Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

34 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I spotted a tiny little article in this months Total 911 magazine that might be of interest to anyone considering an engine build on their 996. The article at the foot of page 10 suggests that Porsche have reduced the price of short motors by almost 50% They are now available, according to the article, for 3,500 direct from Porsche. At first glance this looks like a sea change in not only the cost of a rebuild but also a welcome boost for the future values of 996 cars as the spectre of failed engines making the car itself valueless is significantly lessened. Thought it was a nice bit of news for 996 owners.

$4,500 US, does that include pistons & heads?

POST 3Original post

Ah, that would just be $4600. That's great news. Now if they would just reduce all their other parts by that much, I'd be even happier.

POST 4Original post

Short block would include entire lower assembly (pistons, rods, crankshaft, etc), but not heads, waterpump, sensors... Also, is that for 2.5l, 2.7l, 3.2l, 3.4l, 3.6l? I'm guessing it is for one of the smaller engines.

POST 5Original post

I wonder if this route would be cheaper if your engine literally blew up (crankshaft, block, pistons, rods, camshafts, head, valves....). I have no heads and this is all that's left of my engine. White box has the intake manifold.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 15285314

Without usable heads, it would likely be cheaper to purchase a longblock.

POST 7Original post

I wonder with this price reduction if we will see a continuation of 996 paranoia. Sales ads may soon read like this: IMS, RMS, and AOS done, car comes with new short block just in case...

POST 8Original post

A pleasant surprise. That's good to know. Mike

Quotes source post: 15285804

And it's in the "frunk" for when you need it!

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 15286522

Should probably add to ad -> "And it's a cable frunk release, so you're not stranded without a short block if the battery dies".

POST 11Original post

At that price you could buy a roller and two NEW short blocks for 16k and be SET !!!!

POST 12Original post

Has me thinking about looking for another roller project.

POST 13Original post

But have any of you found anyone legitimate selling engines at this new price? Where?

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 15285314

JYO: Is that the engine out of the BUS!?

POST 15Original post

Does anyone know the price of a long block from the Fatherland?

POST 16Original post

What happened to the heads? In any event, there are used heads available from engines with bottom end failures.

POST 17Original post

indeed it is. been engine-less for a year. too damn expensive

I have the same question

POST 19Original post

Yep, good question...

POST 21Original post

Complete engine and components....wowie zowie

POST 22Original post

That short block is the same price (give or take a dollar or two) since I looked into replacing my engine last summer/fall. It is a couple of thousand dollars more than the suggested new low price referenced above in the first post.

POST 23Original post

Uh - what kind of IMS bearing is in them? (runs, and ducks for cover)

POST 25Original post

Most probably it is a starting from price for the 2.5 block. For UK customers do not forget to add also 20-21% VAT, as most probably it is listed as without VAT. I am sure in the US Porsche AG would use a slightly different price setting in $. Curious for more details about the article as it is lacking a lot of important information. On the other hand if prices would come down indeed 50% it would be a positive evolution!

POST 26Original post

To compare apples with apples. The most recent price reference in the UK for the short block I found on the Porsche Club GB forum and is dated 06.12.2018 So this makes consumer price incl VAT of around 5400 and 5700 or to compare in USD $7100 and $7500 Considering currency ecxhange rate (dis)advantages pretty in line with what has been advertised here already. Last reference I got here in mainland Europe for a 3.6 short block is € 8500 +VAT (around $ 10k )

DB: Yeah I looked this up after reading this thread. That is pricey for complete engine and the short isn't at the level talked about above. In addition, these would still have some of the 428 failure modes built in, although they have the larger single row IMSB so there is that.

POST 28Original post

$47,017.49? That is two or three times what these cars sell for now days?? And twice waht a Flat Six big bore engine sells for! Do you think they have ever sold one of these complete engines at this price?

POST 29Original post

Whats the US price then? I dont mean how to convert pounds to dollars, but rather, is there any link where a US-based person can click to see the price? Does anyone have the article they can share? If thats really the price, I wonder if folks might want to buy one and hold it, but I assume the core charge would be too high.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 15309250

the only way to be sure is to call a dealer in your area and ask the parts dept.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 15309250

As coop said, call your local dealer. Here in Hawaii the core charge was $4k but others have stated $2-$2.5K

POST 32Original post

The dealers around here are very high on price for regular parts. Ill try them though.

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 15309757

Or find someone that's close to another more reasonable dealer. Some have quoted $6-7K for short blocks from Porsche
