and roll down the windows when I get in. It's not as good as a cab but surprisingly close. I've always thought sunroof's were useless until this car. I guess since you are so close to the roof it gives it a different feeling.
I really miss having the 986 on days when work has been brutal. It sounds cheesey, but getting in the cab, firing it up, and retracting the top was very often cathartic...the worries of the day were blown away during the drive home.
My brother and I did this in high school in my Dad's GTO convertible. Great excuse to get cozy under a blanket with the girls we'd give rides to school with.
Ask, and ye shall receive! 1970, residing happily in my garage in the Bay Area, not far from her birthplace of Fremont.
The nice new top on her is why I can't immediately put a new one on the 996...
That GTO is beautiful. And cool that it was your dad's. How long's it been in the family? Coincidentally (and not to thread hijack), I just finished fixing up my '74 Charger, which I then sold to buy the 996.
I'm also very much with the "top down whatever the weather" school of thought. My wife's "fun car" is an old Saab convertible which almost never has the roof up, even in the winter.
Pops bought it in 1970 in Phoenix, AZ. So - 46 years! Some of my earliest childhood memories are riding in the back of that car. Also, my parents had a rule of always rolling down the windows when the top was down - windows up and top down was "tacky."
Anyway, sorry for the detour. Beauty of a 996 John.
A buck says the fifty-four-year-old non-date Rolex Oyster Perpetual from the Caracas store of Serpico Y Laino is still safely ensconced in the Sherman Oaks vaults of Ireland and Co...quite possibly wrapped in a wrinkled oxford cloth button down collar shirt and tucked into a worn out Converse sneaker for safekeeping (most likely the left one, since the right one has a little-toe-sized hole in the canvas).
Theoretically.
You have it right. I sold my twin 1013s with the white silver dials to a collector in Washington DC. He immediately took them to Paris and sold at least one of them there. So the crusty old Serpico Y Laino and a simple steel version (reference number 1018) are the last two and keepers and I rotate them every day or so.
Today was so nice I couldn't stay in the house. Dropped the top and cruised through the back roads and canyons of the Hollywood Hills. Some of the views were wonderful, and the tiptronic was the perfect match for the dream like pace I was driving. I ended up at a home in Beverly Hills the owners bought in the early mid 1950s. I heard it was still in the family and so I knocked on the door...no answer. I left my card in the door and drove home. This evening the 92 year old woman, mother of the kids I played with, gave me a call. We'll meet for drinks next week.
The car ran beautifully. Even without my hearing aids the motor was always there keeping me company. Time to go downstairs to the garage and put the cover on it.
