Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Disconnect the battery before you remove the cluster so you don't short anything.

(or some other bad thing happening...which I believe we all want to avoid) If anyone has another forum entry/link, pics, or even step-by-step verbiage that describes changing the dial faces (and addresses concerns/tips for the needles), I'd appreciate it.

I have decided to change the faces on my current instrument cluster from the original black to silver/aluminum (don't hate me) and have a technical question--I need help from some of you Porsche geniuses and adventurous DIYers.

Here's my question: what is the best procedure when removing and replacing the needles from the dials?

Some people also use a fork which works just as good and you wont need to spend money...unless you have no forks in your kitchen.

Specifically, removing them was easy (using a special tool that lifts them straight up), but I notice when I reinstalled the speedo and tach needles, they can easily be moved in any direction (but will remain in the position I leave them).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This may be covered elsewhere, but my room temperature IQ and attention span of a rock (sifting through pages of searches) is having a hard time finding the info I need. I have decided to change the faces on my current instrument cluster from the original black to silver/aluminum (don't hate me) and have a technical question--I need help from some of you Porsche geniuses and adventurous DIYers.
I just happen to have a salvage/spare instrument cluster that I have been practicing on, and it seems disassembling one is relatively easy (but delicate) work. Here's my question: what is the best procedure when removing and replacing the needles from the dials? Specifically, removing them was easy (using a special tool that lifts them straight up), but I notice when I reinstalled the speedo and tach needles, they can easily be moved in any direction (but will remain in the position I leave them). Is this normal? How best to calibrate where the needle should be placed prior to reinstalling the cluster and firing up the car?
As an aside, I've seen boatloads of posts here and elsewhere where people both disconnect and don't disconnect their battery prior to detaching the instrument cluster. For you electronic braniacs, is it overkill to disconnect the battery, or is there a REAL possibility of shorting something out detaching/connecting the three plug in the back of the cluster if the battery is connected? (or some other bad thing happening...which I believe we all want to avoid) If anyone has another forum entry/link, pics, or even step-by-step verbiage that describes changing the dial faces (and addresses concerns/tips for the needles), I'd appreciate it. Thanks and I apologize in advance if I've created a duplicate post. You're all beautiful people.
FYI, my car is a 2001 C2 6-Spd Manual Coupe.
You need a needle removal tool to take the needles off without breaking them. You can buy it at harbor freight or any store that sells auto parts probably. Its pretty much the same tool that shops use to remove trim from interiors. Some people also use a fork which works just as good and you wont need to spend money...unless you have no forks in your kitchen.
As for putting them back on you need to mark the resting positions of each needle BEFORE removing them with some tape on the dials and try to get it as close as possible when pushing them back in. Disconnect the battery before you remove the cluster so you don't short anything. Better safe than sorry.
Also DO NOT touch the LCD screens, even a soft touch can potentially cause the screen to leak and you will end up having to replace them.
