Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Yep, that was disconnected before yanking out the console.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect before yanking out the console' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Did you remember to disconnect/reconnect the small wire that goes to the underside of the console lid lock assembly?

I don't want to change the topic from the OP's issue.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Took off center console to tighten shifter cables. Unplugged the switches for windows etc. Forgot to remove car battery.
Brother came over to my place and wanted to move car, put key in ignition while it was all taken apart, turned key; nothing. No dash lights, no crank, etc
Now I'm putting it back together and I have this extra plug, any idea where it goes?
I had my console out last night to do the painted console swap and install my 997 shifter and I was wondering the same thing. I didn't remember disconnecting that harness so I shoved it back behind the console and forgot about it.
Did you remember to disconnect/reconnect the small wire that goes to the underside of the console lid lock assembly?
Um, there should not be any critical wire under the front console that will cut power to the dash. Any electrical stuff works?
Sounds like a bad ignition switch? Does the cigarette lighter socket have power?
Not necessarily but the more eletrical things you can id that work (interior lights, central lock, radio, headlight, etc) the easier to figure out where the power got interrupted.
OK - if you say so!
A cool upgrade I've done on two 996's now is to get factory matched exterior color paint in spray cans from Express Paint (no affiliation) and paint the rear center console.
Here is what I did:
1) Remove console (without breaking anything).
2) Remove the console lid, lock mechanism and side piece near handbrake. Also remove and put aside the front and rear trim pieces, which I did not paint.
3) Wash all parts to be painted with soap and water. Mask off the light bulb and harness connector on the power window trim piece.
4) With 100 and then 400 grit sandpaper, sand off all of the rubberized coating. This will take a while, so be patient and get it all down to the dark gray base plastic finish. Don't forget the inside of the storage area.
5) Prime all parts, let them dry, then wet sand with 400 grit. Do this 2-3 times until everything is smooth.
6) Spray several coats of the color coat. I only sprayed with the console flat on a piece of cardboard and I ended up with some orange peel along the lower sides. Make sure you hang the parts on a wire and get a good wet even coat of color everywhere. Also make sure you spray all the parts at the same time to get consistent color coverage.
7) Spray 3-4 coats of clear. Several light coats and then several wet coats. Don't worry about runs. Use up the entire can because you'll be wet sanding most of the clear coat off.
8) Let the parts bake in the sun for at least 3 days.
9) Wet sand with 2000 grit until everything is evenly dull. If you've put on enough clear coat you won't go through the color coat and have to start over (ask me how I know).
10) Use a mild rubbing compound and then a mild polish to hand polish the parts.
11) Install console sides, lock assembly and lid. Install console without scratching anything.
12) Wait 2 weeks before waxing.
