I am also looking at the softer FF insert for the Trans to compliment the new OE engine mounts I replaced couple of weeks ago...

Suspected cause
I suspect the exhaust tips would come up nearly an inch with fresh mounts.

Suggestion
By that, I meant have new mounts on hand, so you arn't "just checking" them and then are unable to put the car back together!

Suggestion
I have a 2000 C2 Cab and just changed mine yesterday with Porsche OEM and I do feel a difference in the gear change especially to first from a standstill.

Suggestion
If you replaced those with urethane units and the shifting improved then you STILL have problems with the transmission but you just don't notice it as much.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can someone please post a pic showing the correct spacing of the exhaust tips for a 2000 C2?
Just trying to determine if it is my turn in the barrel.
Btw, tips are stock but mufflers are by GHL, if that matters.
It's a 16 year old car and the motor mounts are a wear item .
If they have never been changed , it's time .
Your car will fell better . Especially on swift uphill bends
The stock mounts aren't great to start with .
Wevos are are good balance between firmness and low nvh .
Plus they will last twice as long as the oem ones .
I don't think solid ones are a good idea , even on a track car.
I have a 2000 C2 Cab and just changed mine yesterday with Porsche OEM and I do feel a difference in the gear change especially to first from a standstill. It was very notchy and hard to engage before. The overall drive is also more firm and solid so you should definitely change yours if it has never been replaced before. It's a pretty simple DIY if you have a good jack-stand and a basic set of sockets and a deep 18mm with 6" extension.
BTW my exhaust tips were slightly uneven and 10mm-15mm lower compared with the new mounts. You can clearly see that difference if you compare the Old vs New mounts side by side. Do a search for the DIY, because there are many available online. Good-luck, cheers,
Ty triple, mine have just a bit more room than yours, but as someone said, with60k on the car, it might be close to time.
Not sure if I will go the aftermarket route or Oem.
I'm leaning toward some like the Wevo that someone mentioned as the car already has an x-74 euro sport suspension on it.
Btw- just to throw gas on the fire; original IMS, Rms, Abc, Def, etc.
I just put my rennline mounts on today, and it made a huge difference. Car only has 50k miles on it. I'll make the statement that any 996 with the original motor mounts should have them replaced immediately.
After seeing this thread, questioning the gap in the tailpipe area on my 99 C2. Is there a direct relationship between gap and motor mount life? Photo attached, and guidance welcome. Thanks!
This is a public service announcement: brought to you by the members of rennlist. If you ask the question if you need new motor mounts, the general consensus will be yes you do. It doesn't matter if you just changed them this morning... We will all tell you to replace them. Haha
The stud sheared out of mine when I pulled it two days ago for the upgrade. I would have new ones on hand. It can also be hard to tell visually unless you have a fresh mount on hand to compare with. Just because it isn't leaking doesn't mean that it's factory fresh.
I am surprised that people are focusing more on the exhaust tips as a sign of wear instead of how the car drives. The mounts on my '03 were "fine" according to the PPI I had, but I could absolutely feel the motor moving. Fast shifting would clunk, clutch engagement felt imprecise, and transitioning from acceleration/deccelleration the slack in the drivetrain/mounts was very evident. I noticed it immediately on my test drive of the car, even having never driven an MT 996 before. This is was on a car that I purchased with 48k miles.
In my car, the "sloshing water in a bucket" feel was pretty evident when taking turns at any kind of speed (40 - 50 mph). The tips were pretty low as well...The shifting was "notchy" as well, but there are several components that contribute to that, so the new motor mounts only improved the shifting marginally - definite improvement, but not earth shattering. A larger effect on shifting came from the Function First Transmission mount insert - but along with that came considerable NVH
I had the same experience when I bought new OEM mounts. I ditched those the same week and got poly mounts and much better.
Personally I wouldn't bother with new regular(oem or aftermarket replacement) mounts. As long as they're liquid filled, you are leaving some performance on the table in place of max comfort(nvh wise). For me, I'd gladly sacrifice a bit of NVH to get more performance and have it drive like the older gen 911's. YMMV
OK; just to clarify - do you have to remove the air pump on a 2001 C2 to get the left mount out? Pelican's DIY notes show this being done, but it seems all Rennlisters are swapping the mounts in 20 mins or less.
I'm not even sure if I need them but I know mine are original, 3rd can sometimes be difficult to engage, and now I want them...for no particular reason. I have a problem. Time to start reading up. lol

Yes, but it takes seconds. With a 10mm socket one nut needs to come off, and the one on the bottom loosened, for that whole bracket the pump is on to come free. With the hose off it there is tons of room to work. I didn't even need to jack up the car to switch mounts.
The motor mounts are the exact same ones used in the 993 and if anything are stiffer than the earlier air-cooled cars. Remember that the drivetrain in the 996 is on a three point suspension. The motor mounts are two points, the transmission mount is the other. Yes the motor sloshes a bit with good oem mounts but it is very predictable and should be more than adequate unless you track the car. I personally believe that many people are using stiffer mounts to compensate for worn transmission mounts. While the motor mounts are an easy twenty minute job the transmission mount is a lot of work and until FF came out with their transmission mount inserts, there was no easy way to fix it. You had to drop the transmission smash out the old mount and press in a new one. It can make a world of difference. Because motor mounts are easy, most of our 996s have had at least one replacement pair. I doubt 20% have gotten new transmission mounts; ever.
In my case I think it's important to point out that when I installed the Function 1st inserts (the black version - quite a bit of NVH) the shifting got noticeably better, so between this and the motor mounts it's almost night and day (I also got a B&M ssk which was another incremental improvement over the 997 shifter I was using). Which poly mounts are u using?
+1. I wasn't sure if my car needed new motor mounts either ('02 C4 w/ Tip @ 70k mi) so I asked them to check during a recent oil change. While they said they weren't too bad, they said the transmission mount was shot. I replaced all 3 and what a huge improvement. All of my mechanical clunking in the driveline has gone away.
If you have problems shifting AFTER you replace the mounts with new OE ones then you have other issues with the transmission. If you replaced those with urethane units and the shifting improved then you STILL have problems with the transmission but you just don't notice it as much. Either way, the transmission is trying to tell you it's slowly dying.
Which replacement motor mounts are preferred nowadays (mostly street w a few track days a year)?? I'm just getting to mine and reached out to FF - apparently they don't offer their mounts anymore!
I see Wevo, Rennline an OE here. Anyone still refurbing OEM?
I can say good things about the rennlines, and have heard good things about the wevo and RSS mounts. Don't think you can wrong with any of those.
The oem mounts are definitely going to be the quietest though.
replaced mine today, the posts weren't as bagged out as some I've seen but it did make a difference. Maybe FF inserts next, what's the consesnsus. Are FF inserts a DIY job?
I am also looking at the softer FF insert for the Trans to compliment the new OE engine mounts I replaced couple of weeks ago... So far I am happy with the new engine mounts. Cheers,
I purchased mine used, either from the classifieds here or 6speed... It was a great deal as it came already installed in a 997 base so it was a direct swap out (no messing around with bushings and whatnots) with my existing 997 shifter.
