Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I pulled the dipstick, the oil needs changed but no signs of coolant, no smell of fuel.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What do you guys think? I'm looking at a 2002 996 2wd six speed, seal gray 168,000 miles. The owner has owned the car for eight years. The owner said it started smoking out the left tail pipe. He said the smoke was white. It also heated up the exhaust to a point that it melted and deformed the area around the bumper at the tail pipe. I pulled the dipstick, the oil needs changed but no signs of coolant, no smell of fuel. I pulled the throttle body air boot, no oil inside. The owner claims fuel injector failure. The owner also said he pulled plugs and that they were fouled with fuel. I've not been able to find any 996 smoke issues related to fuel injector failure. Considering the cars mileage it is excellent cosmetic condition and comes with three sets of wheels. I have not heard the car run. Thanks
"fuel injector failure" means to me that it stuck open, washed down a cylinder, scored the crap out of it, and likely smoked the catalytic converter on that side since the exhaust got hot enough to melt the bumper cover.
Keep looking. 168K miles and smokes on one side is great - if you're looking for a high-mileage rebuild candidate. Unless it's selling for $18, this probably isn't the 996 you want.
What does white smoke out of your exhaust mean? If you continue to drive the vehicle, the engine could overheat and suffer extensive damage.
Smoke
of this sort is usually caused by the engine burning coolant, and can be the result of a blown head gasket or a damaged cylinder head, or a cracked engine block, which requires a new engine or an engine rebuild.
Run from this one. It is probably d-chunked on Bank 2, the usual culprit.
Smoke out of the bank 2 tailpipe is exactly what you want to avoid as the engine likely needs a rebuild ASAP.
If you're ok buying the car AND THEN putting $20k into it to make it right, have at it.
How this current owner/seller treated his car after noticing "abnormal" behavior speaks volumes about the condition of the car he is selling. IOT, he is getting ready to dump this moneypit on somebody else.
