POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Everyone, Im an owner of a new to me 03 C4S with 37k miles. The car makes a slight ticking noise which I can hear at idle and it either goes away or is no longer audible after 11-1200 rpm. Could you please tell me whether this is something I should be worried about? I have looked at seemingly every thread and video on the internet regarding lifters and other noises, but Im really not sure if some ticking is normal. IMS is newly replaced so I think that can probably be eliminated as a potential concern. Vimeo thank you in advance for the help!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Engine is not fully warmed up but warm enough to go down to a normal idle speed. The noise is the same when the engine is warm. I will add that I think my PSE has a broken mounting? Tab because I get the rattle in first gear only at around 3500 rpm. Could that be causing the issue?

POST 4Original post

Open rear lid and listen to each bank closely, if one side has a ticking sound, that's not so good from what I hear. Not sure exactly the cause. Hopefully others with more knowledge will chime in.

POST 5Original post

Place recording device beneath the cylinder head underneath the car and leave it there for several seconds. Then switch to the other side to do the same. Hard to tell when moving around.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 15288268

Its really faint. I would check exhaust, so try to listen by each of the 6 header outputs. Is your PSE open during this video? Can you hear it more or less with PSE open or closed (on or off)?

POST 7Original post

When is the last time you had an oil change? What weight oil are you using? Have you checked your oil level?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oil was changed right before I picked up the car at the Porsche dealer, about 700 miles ago and oil level is right in the middle when I check at startup. I am not sure what kind they used but guessing Mobil 1 0w40. Should I use a different oil? I will post back with another video holding the camera under the engine when I have some time this weekend. PSE is in default (loud) mode in the video. Doesnt really seem to make a difference whether its open or closed.

POST 9Original post

I was over at the 997 forum reading a few threads on the "bore scoring" phenomenon which seems to be big problem with the M96 and M97 motors. Many claim it has a lot to do with cars from colder climates. Any chance you know where this C4S spent most of it's life? Raby has a different take on the subject and ironically he uses a motor out of a 996 C4S to explain that bore scoring is many times misdiagnosed as a noisey lifter. Check it out... You Tube

I've heard even the dealers are suggesting to run 5w40 Motul 8100. I can't really hear much in the video you posted, but the right oil and weight can have a huge effect on clicks and oil burning.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Car is from NJ, garage kept and dealer serviced its entire life. Given that it only has 37k miles, I assume it was primarily driven in fair weather. I may go to another oil type next change.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 15289477

There's a lot of oils to choose from, and most all of them are pretty darn good. I've done a lot of research on oils over the years, I hang out at bobistheoilguy.com. When researching what oil to use in my 03 996 I chose Lubri Moly 5W-40 (full synthetic). It's made in Germany and meets all the requirements Porsche had for our cars when they were new and it's reasonably priced on Amazon. I just drive my car as a daily driver and I won't be auto-x'ing or tracking the car. On the oil level, for street use I would recommend the level be at the top, not halfway. You will get lots of different recommendations, this is one.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 15289497

To avoid risks of overfilling the car with oil and to prevent damage to the AOS, it's best keep the oil level at the middle of the indicator. When a Porsche 996 is at the (BOTTOM) of the indicator, that means it's only 1 liter low on oil. At that point, it's best to add 1/2 of one quart of oil to the car.

Half way up stick or on e-guage is a pretty common opinion here and by some of those with much knowledge and experience. Each notch on the e-guage on my 2005 is approx. 6.2/6.4 oz.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 15293099

It's a pretty common consensus among those within the Porsche world, that there are more risks associated overfilling a Porsche than under if it's it's a "little low" on the electronic indicator. I've personally witnessed someone that killed a M97 motor by mistakenly overfilling it. The gentlemen checked the oil when the car was on uneven payment and then did the stupid thing by adding more oil thus overfilling it. He then went to drive it and as you may suspect, killed the motor. He ended up not servicing it because of the extremely high repair costs.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 15293183

How long did it take for the motor to let go and what was the damage?

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 15293135

So I checked the owner's manual and wasn't able to find this anywhere. Do you have a page number, or section? As long as I don't fill it "over" the line, I'm going to keep it there. If I do one of my 400 mile drives out in the hill country and use 1/2 qt of oil, that would put me at the bottom line. The top line is where I'll keep it.

POST 28Original post

I'll check. It's possible I read it in the Bentley repair book recently.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 15300524

that would be very high consumption, no?

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 15300651

Not necessarily. The book does say 1 quart per 1000 miles is nothing to worry about. So if SA is tossing it around during those 400 miles I wouldn't get too worried.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 15293540

It's been several years ago and I don't remember what he said was the exact amount of time between overfilling the oil and causing severe damage to the motor. I don't believe it was instant death, but apparently an excessive amount of oil was entering the combustion chamber and was smoking like a freight train. He had it checked out, but the service cost wasn't something he was willing to fork out. He sold it as a roller. The 997 was beautiful. Guards red with tan interior. Very clean, but the owner made a horrible mistake that cost him the car.

POST 33Original post

^^What "book"^^? - not questioning the validity of the claim per se', but I always question when people sight unspecified (yet authoritative) sources... So when you say "The Book", do you mean A) The Bible (B) Jake Raby's as yet unpublished tome on everything M96 (C) The Owners manual (D) The Bentley M96 repair manual etc. etc. etc....

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 15301810

Mea Culpa! I was sure I read that somewhere and still believe I did. Thought it was in the owners manual but checked page 16 and page 172. Nope! Checked the Bentley book...nope! Both do say: "It is normal for your engine to consume oil." Then goes on to what can affect i.e.: "quality and viscosity, speed, climate, road conditions as well as the amount of dilution and oxidation of the lubricant." Because mine uses some oil it is possible that my brain misinterpreted the information I have read. Kind of a mental finger cross. However, on page 172 (owners manual) it says the following: "If the vehicle is driven at a high rate of speed, climate conditions are warm, and the load is high, the oil should be checked more frequently, as driving conditions will determine the rate oil consumption." Sorry, based on information I have my previous post cannot be verified and, at this point, should be considered as inaccurate. I will keep looking or have myself committed! Your Honor I plead stupidity!

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

**UPDATE** Had the car checked out by a local Porsche specialist, he said the noise is completely normal. Told me that a lighter weight oil like the Mobil 1 exacerbates the sound, but if I move to a heavier oil the sound will go away (not trying to start an oil debate here). In either case, I am relieved that the car got a clean bill of health. I have put 1200 miles on it already since buying 4.5 weeks ago and will continue to daily this car for the foreseeable future!

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 15333378

Did he conduct a more thorough, invasive test like a bore scope inspection of all cylinder bore especially #6? Did he remove the oil pan to inspect for oil laden debris? Has the oil been sent for analysis from companies like Blackstone? And lastly, did he run a scan of the ECU for cam deviations and manometer reading to determine how the cylinders are performing?

POST 37Original post

^^^Agree - I also had my ticking sound checked out by a local 'Porsche specialist' who told me there was no issue and I should just use a heaver weight oil. After doing a cylinder bore inspection myself I found it was caused by scored cylinders.

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, he did not, nor did I request an inspection that thorough. I will have the oil sent out to Blackstone next oil change. The car does not exhibit initial symptoms of bore scoring, such as soot in one of the tailpipes, irregular oil consumption (0.2L in the 1,200 miles that I have had it), etc. I looked at the video you posted when you found your scoring and my tapping does not sound like what is posted, from either side of the car. I will continue to enjoy it and regularly service/maintain it with a Porsche specialist, without making myself overly paranoid about every quirk. I feel becoming too worried will take away the enjoyment of owning this car.

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 15334270

Exactly! Bore scoring is a common problem with these motors. I think the problem gets overshadowed by the IMS horrors. The tell tale sign is the clicking/tapping sound that is regularly misdiagnosed as a noisy lifters. Many of the so called "porsche specialists" will tell you just to run heavier oil, but that's just a like brushing the dust under the rug. Until you correctly removed the cancer, you'll continue to have the problem that will progressively get worse until it's too late. A bore score inspection using a bore scope is a pretty standard practice in mechanics. I don't mean to scare the OP, but I think it would be wise to rule out the problem.
