I've done nothing but drive the wheels off the thing, basic maintenance and replaced consumables for the last couple of years.
Leading evidence: 'Replace consumables' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'pete and gonzo are the same way' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean coffee and snot of my keyboard' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Presumably, the OG Good Week thread was locked to teach us a lesson, and creating a derivative thread ran afoul of the prescribed punishment protocol.

He only disclosed to the buyer that the IMS was replaced, not that it was replaced with a cheap piece of crap bearing that the manufacturer said would not work for this application.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I thought I'd kick off this weekend's first annual End Intermediate Shaft Bearing Discrimination weekend with one of the many images circulating the internet.
This poor 996, based on its personalized plate ("kaput"?), has no doubt experienced IMS bearing failure...so it knows all too well the stigma of IMSBD.
If you or a loved one has been made to feel like a bottom-feeder, a poseur, a sham...or even (gasp) a 944 owner...you're not alone. Post up your 996's anti-IMSBD message and proudly declare that you, too, will no longer be ashamed. Shrug off the chains of IMSBD!

You know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged—but you look at the IMSB deal, the thing that really bothers me—it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are (IMSB is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right—who would have thought?), but when you look at what's going on with the 29 modes of failure—now it used to be 28, now it’s 29—but when it was 28 and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years—but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed the IMSB...,
I hope this is a joke.................................................................... ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ......................
I'll tell you, the thing about the IMSB - and you probably didn't know this - is that it's actually a pretty good thing. The press won't tell you that because they're dishonest, but it's true - that I can tell you. Believe me, it's a good thing. Listen to me, I got a call the other day from a TRUbro owner - great guy, I've known him for years, by the way - and he says "Listen, the real issue here is the way it's implemented." So true, you can believe that. I didn't believe it at first because of all the reporting out there saying "OHH these things are sooo bad!" So I said to my friend - who's truly an inspiring guy (great developer, by the way - his buildings are FANTASTIC). So I said to him "ya know, what if we were to create a Rennlist thread" - you know the site, right? Great site, that I can tell you. Lots of fine Porsches - the best Porsches money can buy, I might add. And so I said to him "what if we create a thread & title it the IMSBD awareness thread, ya know?" And so he says he's interested - not surprising by the way because he's a really talented guy, very sharp might I add. And so anyway, we're looking at this issue, which the fake news has done HARRRABLE job reporting - which they usually do by the way - and so an honest thread is needed, am I right? And so that's how it went, I can promise you that.

Look. For the last time. There is a perfectly reasonable solution to the IMSB. 100% guaranteed to make sure it never harms your engine.
1. Remove IMSB.
2. Send to gold plater.
3. Put it on your desk.
Will absolutely 100% never threaten your engine again.
Watch out for your toes though!
Take it easy on the Canadian. Oh, look, now he's started apologizing. Great.
I think I remember enough Canadian to fix this...
*cough*
Hey, bud, pull up those track pants, jump into your runners, and go get yourself a double double at Tim Horton's and a 2-4 of Molson.
If that wasn't clear, I can shout it at you. After all, I'm a highly-trained, multi-lingual American.
I haven't seen my toes in years. Ever since the day at the sausage mill. Thanks for bringing that up all over again.

Didn’t Schnell have some alt threads somewhere? I hate that we got the main thread locked but I agree it was probably justified. So, in the meantime, can anyone identify this IMSB?
photo747.jpg
I think we all ignored your first comment in hopes you'd knock it off, kinda glad I didn't get to see the second one. If Hacker had to edit it out though, I think it's safe to say: Uncool dude. Uncool.
And I think you can guess how I feel about having to take KK's side
It wasn;t that bad. You'll probably get a vacation but the little twerp does get under ones skin. But he's garnered more of our words than he deserves. So back to our regularly scheduled programming.
I searched under Schnell’s threads. This one looked as good as any so I just grabbed it as opposed to looking further. Besides, beings that the other one was started by Cuda, it just doesn’t have the same panache to it.
Definitely the wrong week to not enjoy the antics around here anyway.
Since it is a possibly that the original thread may finally be at an end, it seems somehow fitting that your last post in it was 1999...
They will open it back up. It's a staple of this forum and in this case it did it's job. It got a blow up out of real threads into the off-topic dumping ground.
Heavy is the head...
The number of posts and retorts I sat on waiting on Schnelly to catch up and retake it was getting silly. Not sure if he is just a pansy or criminally smart....
Don't say that.
Then we'll have to deal with his inflated ego.....oh ....wait...
Idk, it got pretty intense. And I didn't have .02 cents to throw in there. I was just watching from the sidelines with popcorn.!
Well, I guess this is a temporary sanctuary for this.
For those commenting and talking about KK with any degree of seriousness- reconsider. If you cannot tell, the man has a serious mental disorder; most likely Asperger's. And I am not joking or attacking him.
If you saw his posts since he joined, he constantly was missing social ques and trying to relate to people in the most awkward way through "bro, bruh, man" etc. His only obsession was disassembling the car and assembling it over and over again (there is another Asperger's guy on the forum, who does that for a living; and his posts are about the same as KKs). KK is the same way on the Powerstroke forum, posting about his rebuild and disassembling the truck.
The man is sick, and I don't think he can rationally process the effects of his posting or reactions members have to him.
Here are his Powerstroke forum threads.
http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/sea...rchid=43504554
And here is a powerstroke thread to read if you are bored and need drama. It is about 22...or 23 year old body man, who is an MMA fighter by night, and he is Italian but half black, and lives in Canada, and he bought a powerstroke and KK tried to give him advise on how to fix it.
http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/6-4...ease-help.html
I agree that something is broken in him, but as someone with their own suite of problems, I don't agree he should get a pass for it.
I also think comparing him to Jake is a terrible comparison. Jake has done what I have done with some of my issues which is to find a use for it in his life and push forward. Jake also spends much of his public time actually helping people and providing useful and proven information. While there have certainly been notable cases where Jake got away from himself, on the whole it is easy to forgive those given what he has done for the community.
I'm also not sure KK's issues have been life long. When I started to become a regular here he was actually a quite useful and helpful member. He was a bit of an *** towards those that didn't DIY, but otherwise he was a good guy. When I noticed there was a problem was around the time of the infamous "500 mile road trip" thread. From that point on it was a slow motion train wreck that culminated in his ... what... glee? ... in his old car blowing up just so he could try to say "I told you so".
I honestly feel bad for the guy and I do hope he gets some help, but that doesn't mean I have any stomach for putting up with him in the meantime.
I never was around when he had his car. I joined this merry band right as it blew up on the new owner.
And I completely agree. We all got problems, some more than others. but that definately doesn't give him a pass to do what he does and act the way he does.
I mean, 5CHN3LL is a strange bird by all accounts, but even he has standards..........I think.
He certainly does. You'll never see him reference off-color, unpopular ****. It's only the heinous, truly infamous scenes like 2girls1cup that get a mention. A true connoisseur!
Oh and I know there is no way ettil has standards given that she married me
Can you even begin to comprehend what living with me for 23.5 years must be like?
She did get a 911 out of the deal though. A 996, but still...
If any of you know the meaning of Python, Django, ROA, and/or Infoblox, I pity you. Unless you are the jackass that wrote the code I'm working on. Then being the tail of the human centipede is too good for you!
If you don't know what those words mean, then you should feel blessed and simply punch anyone that tries to bring them into your life in the face!
How f'ing long does it take Mark in Baltimore or Pirate Guy to figure out what went on in the GWIT996F?
I'm sure Gretch would have just called KK a name and let things progress nicely....
Here's the million-dollar question: too many comments, too few comments, or utterly worthless comments?
My faves are the ones that explain in great detail the incredibly important include files but don't actually list the names of the sh*t actually IN those files. What I'd LOVE to do is actually instantiate some of that code without a week-long research project. Instead, you just keep opening and reading successive layers of included tripe - like somehow if they hid the REALLY sh*t code seven includes deep, nobody would find it? - all the while discovering that the comments get less and less frequent and less useful, like the chalk line you stop caring about after you've been in the cave for three days and the flashlight's long dead.
I've been angry at many people; I've road-raged. I've done the old-school-pick-the-other-guy-up-by-the-lapels-and-slide-up-a-wall. Once, I regained my senses from the red mist and noticed that I had another guy pinned against the wall with my forearm across his throat and my right fist in the firing position, poised to make it so the wide-eyed dude craps his teeth back out in 2 days. But none of those compare to trying to de-obfuscate some terrible design because your lousy predecessor (or worse! some hired hack or offshore "resource") had some stupid first-year OOP instructor who had a hard-on for nested included libraries.
Also, to those Python people who say "Oh, the indenting is really useful once you get used to it," I hope you get hit by a train.
zero comments. Tons of duplicated rather than inherited code. Lots of "magic" that makes tracing and debugging a Herculean effort. Presentation of a REST interface in a manner that can't be controlled due to more magic to talk to another REST interface rather than a DB like the main framework was designed to work with. Presenting a REST interface that is little different from the REST interface that it talks to on the back end. The cardinal sin of Python is ever present, mixing spaces and tabs. And the number one biggest item of suckage is that due to their really terrible design decisions to use these terrible options/tools rather than do something intelligent, we can't get away from fvcking Infoblox!!!!
Seriously. They SUCK! I horked all of Prod a few months ago because I had the audacity to (accidentally) run 8 (yes, 8) simultaneous actions against Infoblox and it brought the whole grid down to the point that we couldn't get in and reboot it. Support's response? Don't send so many requests
And yeah fvck Python and it's white space
Instead of griping about the code, just pay someone on Fiverr $50 to rewrite it and be done.
I’m not sure if Jake will ever talk to me again after this sh!tstorm. I knew I was going out on a limb when I started that thread here instead of classifieds where it could be tightly moderated. But it just seemed like a fun concept.
You know what's faster but less reliable and much more expensive than a 3.8L FSI m96? Retrofitting a 3.8L crate m97 into a 996 for 30-35k.
I tell ya, being somewhat competent can be a blessing and a curse.

Lol!
As for closing the thread, I realized it had a whole lot to do with a paid vendor that didn’t ask for me to create drama on their behalf. It wasn’t very cool on my part.
Well, windbags pulling the "LS EVERYTHING" card is incredibly rude when a guy is looking to find a buyer in a personal sale thread. It's not exactly an easy thing to handle for an OP. Eh well, at least we're not living under the delusion that a $25k LS swap costs $10k. <<<redacted>>>
I started a Gooder Week thread. Gonna lockify this one so we have it for the NEXT time KK comes along and screws up the sandbox for everyone.
*edit* *waves hands* No I didn't. No other thread existed. *waves hands*
Dunno. I keep seeing the shadow of the banhammer looming over this forum, so I'm endeavoring - for a while longer, at least - to avoid getting whacked.
Big brother is definitely watching. Presumably, the OG Good Week thread was locked to teach us a lesson, and creating a derivative thread ran afoul of the prescribed punishment protocol. This whole "paying to get hamhandled" thing gives me an idea of what life as a Scientologist must be like...
I'm not sure - the Ministry of Truth and Ministry of Information removed some of the offending comment. Actually understanding what happened so you can know to avoid it in the future makes it impossible to punish people for imaginary transgressions, so you need to get rid of that stuff. Plus, the Internet needs to stay safe and wholesome, like Family Home Evening at Warren Jeffs' place.
Well The Ministry of Love should lay off the fun threads a little bit. They are a shred of light during the hell hole of the workday. Perhaps though I should just work more instead of offending the PC police on a car forum on the interwebs.... What's next though? Do we need a safe space thread for the fragile and easily offended? Should this thread be filled with puppies and flowers and annual engine rebuilding timelines?
Oh, uh, *ahem*
HEY GUYS I HAVE AN ISMB BEARING - I STARTED THE CAR TODAY AND A NOISE CAME OUT NOT SURE I HEARD THIS IMBS IS BAD NEWS
*cough* * I'm stalling them! Quick! Out the back door!*
SO I TOOK THE CAR APART AND FOUND THIS IS IT BAD THANKS DOCTOR STRANGE LOVE
Locking the Good Week thread for days over some harmless pixels on the monitor, is not at all unlike closing a Del Taco location because someone farted in the dining area.
WTF are you people up to in my absense? I can't even bury my Uncle with out you people creating and locking threads?
On a brighter note, as of tomorrow I will have 2 free and clear Porsche titles
"I'm not 100% sure what the heck is going on around here but for now, and until the mods get a chance to sort things out - this thread is on temporary hiatus."
The kids on the short bus with foreheads that comprise 60% of their face, figured out much faster that windows licked repeatedly taste like yesterday's saliva.
But I think what's really bothering me more than anything, is that someone seemingly stole from someone else by falsely representing something that they were selling. There are three kinds of thieves. 1. The predator. This is the guy that points a gun at your face and demands your money. 2. The opportunist. This is the guy that walks by a pickup truck and sees a Skillsaw, a laser level and a tool belt. He looks both ways, and then grabs the items and scoots off with them. 3. The conman. This is the guy that will look you square in the eyes and lie to you, either outright or by omission to achieve what he wants, which is to extract the money from your pocket. This is the guy that talks 80 year old widows into investing their life savings in his new widgets, which never make production. He's the guy that tells you that he replaced the timing chain, but doesn't tell you that he used a bicycle chain to do it with... or a fidget spinner bearing for an IMSB.
All three are despicable creatures, but at least the first one is honest about his intentions. The second one doesn't have to lie to reach his goal. The third one must lie.
So, a fart in the dining area is really a non-event that would've dissipated after a few more posts without escalation anyway.
Since the Good Week Blah, Blah, Blah thread was locked, didn't get a chance to respond to Schnelly.
Yep, all four corners, all new shoes. Decided to try a different tire, 285/30ZR-18 Sumitomo HTR Z III XL.
Only driven about 150 miles or so on them since yesterday, but am liking them so far. My old tires were Dunlop Durezza Star Specs. They were great at first, but rapidly went downhill.
A friend of mine here on RL crashed an SRF years back, lost both his legs. He now tracks a hand-controlled tip 996. His story is amazing.
To clarify, only 7 are P cars. The rest are a mish-mash.
Yeah, been eyeing a Panny for awhile. Really like the new model, but can't stomach the price. A 928 with a Pasha interior would be a good excuse to expand the stable too.
Not sure about having to deal with all the extra shoes and breaks though.
Probably should get a garage first....
Fvck it, I'll just have another kid. If it's a girl, Porsche. If it's a boy, Cayman seems like a cool name.
Back in Albuquerque again for my kid's wrestling tournament. 3rd year in a row. He's a senior, so this is the last. Heads up, probably will be drinking Saturday night.
Oh, and for the 996 related topic, my Chevy Malibu LTZ has a command center so user friendly that I can't get the radio to turn on. Makes me miss the simplicity of the 996 where you don't need a computer programming degree to listen to the damn radio.
1. I was on the wresting team in high school, and got my varsity letter in college. AAA school, so no big accomplishment. Got my a$$ whupped by Ohio State.
2. Why would we think that you will be doing anything other than drinking on Sat.???
3. Borrowed a friend's BMW recently with it's "I Stupid" infotainment control. Morons at BMW. Why not just "on" "off" and "channel" buttons?
4. Albuquerque reeks. My brother lives in Santa Fe. Been to ALBQ many times. Only good things are the sopapillas and the petroglyph park to the west, and the bar at the top of the peak to the east (and the tram ride up).
Spoken like someone who has never had the misfortune of owning a BMW with iDrive. The E70 X5 (diesel) I purchased when the diesels were released in 2010 had the latest "update" to this near-criminally-bad system. I miss the 425 lb-ft of torque that thing would grunt out (which, face it, when you're hauling 3 tons of SUV up a mountain, you're gonna want) - but that infotainment system was a giant, steaming turd.
iDrive neatly combines the rotary telephone experience you may look back on with wistful fondness with the excitement of "Whack-a-mole!" when it comes time to actually commit a character. *turn* *turn* *turn* WHAM! "Sweet! First letter is done. Now for the 'A.'" *turn* *turn* *turn* WHAM!
Frick if I know. Some Garbage Talk glitch.
I loved the I-drive on my 2011 and 2014. The entire car seemed like an extension of my body. It was so natural that I would forget I was even driving it. So I got bored and moved onto vehicles with more character.
Personally owned, no. My brother in law has had multiple iterations of the X5 and a few 5 series loaners that i have the chance to play with. It's annoying, but I got used to it after a while. I will agree, it's not end user intuitive at all.
It was more aimed at the good attorney. its a Chevy. how bad can it really be?
It appears the moderators are flexing their brute strength and going to keep the GWITF thread closed permanently. They have not given any reason nor explained what they hope to accomplish. But apparently they’ve discussed it among themselves and feel like the world will be a better place without it. It’s a shame after all of that hard work and effort to build it up to almost 750k views but WTFever.
So is this the new off topic home until it gets closed?
I gave up when a non-member posted a bunch of stuff for sale in the 996 forum, basically thumbed his nose when some members called him out about it, and zilch happened from the mods. I let my membership expire after that one.
If they had given me a two week vacation, I would have been fine with it. I didn’t deserve it and have only received one warning out of 4000+ posts but I still would have been fine. But to permanently close a thread with no explanation, no reason, and something accomplishes NOTHING since we simply move he conversation is total BS. The only thing dumber than that is the fact that I give a ****. Haha!

No. I closed the thread and had it deleted. As a business owner I’m pretty sensitive towards controlling my message. So while I felt like I defended FSI and their engine well, I realized it wasn’t my place to create that much drama over someone else’s company.

But of course... never mind.
That's the piece I missed, I was following then traveling but I saw the offer and a tire kicker start heating up. But, you did celebrate the quality of Jake's work - I know of him with the same respect in the Type IV community.
I still have some hope that they'll unlock the GWIT996F thread. If not, then so be it. But, that thread has become one of the things that makes Rennlist unique and separates it from other automotive forums. I hear from non-996 types all of the time that they regularly stop by that thread just to check in and get a laugh. It's a pretty lighthearted and friendly thread 99% of the time and when somebody gets out of line, it's basically self-policing. That's exactly what was going on last week when it got locked. Hopefully, the mods will figure that out. If not, nothing will stop anyone from posting, but Rennlist will have lost one thing that makes it one of the best automotive enthusiast forums online.
Nearly three-quarters of a million views and you're going to just ****can that thread?
If I were a Rennlist advertiser, especially a 996 forum sponsor, that would make me so happy. I haven't owned a NA 996 for nearly 3 years, but GWIT996F keeps me coming back in here. I suspect Pete and Gonzo are the same way. I don't spend a lot of time in the 996TT forum and basically no time in the 928, 944 or Cayenne forums even though I have each of those cars in my garage.
Well Said. I'm on another forum for my LR and I spend way more time putzing around on here than over there.
My bad.....thought I had the right sequence..
KCA nailed it. I'm a member of a few forums for my other cars, trucks, motorcycles, firearms and various hobbies. Why? Because of access to the search function. I hang-out at exactly none of them. If it's page clicks and posts that determines forum value and advertiser costs, shutting down a thread that generates as many views and posts as it did when a simple moderator post in the thread warning the user of their sin and a pm with a threat of being banned would've immediately remedied the perceived issue, which was really pretty minor. That would've been the most reasonable approach to deal with the infraction. And since that thread generates interest among so many members across a wide spectrum of P-car model owners, a byproduct of that is that those same members that visit the site because of that thread, also then scan new posts elsewhere on the site and contribute to them, which further enriches the site. And let's face it, the 996 has been out of production for well over a decade. 90% of all questions have answers that can be found with the search function. Internet forums need members far more than individuals need forums. A symbiotic relationship, but only half of the equation relies on it for income.
But, hey... mod God syndrome. It is what it is.
Got a prognosis from the doc...., it's advanced to full blown aids and a hydrolocked motor. She's done for, like a old dried up hoor.
Chat threads like that are fun, and an easy way to meet people. And lets face it, as long as you're a somewhat close normal person, those threads are always fun. It's the asshats that ruin it for everyone. Mods don't particularly care for them, because they know those threads are home to people that don't walk around life with a smoldering hot iron rod up their asses..., not that they do or anything...., right....?
Maybe we should just start a thread called "Absolutely 100% Technical Information" and so long as we end every statement with "Or, of course, it could be the IMS." It will be one of those good faith things where the mods can't fault us by the rule book
Did the mfn overlords close the 1000 thread now?
Here was my last irrelevant post to it just so I didn’t type in vain.
Lucky! I got none in my ‘99.
And the more modern a car is the more driving it does for you. My ‘14 BMW 535 m-sport was a great car. Quick, intuitive, easy to drive. And absolutely boring as hell. My ‘99 996 on the other hand, with windows down and sunroof open, puts me 100% connected to the road and the world around me. And that makes me smile every single time.
I went to test drive a Porsche 996 this weekend. Seller mentioned the IMS solution was recently installed as well as a new AOS, water pump, plugs, and belt. However, I asked the seller if the snorkel had been covered when it was washed or if it had ever been parked on a incline. The seller couldn't confirm either; therefore, I rolled my eyes, dusted my sandals off, spit on the ground, and walked away.
I’m at the bank and they are offering me overlord protection. I’m starting to think it’s worth the cost at any price.
And I’m f’n sick apostrophe’s being f’d up in the Garbage Talk app’!
Dont use an apostrophes. Youre welcome. Isnt this a great fix. Were intelligent enough to understand regardless. Id suggest another fix, but cant think of one.
I'll have to put a crush clamp over the end so it doesn't shoot off...., prematurely.
My snorkel is still a virgin, thus why I ordered a chastity snorkel cover.
Garbage Talk IOS (GT) app is f’n up apostrophe’s. Every time I type one, it’s coming up with a bunch of funky symbols when using a web viewer. If you just use GT, then it looks normal to you.
Did I mention Christmas pumpkins? They kind of look like multicolored IMS’s to me.
And I guess we are supposed to forget that there is an RL’er who absolutely screwed another RL’er and let bygones be bygones, despite there being no signs of remorse. OK, so be it. I sure as heck won’t be doing any business with him but I guess he has a right to exist.
Entertainment will still be had, possibly in here, but, that's up for debate. We should probably keep to the technicalities that this thread is based around, IMSB.
I for one think it's a hoax by Big Box Jake Raby to get all of our money for a "solution", well you know who else had a final solution? Hitler. Coincidence? I'll let you be the judge.
My land rover ticks when hot, is that a moving cylinder liner or the IMSB?
To maintain my diplomatic status and in an effort to boost diplomatic relations, I have no comment to be made at this time.
Hacker Porsche said we were being cliqueish. Kk screws another RL’er, shows up a year later with no remorse, and we are expected to show him love? For hating high school Hacker is doing a great job of playing the clueless overbearing authority figure that I certainly despised from those days.
How dare us enjoy talking to each other..., didn't realize that was cliqueish, as much as it is like model owners bantering and having fun while still discussing the technicalities that were apparently never present?
How did he screw someone over by the way? Backstory?
Long story short,
Allegedly, The Screwer took the IMSB out and replaced it with a bearing that the manufacturer told him wasn't suitable. Threads were made, documenting the whole process. Car was sold to a chap in NJ. IMSB failed. Screwer came on forum and told everyone the IMSB failed. I remember that . The new owner (Screwed for short) is a member of the forum and started a thread as well saying he was the one that bought the Screwers car and now faced with the prospect of buying a new engine. The Screwer started deleting, threads, etc. Names were called, arguments between attorneys and internet attorneys ensued, and the Screwer disappeared for a year plus. He just returned.
But this is all allegedly.....
dgi: Very accurate Cliff's Notes version. I have no idea how that thread never got deep sixed. I guess nobody whined loud enough to the Forum Cops. However, of course, it could have been the IMS! Wait it really was the IMS. Careful boys the the Hall Monitors are probably still watching for to make sure no-one steps out of line(You step out of line, the man come and take you away. courtesy Buffalo Springfield) and toss another one to the "corn field"
As a Auto technician, I run on 3 main principles.
1. Always do the right thing.
2. Keep it Simple Stupid
3. C.Y.A - Cover Your A**
I'm just covering my a**...
Not kidding, still pretty new around here and learning all the drama. So far I only know of Johnny Irish and PeePeeEye.
So the Screwer is allegedly has a scummy moral compass as well as defective cognitive abilities, probably got butt hurt for being called out on both accounts, and has since returned to reamplify his terrible qualities and ruin the Rennlist experience for the rest of us? Do I have it somewhat right?
Basically yes. He decided he could swap the IMS less expensively by creating his own “kit”. He only disclosed to the buyer that the IMS was replaced, not that it was replaced with a cheap piece of crap bearing that the manufacturer said would not work for this application. So when the bearing went out and the engine blew, he came back on to RL and started deleting all evidence of what he had done. Total pond scum.
Alright boys....so we don't get this thread deep sixed as well, do you think I should replace the IMSB on my land rover as well. its got 108k on the original....wait, does it even have an IMSB?
Suppose there's scum in every car sector, shame that he had to publicize his scumminess and ultimately **** someone else over full knowing what would happen. Karma is real, and waits for opportune moments however, only a matter of time.
We're a clique apparently, which is frowned upon. Now, please tell me about your IMSB woes to get back on topic!
You should probably swap it out for the solution, and while you're in there it would be a really good idea to change the clutch, AOS, and RMS. Since it's an LR, I expect you to be in the ballpark of about $9,500 in repairs.
While your at it, drop the engine and completely detail it, especially if you drove it beyond your driveway or in the rain,
BTW...IMSB...whew almost forgot!
A good friend just bought a 121k mi 2004 996 C4S without PPI.
Seller had huge stack of service records, one INDY serviced the car for last 10 years. He spoke with owner of the shop, reviewed history, drove the car home to LA from Vegas.
Gambler...
51 modes of failure and he is not afraid.
He is one of the 95% of P car owners that have never heard of RL and is sometimes, I think better off. He missed the IMSB hype but also misses the humor and fun we have!
WTF happened? I'm a bit behind in time here (sure is cold today
) and just poured A CUP O JOE and you all been miss behaving without me...
At least it wasn't me this time!
Nope, Didn't get one on my C4S either.
It breaks, it breaks. I'll drink heavily that night and start planning the rebuild the next morning.
And I got a tech school buddy that's a tech for Porsche so at least I would have that going for me.
In the mean time, I enjoy every minute I drive it, even the ones stuck in traffic with clueless NJ soccer moms behind me texting while sitting in their Yukon XL's with the high-beams on.
Pretty much how I thought of it. Did a pretty basic inspection in a parking lot, didn't exactly have a plethora of service documents, but enough to see that they took care of issues when they popped up and kept up on regular maintenance.
It's always a blast to drive, good fun in a car. Surely it will implode any day now, but that's okay, we know what we signed up for.

Isn't that the truth? The coward that was apparently bullied, became the cowardly bully. There was no 'clique.' Everyone was welcome there, even losers like me. Once again... Mod God Syndrome. At the very least, an unapologetic brazen act of utter douchebaggery on public display. Certainly nothing to be proud of.
I bought my 996 cab with zero service records and no real ppi from a friend that owns a used car lot. It was a trade-in. I took it out and abused it for about 30 minutes, came back in and left a deposit, and picked it up later that week. I've done nothing but drive the wheels off the thing, basic maintenance and replaced consumables for the last couple of years. It has been as fun as it has been reliable. I bought my 996 turbo coupe without a ppi or lot of records, and I have zero regrets on that purchase either. These cars are far more durable than a glance through the forums would indicate. Nobody ever starts a thread along the lines of "Went out to start the car today and noticed that it was running great, as usual."
We are still judging you about keeping the pumpkins though.......
btw, has anyone checked in on SCHN3LL, I would imagine he's somewhere performing Seppuku...
All of the regulars are done. Deleting the thread was a total bish ash punk move on Hackers part. So there are some really valuable members that we won’t be seeing much of for the foreseeable future.
Someone posted that in the technical forum? My goodness! Isn't that grounds for a thread lock, a verbal thrashing, some random off-topic grumbling of how they were treated poorly in their youth, and their astonishment and dismay that human nature continues into adulthood? Oh, the HORROR!
Which is ridiculous, because pretty much any forum I've been a part of, has had individual chat threads based on models and not Universal $hit stain that is OT.
Anywho, agreed that it's not a clique, hell I've only been here a couple months and jumped right in. Granted I had to go through that ridiculous "initiation ritual", but it wasn't really THAAAATTTT bad.... (*cough*)
How dare you ignore the aftermarket parts gurus selling you good new parts to replace your yet to fail but likely will fail so start replacing parts now! Dont for get the oil. Mobil One is ___________ not so good.
Anybody else notice that since the GWITF thread got sent to the abyss, your post count dropped? Well darn! Guess I gotta stop posting in threads that will end up in the trash pile.
I'm sure it's an irritant that a ridiculous time suck like the royally stupid GW thread had accumulated far more views and replies than any of the more carefully "curated" content.
As far as getting fingered as cliquish or an elitist: the only clique I know of that I contributed to was dedicated to "outing" someone who recently reappeared after burning a 996 buyer and subsequently trying to scrub the details of that particular car from this forum.
I guess in proper 2017 political style, all you have to say is "Nope, wasn't me!" and you get a pass.
ummmmm.....shhhhhh...don't say anything..."they" might not notice us in here for awhile...don't draw attention
ohh..and IMSB...do I have to say anything else?
I'm thinking a career change is in order. How many puppies must I stomp, kittens must I light on fire, and how many unresolved psychological issues from my victimized youth must I carry into adulthood to become an unhinged mod that kills 4 year old threads? It seems like a pretty good gig. If I have to, I'll take my magnifying glass to some ants or yank the wings off of some butterflies for some additional web cred. Being a good mod is a thankless job, but being an unhinged mod on a power trip seems like it would be... intoxicating. Anyway, I'm on my way to the local animal shelter now.
Just because there is no proof of it doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Take my bachelor party for instance.......It happened
and thank god there's no proof.
I also prefer snowflake as opposed to loser. thanks.
IMSB btw.....
And just to be clear, I think it would be a bad idea to start a "Good Week' thread at a competing site. I doubt they'd appreciate the uptick in traffic. I most certainly would never recommend that kind of behavior in an attempt to remedy a situation that didn't need to become a situation in the first place. And as an aside, I love it when I order my steak medium rare and it comes out well done. I'm also happy that I'm a paid member here, and I'm looking forward to renewing it when it expires.
I went out this morning to exercise my IMSB...errr...drive my car and attend meeting and run errands. And ya know what happened? Nothing. Ran great, pulled up through the gears like a champion, stopped on a dime, nothing fell off, and that throaty flat six music is intoxicating. So my IMSB is just great (and so is the car!). IMSB Forever!! Guess you could say "I kicked off the IMSB weekend early"
Got in the 996 yesterday morning because the P!g was out of fuel and I didn't want to go to the gas station.
996 was empty too
Damn IMSB is nothing but problems!!!
I have found that if the gas gauge low fuel indicator light is on, you can still run 150 miles or so. So I say just ignore that crap and get on with it. Low fuel...what a joke. Just so the big oil companies can make more money I say. Sorry...edited to add IMSB...IMSB....IMSB there that should do it.
It's way better for your car to run through the stuff at the bottom of the tank anyway.
The octane gets concentrated in the sludge at the bottom...when that mess gets sucked through your injectors, the car takes off
like a rocket!
P!g was my laziness. 996 and e90 were hers.
Dude! Why do you "drive" a Porsche if you don't know how to use the skinny peddle??
Being a diesel with a 26g tank, the P!g ranges between 70-120mi left when the light comes on. The 996 is usually around 30 when the light comes on...
I was joking and hoping you would get stranded somewhere taking my advice LOL. I never see the low fuel light cuz I fill up at half a tank. i do know that around town I get 14-15 mpg, so I know what the little pedal is for. So I figure at that, and about 2 gallons left when the low fuel lights up, I would have about 30 miles to make my choice.
Cause it looks like a festively plump 911.
That almost happened a few weeks ago while I was down in South GA. We were out in the middle of nowhere around the swamp in a POS Nissan rental. The light comes on and I initially think nothing of it as the Cayenne has conditioned that to be more of an informational item rather than something to be concerned with. Then it dawned on me and noticed we had 20mi left. Had under 10mi left when we found a gas station
That damn road just kept going with a whole lot of nothing on either side!
I hate going to the gas station so I put it off as long as possible. Best was in my Escape where the engine died with just enough momentum left to roll up to the pump
Almost did that in the P!g, but that would have been a very bad day since it's HPFP does not like going dry...
Especially right now when it's colder than a witches titty (location depending).
If you wanna cry, run it dry. Applies to quite a bit in life. Lube responsibly friends.
Hey Folks,
I hope the mods don't delete my post. Last week I posted here and then it was removed shortly thereafter. Maybe because I didn't use the word "IMSB"?
Ok, so maybe I should use a sentence with that word in it. Here it goes...
Well, this car has fallen into my lap for consideration. 1993 C4. Owned by a friend of the family. I believe it is a one-owner with 80K miles. She wants $6500 for it. Seems like a good deal, but I'm not sure since I haven't had a chance to research the value on it or even look at it in person. It's obvious from the picture, the owner damaged the lower fender. Wonder what the cost of repair of that piece would be? Since Schnelly owns one of these, I wonder what his thoughts would be on this machine.
(mod deletion prevention sentence)
If I owned it, I would sure miss the nervousness of knowing that it doesn't have a IMSB failure problems or the other 29ish modes of failure. I'll would also miss the fact that I could be left stranded on the side of the road.
B3: Bumble Bee color! Much safer than "Arrest Me Red". Corvettes are fun. Not 911 fun but fun in different ways. True they don't have IMSBs so that is a plus. Always sounds like 5CHN3LL likes his so hopefully he will chime in.
BTW: IMSB...
If you fix the lower panels, odds are you will *not* experience IMSB failure.
I'm only familiar with ZR-1 pricing but on its face it ̶s̶e̶a̶m̶s̶ seems like a good deal.
hahaha... yea, I'm not giving up my hopes for another 996, but when something like this comes your way, it's hard to pass it up especially if the owner is willing to knock off a little more. Seems like $6500 is pretty good deal. Most of the C4 with this amount of miles are going for more than $10,000 in my area. Oh the pressure!!!!!!
Give it a good drive. If you enjoy it, buy it & clean it up a bit (you would enjoy it). Then sell for a few more $$ than you paid & keep marching towards another 996. OR just drive the vette & enjoy it, hard to lose.
You can read my mind... You nailed it!!! My plan would be to repair the body damage and get it tuned up and mechanics working properly and then flip it for a profit. She sent me more pictures and the flip-up headlights stay up regardless if they're on or off.
Too much Viagra???
Makes me wonder if the headlight motors are frozen up? Seems like I remember a Velocity show about older Corvettes and that the flip-up motors were prone to freeze up on these cars. My "path of righteousness" would be to ultimately put the profits for a 996 coupe. Looking at the current values, -100K miles C4 are grabbing around $10K, but I don't have a clue about these cars and so I'm hoping Schnelly can help me with some advice. But I haven't bought it yet. I'm waiting to here some answers about the mechanicals. If everything checks out, I'll go over and test drive it.
Does anyone know if that low fender panel is fiberglass like the rest of the body? Wonder what it will cost to repair and repaint?
Almost forgot... Long live the IMSB!!!
Much like the 996, you have to keep the hidden costs in mind.
Gold chains.
Polyester shirts missing the top 5 buttons.
Chest hair Rogain.
2 gallons of lard to grease your hair and "awesome" 70s stash.
B3,
Is it an auto or a 6spd? Either way, its a good car with relatively low miles for the year, in a desirable color, and with the glass top option. A 93' is an LT1 (was the LT4 available in 93'?) car, which is better than the tuned port cars with the horsepower robbing long intake runners on the slightly earlier ones. The lower fender panel, just like all body panels on that car is fiberglass. I THINK they made that lower fender from 91' to 93' or 94,' but don't quote me on it, because I could easily be wrong. It has been many years since I had my C4s. The 95' & 96' model lower (shark gill) fenders were the best looking (just my opinion) of the 91' to 96' C4s, and is an easy update to do. The broken piece between the door and the rear fender well on the beltline is also an easy fix. Be patient and you'll find the pieces in the same color so you can avoid painting. Also, the bolster on the driver's side will be the first piece of that interior to show wear. New leather skins aren't cheap, especially if it's the sports seats. The air actuated lumbar tends to go out on those, as well. Also, if both headlights aren't working, it might be an indicator that the problem isn't with the individual headlight motors. One will typically go, but not both simultaneously. There's also a manual **** that you can access when the hood is up.
Now for the bad part. The C4 isn't a highly desirable Corvette. I like them, but because LSx powered C5's are at the 10k+ level and sometimes below, finding a buyer might not be easy. I wouldn't pay over 5k for that car with the issues that I can see... perhaps a little less, but I don't buy any vehicles that aren't a great deal. Maybe your market is different there, but you have to leave room for repairs that you know about, as well as surprises, and room for a little profit. Otherwise, what's the point of spending time sourcing parts, working on it, and then dealing with buyers for it on the other end?
But if you just want a project car that's fun to rip around in and do donuts when nobody is looking, you'll really enjoy that car. C4's are a lot of fun
Hey, thanks man... you been the most help. The owner asked to be DM (instead of phone) in Facebook and so I've sent her many questions that have gone unanswered. The only thing she responded to is sending me some more pictures, but she hasn't any questions in regards to the functionality of the car. Makes me wonder why she is dodging questions like... (What is the VIN number?, everything work properly?, accidents? etc.) From what I can tell, the front headlights won't close, the motorized antenna is parked midway, there is some bolster wear, and of course, the lower driver side fender panel and door trim is damaged. (see pictures)
I personally don't know this woman, but she is a friend of my wife's family. I've spent a little time looking at C4 values in the area and it's not that great. Most have higher mileage and are selling for around $3000 - $5,000. I agree with you, unless I could get it for around $5,000, it may not be a smart investment since there are tons of them for sell on Craigslist. Supply and demand would hurt a quick resale of this car. Plus, I'm not sure if everything is fully functional with the engine. I've asked her several times, but she won't respond. ugh! She'll respond quickly about my family, but if I ask her a simple question like "Are there any problems with the motor?", she doesn't respond. hahaha lawd!
b3, I agree with 808. $6,500, hell, even $5,000 will turn into more as you start to fix it. Put that money in that thermometer, wherever you put it. You're on the path to 996 land, my friend. It's a one-way trip.
Thanks guys! After three days of no responses to my important questions from this lady, I've thrown in the towel and moving on. I really appreciate all of your advice. When you ask someone a simple question like "is everything working properly on the car?" and they respond with "Oh, I bought my house from your wife's uncle", then you have to wonder if the seller is either having mental issues or just trying to avoid the question. I pick the latter.
Maybe I should quit trying to make short cuts and just stay the course towards the 996.
LONG LIVE THE IMSB!!!!!!
I ended up selling the car to a homeless man under a bridge for $20 and half of his ham sandwich. A dry IMSB is nothing to mess with. Glad that bullet has been dodged!
This happens more often than you'd think - must be crappy domestic build quality. My '96 only has two pedals, but the one they forgot is the clutch. If it had come without an accelerator or brake pedal, things REALLY would have been fouled up...
WOW! You made out like a fat rat! Great Job. Was there mustard on the hammy? Speaking of rats I miss Gonzo...kinda...he was invaluable for his knowledge of vermin.
I wanted to introduce the new entertainment activity that will be featured during the next RennRun. I've scouted a similar spot in the mountains South of Vegas. 1 mile long zip-line between two peaks and 780 foot drop from the middle.
