Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi there, Last week I did the oil change in my 2002 996, when I removed the canister, the filter came up, I didn't pay much attention, I cleaned the canister, I put the new filter and screwed back the canister as everyone does. This thread scared me : http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1035039 I didn't notice the springs at the bottom of the canister, but should I have one? I have the 3.6 maybe the thread consern the 3.4? Do you have a springs that maintain the oil filter in your canister? Thanks everyone, sorry for my bad english.

POST 2Original post

You canister bottom should look like this (1st row, third photo from the left) http://specialtycarsservicecenter.co...e1462478463487 The spring is beneath the silver round disc so you won't see it but you should see the silver disc (looks more like copper due to the used oil).

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for this quick response, I am not sure to seen it, I prefer don't use it. That's sucks, I planned to use it tomorrow for a road trip to NYC. I will investigate next week, but I am wondering if I need to drain again all the engine oil before removing the canister?

POST 5Original post

Maybe if you do a little searching you will find your answer will give you a pass this time 1 you can remove the oil filter and it won't drain out oil from the sump, just the few oz's in the filter 2 there is no spring to push the filter onto the engine block. The person on pistonheads was wrong. There is a bypass valve in the filter canister that allows oil to flow should the filter become clogged 3 all M96 engines use the same filter and canister

POST 6Original post

Just show us a pic pf the canister inside bottom then we can tell you if anything is missing.
