Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Just to give you an example of how you have range in tire, Jim, I'm running 225/40 F and 285/30 R on the same TechArt wheel.
Leading evidence: 'Run 225/40 f and 285/30 r' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run 225/40 f and 285/30 r' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. i run now 235/40 with 275/35 on my 18 Carrera 5spoke 8J/10J and 235/40 with 295/30 on the Techart Formula 8.5J/10.5J
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Did searches but I still need to be certain all over the internet, but I still need to be certain.
We bought a 1999 Carrera 4. It came with the 17 inch wheels, which my wife found profoundly ugly, so I got the Carrera II 18 inch rims.
The optional tire size for the 18s in 1999 for the rear are 265 35 18, but these rims are to take 285 30 18. Fronts are to be 225 40 18 regardless.
For our NB mk1 car, what do we go with?
On the 18 size 8 en 10 rims it is standard 225/40 front and 265/35 or 285/30 rear. If they are the Carrera 2 5-spoke this should be fine with offsets.
Forgive my ignorance when it comes to tires. The offsets for the rear is 65 on these 18s. The rear 17s are 49/55 - whatever that means.
I know I don't need offsets for the front. How much for the rear?
and 265 wouldn't look strange compared to 285 on a 10 inch rim?
65 is the ET value for those 18 10J rear Carrera 2 rims for the narrow body. That is okay. I even ran 295/30 on a 10 wide rim. Depending on the tyre model it fits okay. But it is on the upper limit. The Yoko AD08r 295/30 fits pretty good on 10

I have a narrow body C2 mk2. I think above combinations will also fit the C4 as they are a close match in circumference.
Thank you silk.
keep in mind, our car is a mk1 and the fenders are not rolled, but I am reading here and elsewhere that I am fine and no spacer required. This right?
Just to give you an example of how you have range in tire, Jim, I'm running 225/40 F and 285/30 R on the same TechArt wheel. No spacers, gizmos, or tricks to fit.
Also as an example I can run 295/30 with or without 5 mm spacers on 11" wheels with I believe ET63 if I remember correctly. The car is lowered and fenders are not rolled. Never had any rubbing So there is plenty of room.
Can I ask for ajother favour?
would those of you who have 265 or 285 post pics? I am curious to see the difference in how the different widths look on the rim.
cheers
My wife will do spirited driving, but certainly won't be worried about I creating acceleration.
in fact, she wants all seasons to account for the weather in the shoulder seasons. That has now put 285 out as an option, as there are no all season options. I do see it for 275 and 265, though.
I think we will go with 275 like Silk to get all season and a more square look.
275/35 will be taller than the other options making oversteer more likely & slightly more difficult to engage clutch possibly leading to increased clutch wear
I am not sure why anyone would go with less than 285 on 10" wheel. I have 265 on my son's 9" boxster wheels which are also 18. The one exception may be for snowtires.
Lowpue,
I need to go less because I can't find all seasons in 285. And she is adamant on all seasons (her car, afterall. I got my Mustang).
VitaminC,
Those look great. MUCH better than these:
