OP...I am down the road in Dallas, and I highly recommend max legal tint everywhere, and ceramic on the windshield.

Owner of a 99 Cab black on black which is not modded out. Hard top is currently installed.
Took the X5 to get tints today and am entertaining the idea. Currently in OK which is HOT! The car is not a DD.
Thoughts? If so, 35% or 30%. If not why...
Thanks!
I have black on black and the tint sets it off. Unfortunately, in Va. we have pretty strict tint laws. Legal tint isn't even worth getting. Mine isn't that dark but illegal. I've gotten pulled over for it on the hwy. Watched it all develop in my rear view window. Trooper did a 180, jumped on the expressway doing every bit of 80-90mph, shot down the exit ramp, rolled up behind me then beside me, back behind me and popped the lights. I want to think he was hoping for something else. All that for a first offense $100 tint ticket seemed a little extreme. Still have my tint. Hopefully the tint laws in OK are different!
I think dark tint on a black 996 looks bitchin'...I don't see why it wouldn't look equally bitchin' on a cab. I'd go light on the front (if you're even allowed to tint the front) so you don't have a weird look when the top's down.
I am breaking several laws - dark tint on side windows, no front plate, and one or two others that I think would be getting me pulled over constantly if it wasn't a 911. My Korean import got pulled over repeatedly for these
serious
offenses...
Why do it? Because you like the way it looks and tint will help keep the interior a little cooler while the car is parked. Aesthetically...
- With the top up, it looks fine...just like any other car with tinted windows.
- With the top down and the windows down, it looks like any other Cab.
- With the top down and the windows up, it looks odd to me.
I'm also up in CT and while we have hot muggy summers, it's not my thing because of the third point. Then again, I'm not in OK! Just do it. You know you want to.
My $.02,
-Eric
I have black on black as well but wanted to keep it more like OEM style so went with 40 on rear and 50 on sides.
Some might think it's too light, like my tint guy, but I was happy that it provided just enough UV protection without seeming overly aftermarket. If my car was a DD though, I'd probably have considered 35% for the added protection and heat reflection.
What's hypocritical about the "tint law" is that most of the cops have their cruisers tinted much darker than the legal limit yet love to hand out tickets for us common folk wanting to do the same.
I have my blue cab tinted in Atlanta where it gets pretty hot. Can't imagine no tint. Looks good but agreed kind of odd with top down windows up. Don't do that often though.
I vote for tint. I know it helps with the heat here in Mississippi. Looks great on a black car in my opinion. I agree on the top down windows up looking odd, but that's not a big deal. I *think* mine is 35, but the PO did it.
Having some idea what it'd cost to refurbish a 996 interior, this Virginian believes in tinting. The commonwealth has separate standards for the drivers window vs all the others. I usually put 'drivers window' on the whole car: I get the practical advantages, subtle cosmetic improvement (imo), and Zero attention from the vigilant, highly profitable arm of the law.
Anyone else tried tinting the hardtop? I went to the best two tinters in town and they said they couldn't do it? Has anyone gotten there hardtop back window done?
I went with 20% on the front and quarters and it looks great!
Show them how you can take the hard top off and take the parcel shelf off it too and it will be easy for them.
I've been considering tinting my silver cab with hard top also... but don't want to have side windows tinted but a clear rear window on the soft top.
I just went through this last weekend. We had to take the hardtop off then the fabric for the parcel top and they we able to do it no problem. The fabric was held in by six clips, we they were done I just snapped it back on
OP...I am down the road in Dallas, and I highly recommend max legal tint everywhere, and ceramic on the windshield. It's made a world of diff. In summer, I keep the windows cracked just a bit, pop the sun roof and put a sun visor in the front windshield...T
There is a relatively new tint film that is on the market now that has ceramic **** in it that filters out a ****load of the UV with very little coloring (i.e. it is practically clear). Kinda expensive but awesome as hell. I love it.
Did you not read my post RIGHT ABOVE YOURS? There is high quality UV filtering tint that keeps your car cool and protected that is practically invisible.
Florida=brutal sun and heat=tint for survival. Every car here has tinted windows unless you're a moron and could give a crap about your car. The SUV's mostly are blacked out on the rear windows. Figure they are hauling kids around. Mine has ceramic tint all around. Legal tint on drivers/passenger windows and the rest dark tint. Saves a lot of wear and tear on the interior and the car is definitely cooler. Summer time sun and temps from March - December makes it a necessity for my DD. My two cents....
We have had a few cars and to tell you the truth our Family cars are all tinted and we like them for what the tint was made for... keeping the vehicle cooler and the appearance looks good too!
I have been asked more than a few times why I don't tint my 996... I don't want to... my car is not a DD... she is a weekend fun car and an I try to Autocross her as much as I can... I need to see where the hell I'm going!
In the end its your call... If you want the tint and you can afford it... go for it!
Most tint guys only carry up to 40%. I had to practically beg my tint guy to actually tint my windows with 50%. He thought he'd be taking a big risk with me wanting to have him do it again darker afterwards. I assured him I wouldn't .
Afterwards, he said he could hardly notice it. I told him, "exactly".
This is funny coming from a guy who only posts photos in which he looks like Reuben, the great white pimp of Sault Ste. Marie...(servicing the gentlemanly needs of the Upper Peninsula since 1942).
I have ceramic film on both our cars, the installer showed me the specs and all shades including the one almost clear have the same UV blockage, so I went with that one because dark tints make it difficult for me to see out at night. The only downside to ceramic film is if you wear polarized sunglasses, other peoples' cars windows look like psychedelic rainbows
