Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Otherwise as suggested, purge valve sticking (open), fuel pump, or a usual suspect for "it cranks but doesn't start" - the CPS.
Leading evidence: '"it cranks' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '"it cranks' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I also was having issues every time I would fuel up which was due to the Regeneration Valve.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Asking for a good friend who went to the water cooled side from the air side. 99 C2 cab, 6-speed. When the car is cold (sat over night or a few hours), fires right up. No problem. After it's hot, and you try to turn it on, it won't start. It cranks and whines. On about the 4th time it will catch. Thoughts?
Thanks!
There is a common heat soak issue with the starter - but if the car is cranking normally and not firing, this is not the issue. The heat soak issue (like mine currently has) makes it sound like the starter is struggling to turn the car over. "Whines" makes me think that maybe it's not turning over as easily as it does when it's cold, but some additional explanation (or video) would be helpful.
If the engine is turning over normally but not starting, it's either a fuel or spark issue. Since there are (presumably) no misfire codes, I'd take a look at the fuel pump.
Another possibility is the purge valve sticking. The most common symptom is that after the car is hot; if you start it back up soon (say less than 30 minutes but depends much on ambient temp), starts fine but if you let it sit longer; it cranks normally but takes several tries to get it to start. If that is the symptom, it is an easy part to check. Numerous threads on here about it. Part is expensive (~200+) but many times it can be cleaned and all better.
Okay, let me understand. Cold start - turn key, starter cranks and engages, engine starts.
Hot - turn key, starter cranks and engages, engine turns over and does not start.
The whine part is what I don't understand. Do you mean the starter engages and the engine turns over and over and does not start? So it is cranking the engine?
Or is the starter not engaging and just spinning? Is that the whine? If so, bad bendix on starter.
Otherwise as suggested, purge valve sticking (open), fuel pump, or a usual suspect for "it cranks but doesn't start" - the CPS. I am assuming full battery charge and no other symptoms (CEL's) or misfires when it is running.
full battery, fuel, etc. Cold start, fires right up. Hot start, cranks- sounds like weak battery. Does this about 3 times and then maybe on the 4th it catches. Think it's the starter getting heat soaked
+1 on the Purge valve. On my 2000 C2 I had the same issue. I also was having issues every time I would fuel up which was due to the Regeneration Valve. I had them replaced and everything works perfect.
From your expanded description, it sounds like it is cranking slower than normal or intermittently (cranking speed-nothing to do with whether it catches or not) shortly after driving. If that is the case I would say starter, alternator or "Y" cable. How is the voltage when you're driving?
