You could change tire pressure and see a similar change in cabin noise.

While I could use the cables from donor car, I'm going to order new OEM's.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For what its worth and no actual data, Ive noticed no difference between my old OEM cables and the FF.
FUNCTION-FIRST presents the
Premium "Quiet" Shifter Cables...
* ALL THE FEEL... WITHOUT ALL THE NOISE! *
Hello fellow 996 enthusiasts! Very excited to share details on the
FFP Premium "Quiet" Shifter Cables
. Think of these as
augmented
OEM cables with
no corners cut or compromises made
.
These have been on the market since late 2023, but I never "officially" shared info in the tech forum - so here we go! Looking forward to diving into some more in-depth technical detail by answering your questions on the subject.
Through extensive engineering, testing, and development, we were able to combine the best attributes of "OEM" cables and "Competition" cables into one comprehensive package.
The result is a
stronger and more precise
than "OEM" cable assembly that remains
smoother and quieter
than "Competition" cables.
Beyond implementing an
up-sized cable gauge for enhanced durability
, these cable assemblies are
fully isolated
from the transmission mounting points via the integrated
rubber-damped mounts
to
greatly reduce NVH
transmitted into the cabin.
Further design enhancements reduce the metal-metal contact points wherever possible for
reduced rattles
, as well as using bespoke and
tightly toleranced
Delrin cable ends for
unparalleled precision
. Plus, provision for
safety pins
at the ends ensures the cables cannot pop off.
Whether you're building an all out racecar or the ultimate daily driver,
you no longer have to compromise -- FFP's "Quiet" Cables upgrade checks all the boxes.
Key Design Features:
Up-sized cable diameter
with armored jacket for increased strength, durability, and rigidity
Rubber-Damped mounting blocks
to
greatly mitigate NVH transfer
and to reduce shift notchiness
Nylon-coated cable and liner with optimized entry-exit geometry for
smoother and more "natural" gear engagement
Pre-Applied insulation on cable conduit exterior for further
reduced NVH
Bespoke and tightly-toleranced
aluminum Cable Ends with
Delrin internals
to eliminate sponginess and excess play
Cable Ends with provision for "safety pins" to
ensure cables cannot pop off
Keyed anti-rotation mounting blocks for
easier install
Pre-assembled
cable ends for minimal adjustment hassles during install process
plus,
installation tools are included!
Fitment = 996 / 997
(1999 - 2012) manual transmission WITH ball-end selectors
(will soon be releasing cable ends for use on the early 996 transmissions that utilize the "pivot pin" style gear selector)
They are actually 2 different SKUs.
The cables need to be ordered based on the chassis/transmission.
The 996 cables are slightly longer overall and have different "Cable Mount -to- Cable End" dimensions, compared with the 997 cables.
Similar to OEM, the FFP 996 ad 997 cables are not cross-compatible with one another, as best fitment requires that these have dedicated dimensions.
Hello!
I bought my 996 with a Numeric shifter & cables, but they're too noisy and clunky. I'm looking for a quiet and smooth feel for daily driving.
If I replace my 996 shifter with the 997 shifter assembly (997-424-010-00) and want to replace my Numeric cables with FFP cables
1) Do I buy the 996 or 997 FFP Cables?
2) What is the length difference?
3) What are the effects of fitting the wrong size cables?
Thank you in advance!
@Function-First
Are they offered without the Cable Ends? I already have them installed in my OEM cables.
also have the SRK, Black Shifter and Derlin shift ****. Very happy with all of them.
U want the 996 cables. 997 trans shift levers r on the drivers side. I am 99.9% sure all 996 and 997 shifters use the same fittings at the shfter side.
Thank you for asking, those are great questions!
I edited my previous post with updated fitment information:

The FFP "Quiet" Premium Cables already come with their own dedicated bespoke Cable Ends that are identical in internal construction to the "Solid Cable Ends" upgrade you referenced.
(The Solid Cable Ends upgrade is only compatible with the OEM cables.)
Better yet, how quiet they are as compared to Numeric cables or "competition/Cup" cables... Maybe even post cabin video/audio (with DB meter) of both? In other words some sort of quantifiable comparison as opposed to "They're quieter"... Not trying to be difficult, just looking for solid data. Also, how much do they cost? Thanks
Gonna have a hard time quantifing this.... i think no additional nvh is what ff is going for. Also some people have an issue with the numeric cables but i couldnt detect any addution noise from mine.
I dont think it should be too difficult. Yes, every car will a little different, but if you get:
A) A car with stock cables (stock everything would be best)
B) A car with a Numeric shifter (and ideally numeric cables)
C) A car with both the above variations, and the FF cables (instead of the stock & numeric).
Each one should be driven through all gears and the cockpit noise level should be recorded (video & audio along with a db/level meter).
This should provide all the data necessary to make an informed decision
Now we just need the same year and trim level (base vs full leather) on the same piece of road with the car at the same temp. 1-2dB is plenty of difference for these cables but hardly anything for a measurement device on what you are asking for. And measuring across these 3 configurations IS a lot of work. Hundreds of people, or thousands in some cases have compared these. That should be plenty for you to make a decision.
You could change tire pressure and see a similar change in cabin noise. If you think that means its too trivial to argue over, then just pick one. Otherwise, the objective details provided by the manufacturer and many many subjective reviews and discussions offer plenty of nuance for your discretion.
Yeah, that's what I meant by [B] " Yes, every car will a little different, but " [B]... And yes it's a lot of work -[B]"Through extensive engineering, testing, and development, we were able to combine the best attributes of "OEM" cables and "Competition" cables into one comprehensive package."[B] All that development and no actual noise data? That seems suspect to me - or maybe just poor marketing - they are making a claim and selling a product based on that work - they should be able to back up that claim with real data. If there is a 1-2 db difference they should be able to show that (yes a db meter can absolutely show that - it doesn't even have to be a dedicated meter - an app on a smart phone will do) In fact they have a graph showing a measurement of vibration - I'm just asking how that relates to sound/cabin noise. I'd argue that while vibration (or lack thereof) is certainly a worthy cause, cabin noise is probably more relatable to the average driver.
Were your OEM cables the original cables in the car? I'm trying to determine if OEM cables get to the point they are not able to be adjusted? I'm going to a different shifter than FFP and planning on using the cables in the car. However, everything is going to be apart of is it better to replace them(?)
I do not need competition grade cables and the additional noise reported with numeric cables rules them out. I just want quiet and crisp.
