Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The exhaust hardware is really rusted on my 996 and when I removed the nuts on the catalytic converters the studs just sheared off (all 6 of them). Despite heat / Kroil etc. Anyone have a good way to remove the studs? I plan to replace with bolts but first I need to get these 6 broken studs out. I have a hydraulic press but its awkward to get the assembly in the right place to press them out. Grind off the 'Rivet' side and drill out the remainder?

POST 2Original post

Dremel...then hammer and pry them off. Replace with new ones. Or grind off the heads on the studs, punch them out and replace with SS bolts and nuts.

POST 3Original post

On my 2000 I was able to punch them out by putting the pipe in a vise and using a hammer and punch. The "rivet" is just a flange, and they were pressed in with the flange as a stop. It is an interference fit, the studs had splines to prevent rotation. I just replaced them with stainless bolts, nuts and washers.
