Simply, "I had the vehicle inspected, they found XY&Z, I decided not to buy it." If someone still wants to pursue it that's their choice.

A friend here in CO just bought a 993 from Oregon, had the PPI done at a shop recommended by many here on RL.

The "generic" shop that did the PPI said the "lifters were noisy and need replacing", not knowing much about BMWs with direct injection.

Assuming the shops we use are reputable, this would be somewhat of a results database that Rennlist members could use to avoid a car that another member passed on, and the reason they did not move forward with the purchase.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Just a thought (forgive me if this has been suggested in the past, but I'm new around here).
I'm currently shopping for a 996. As much as I would love to find one locally, more often than not, the deals are found elsewhere.
I see a lot of posts asking for suggested shops to have pre-purchase inspections done. I did so myself.
Ideally, if we have a PPI done, and everything comes up roses, we can negotiate a deal, and move forward with the purchase of the car.
If things don't work out so well, we've paid for the PPI, we pass on the vehicle. and move on. The car however, goes back on the market, and the next buyer comes along to start the process again.
What if we, as a community, shared the results of our negative PPIs, along with the VINs and the reason we passed on the car? Assuming the shops we use are reputable, this would be somewhat of a results database that Rennlist members could use to avoid a car that another member passed on, and the reason they did not move forward with the purchase. It would also provide us with a bit defense against unscrupulous dealers that attempt to hide issues from buyers.
I figure, we're paying for the PPI anyway. If they discover something bad, why not share that info with our community so the next guy doesn't waste his money (or get stuck with a lemon).
Again, just an idea.
I think your idea sucks - I've purchased many more Porsche's than most RL members - I've Probably sold more Porsche's than most RL members and have lots of experience with the PPI process - I'm a private party and the last thing I would want to do is protect a dealer:
#1. Many PPI results can be subjective and many PPI shops do a poor job or not thorough enough.
#2. Many Porsche buyers are complete schmucks and I could see them purposely trying to degrade a seller or their car because they were unhappy with some aspect of the purchase drama
#3. Potential buyers spend $250-$375 for PPI's - Why should this info be public?
#4. Liability issues galore when you start posting Porsche shop & Owners private information on their vehicle and list Vin#'s.
#5. I have seen/heard/experienced mis-information from shops during PPI's - Again a liability issue when you post inaccurate information about a vehicle for sale.
I'd love to hear others chime in on this PPI public idea.
On one side I've seen people share PPIs locally before.
It saved people money.
Usually there is an offer to pay half the cost.
On the other side:
I had an inaccurate PPI on a BMW that I sold.
The "generic" shop that did the PPI said the "lifters were noisy and need replacing", not knowing much about BMWs with direct injection.
The direct injection fuel injectors are well know for being noisy, even brand new ones.
They also misdiagnosed an old (recently repaired) valve cover gasket oil leak as a faulty RMS.
The RMS is not on the side of the engine.
Posting the reason that you personally passed on purchasing a car is a liabilty issue? I'm not talking about bashing a seller or a vehicle.
Simply, "I had the vehicle inspected, they found XY&Z, I decided not to buy it." If someone still wants to pursue it that's their choice.
. . . and believe it or not, there are millions of people who aren't on Rennlist, who will buy with or without their own PPI.
The idea was only for folks here to maybe help each other out.
I understand you're not talking about bashing a seller or a vehicle but in reality, it happens all the time - After you spend some quality time on RL you'll understand
On the Pelican Porsche Forum, they don't even allow comments anymore in the Porsche Cars for sale forum because of the wars that started.
Secondly, I know there are lots of people who purchase w/o PPI, they are the buyers usually looking for a used engine in the for parts sale section
I understand your intention but I just don't think it would be a positive situation - There are lots of people who comment on the Porsche for sale Forum on RL and Moderators are continually warning people about their negative comments
Understood. I suppose there will always be a-holes, especially in a public forum. As nice and helpful as folks seem to be here, it not a "local" club where one would share such information with another club member.
It's a shame.
PPI's when buying out of state are not always a guarantee. A friend here in CO just bought a 993 from Oregon, had the PPI done at a shop recommended by many here on RL. Turns out the seller is buddies with the shop owner and the car was not what the PPI said it was. It had been in an accident, had some respray done, had crappy Monroe shocks put on it that were leaking, the PPI said it was good to go but it was not. Overall it still was a decent low mileage 993, but many things the PPI should have picked up were left out of the report. Buyer beware.
I've been a member on Pelican Porsche forum for 20 years - The stuff people would say about P-Cars for sale and the sellers was pretty unbelievable - I'd say mostly people who perhaps wouldn't pay the asking price, seller wouldn't negotiate, or buyer was just an A-hole and wanted to vent.
Most times when cars on RL have issues in the for sale section, members are on top of it and shout it out...Any disrespect regarding car or sale, Moderators are quick to take care of any none contributing BS.
While I have never posted PPI results, I have shared them with others if I passed on the car. Don't know about liability issues though. Didn't mind sharing to save another potential buyer some cash.
