I'm not sure I'd want someone I don't know to use my garage, tools, have access to my home, etc, vetting or not.

My biggest concern as a homeowner with lots of tools and a garage would be liability insurance in the event someone gets seriously injured in my garage, using my tools (or their own), while working on their car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am working on a personal side-project in the automotive space and looking to have a quick (10 min) phone call with those of you who fit in one of the below groups:
Group 1: Car owners, living in the city, who do not have garage space to work on their cars
Group 2: Home owners looking for an alternate income stream
If you would be willing to participate, please PM me:
- Group youd be willing to discuss (group 1/2/both)
- Phone number where I can contact you
- Best date and time to contact you (including time zone)
Cheers,
Andrew
Thanks for all the replies and conversations so far.
Still looking to speak with more younger people who rent apartments. Looking for you frustrated DIYers out there...
Not sure from your description exactly what you're up to; but if your plan is to provide workshop space to DIYers, it's a solid, proven concept. We have lots of those in Germany, some that have been there as long as I can remember. This place as an example:
https://www.autohobbywerkstatt-berg.de/werkstatt/
. They rent space, tools, lifts, equipment, paint booths, etc. at very reasonable prices. They typically also have paints, oils, fluids & usual service supplies for sale. A friend and I painted his Passat there. Could not have worked out better. People there were doing everything from oil changes to major mechanical repairs. Seemed to be lots of collegiality among the customers & as I recall one guy behind the counter handled all the business.
Any idea what the tv show was called? I'd be interested in checking it out online. I found Salvage Dawgs, but that looks like a show about reclaimed furniture, not autos.
My goal is not to open my own shop, but rather create a marketplace to help DIY auto and motorcycle enthusiasts find vehicle workspace, while helping garage owners earn money on an underutilized asset. Something like Airbnb for DIY garage workspace. Think it would be a great resource for urban apartment dwellers lacking the space to wrench, as well as DIY enthusiasts looking for occasional access to specialized tools without investing the capital.

Ryan, understood and completely agree with you on the concern. In the early days there are two ways I can see addressing this: vetting the people who join the platform, and only allowing basic jobs to be completed in your space (conversation prior to booking to ensure what jobs they're contemplating). Eventually I'd like to provide a rental guarantee (similar to the Airbnb host guarantee) to provide further peace of mind.
search for THE SHOP in Seattle, just opened.... amazing space to store cars, they have a lift and detail bay for members.... and there's a resturant run by one of Seattle's celebrity chefs...
boy I dunno. I feel like guys with nice garages full of tools, lifts, etc are pretty particular about how they are treated. I'm not sure I'd want someone I don't know to use my garage, tools, have access to my home, etc, vetting or not. Obviously the potential liability is also huge. Pretty easy for some expensive tools to grow legs also. Another thing, lets say the guy gets jammed up due to a rusty bolt, wrong part, etc. Now his car is stuck in my garage? How does that work?
I'm also not 100% sure the demand is there either. I would say most guys who are enthusiasts have some buddies outside the city that can help them with garage space for DIY work.
