In my case I also needed to split the vent from the square tubing at the back, one side was loose, for the other side, I used a large flat bladed screw driver to pry it out, I gave the whole thing a good dousing of WD40 to make it a nice smooth action.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I'm working my way through "stuff I can't live with" on my new to me 996. I have an early 1998 built car, and the vent on the drivers side (with the light switch in it) was a mess. I used these details from MC Carbon "MC Carbon vent removal instuctions" for the removal but there a few things that are "different" so anyone else looking to remove the vent on an early car you need to watch out for this. The socket size on my car is 24mm. I also have an additional wire underneath the main one. The tape wrapping this has disintegrated so take care when removing the vent, it left a mess on my dash and bits have dropped onto the carpet ggrrrrrrrrr. I wrapped the wire in electrical tape before putting it back to tidy it up. Pictures below show the rebuilt vent. Its working now so saves me buying one on ebay (as I have tons of other things I need). Inside the vent itself there is a curved connector that joins all the separate vents together allowing them to articulate, this had come off. Its a PITA to put this back and you need good light to see what's happening, but without loosing my temper too often and I don't think my kids learn't any new anglo saxon words I managed to get it back together. In my case I also needed to split the vent from the square tubing at the back, one side was loose, for the other side, I used a large flat bladed screw driver to pry it out, I gave the whole thing a good dousing of WD40 to make it a nice smooth action. A final note regarding reassembly, I "bolted" the light switch assembly back in hand tight so as not to damage anything. The removable **** would not re-engage into the retaining groove, I disassembled the **** itself thinking the somehow the spring loaded blade had maybe got bent or was not returning fully, but not that. Tightening the switch retaining nut a little more fixed it.
