If the car is free of mice (or rat or even squirrel) infestation and the doors/cabin are dry then a window regulator (or door lock controller) becomes much more likely an explanation.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Took the car out today after sitting for a couple months (the car has been sitting, not me ). Went to the grocery store. A couple grocery bags fit nicely in the frunk. Anyway, got home and the drivers side window started acting goofy. I closed the door and instead of lowering the usual 1/2 inch or so it went down about 4 inches. Got back in the car and put the window back up all the way and noticed it was making a grinding sound. Closed the door and it went back down the 4" again. I tried using the key in the door and holding it it the lock position for a few seconds to close the window. It closes but then immediately goes back down 4". Passenger side works fine. Using the search function and seeing others with window problems, it sounds like the regulator mechanism but wanted some other opinions as I didn't see any others with the exact same problem.

you have a bad window regulator

POST 3Original post

I will be proactive here. If the regulator is replaced, remember to remove what I will call the Boxster plug. If the Boxster plug is not removed, your window will go down most of the way, but not all the way. If a shop installs a regulator for you, check that the window goes down all the way before driving away.

POST 4Original post

Spork my brotha... I feel ya... I've down this road recently too. I went with an aftermarket regulator and all is fine. Be sure you follow the directions in the video! Here's the thread... https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-grinding.html

Good call. To elaborate, it's a little plastic rivet that is in one of the window tracks near the bottom (but not right AT the bottom). There are several, the easiest way to figure out which one is to lay both mechanisms on the ground next to each other and compare the tracks inch by inch. It's very easy to forget to do this even once you know about it (ask me how I know this....) And make sure you have your radio code as you will want to disconnect the battery before futzing with the door's airbag.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 13746055

It is not clear it is a bad window regulator problem. A long shot but have you tried resetting the window limits? With the key on push and hold the lower button until the window is all the way down. Then press and hold the raise button and keep holding it down until the window is all the way up and for at least 5 seconds after. Release the raise button. Repeat this for the other window. If the window still misbehaves a window regulator becomes a more likely explanation. But so to does the door lock controller/assembly which has some electronics in it which control when the window drops and by how much when the handle is pulled. Be sure the door bottoms are dry. Water can get in the door and if the door membrane is bad this can let water into the dry side of the door. This can initially cause door/window gremlins. While you are there, so to speak, be sure the cabin floor is dry too. Check those body water drains! If the doors and cabin floor are dry there's always a concern about a car that has been sitting a while unused and that is mice have been at the car. Generally the doors are not the first area mice will invade but they will chew wiring harnesses and damage to this can cause all sorts of electrical gremlins. You have to carefully check the car over for mice sign. Look in top of the plastic underbody panels for mice trash/litter. Shine a bright light on top of the engine looking for mice sign. Check the carpets. Mice like to remove patchs of carpet pile for nest building. If the car is free of mice (or rat or even squirrel) infestation and the doors/cabin are dry then a window regulator (or door lock controller) becomes much more likely an explanation. To know which one can require a tech with a Porsche diagnostic computer to query the car's security module for any error codes or to run a system checkout to pinpoint a problem. Otherwise you are faced with throwing parts at the behavior. Since the window regulator is the least expensive item compared to the door lock controller then replacing the window regulator would be the next step.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13747316

I just tried the reset thing. It stopped the window from going down the 4 inches but now it doesn't go down the 1/2" either so can't shut the door. I have to lower the window to shut it. Hasn't rained here in months and temps have been 90 to 100+ all summer (it was 90 yesterday! Ugh ) and haven't washed the car in quite some time so there is no water in the car. Car sits in the garage so no rodents either. I'm quite certain it is the regulator as it makes a horrible grinding noise. Looks like I'll be pulling the door apart. Thanks for all the replies and info.

POST 10Original post

Yea, Spork... I'm afraid until you get a new regulator, you'll be shooting yourself in the foot. Window clamps that grip the cable guide could be moving which could explain your problem. There's a slight chance the motor may be malfunctioning too. But first things first, purchase a replacement regulator and then test. Follow the directions in the video and you should be fine. All the best!

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 13749333

That lack of drop now after the reset does point more to a bad regulator. As I think I mentioned previously it was a very feeble drop, more a twitch of the window than a drop, that my Boxster window manifested that prompted a new regulator. In fact both doors got a new regulator. When the tech removed the old regulator it just came apart, the original regulator was that worn out.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Replaced the regulator today. Not difficult and followed some of the YouTube videos. I marked the window location with masking tape and re-aligned it when I put the window back in. Tested it full up and down before I put the door panel back on and it worked fine. Somewhere along the way custom door speakers were installed and they didn't use quick disconnects so I unscrewed the speaker and just let it sit on the door jamb. Of course this prevented me from closing the door until I got it all buttoned back up. Got it all done and then closed the door only to find out the window is slightly out of alignment. Argh! Now I have to pull the door panel back off, loosen the clamp bolts and adjust it slightly. If you guys do this project, make sure you close the door and check alignment before buttoning it all back up!

POST 13Original post

Glad you got it to work. Yea, I almost put the panel back on myself, but quickly checked the seal around the weather stripping and noticed there was a gap at the top corner of the window. Simple adjustment when the door panel is off, but I'm sure it would be a major pain if you put all the door back together and then realized it. ouch!

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This isn't the first stupid thing I've done while working on cars! The ironic thing is that I was taking my time and not rushing it. Tested it with the door open but didn't think about testing it closed. Maybe I should make my own video and include that in the instructions! Oh well, I guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow morning! Supposed to be mid 70's tomorrow so maybe I'll reward myself when I'm done with a nice drive through the mountains. Now if I can rope someone into helping me take the hardtop off I can finally put the top down.

POST 15Original post

So Spork, you gonna keep the Porsche? Seems like I remember you thinking about selling it. It's beautiful looking cabriolet.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13789950

I don't have it advertised but it is for sale. It's a great car but I really want a coupe. I put a hard top on it and it made quite a difference in the feel of the car but makes me want a coupe even more!

POST 17Original post

Yea... I'm with you. Sometime I think the same... but it's a love/hate thang. You get a coupe, you then want a convertible, you get a convertible, you then want a truck, then you want sedan, then you really want a convertible again.... and the cycle continues. bwhahahaha!!!!!
