Many (including me) didn't have a clue of the value, but after checking book value and auction prices, you'd be crazy not to grab it.

Why the sudden change of heart from "never sell it" to "you can have it for $30k"?

I love my 996, but 996's are relatively easy to replace, where having the opportunity to own a MkIV Supra in good condition is quickly becoming rarer.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My dad is the original owner of a 1998 Twin Turbo Supra, Targa Top, 6 speed, all original. He said he would never sell it. It has just over 96k miles. He recently said he would sell it to me for $30k. But I would have to sell my 996. What would you do if you were in my situation?
Owned both , traded in TSupra, when the kids came along, still miss it today. Owned 4 generations of Supra's extremely reliable.
wanted a 944 bad in late 83, but dealer allotment was spoken for, went with 83 Supra, which at that time was Import car of the year.
Awesome car, wasn't a 944 but it was very reliable and capable.
The last gen Supra's were the height of Japanese engineering, ads and articles comparing to Ferrari's and 991Tubo's at minimal cost. They had the spec's but not the heritage.
Few mods, not terribly expensive and that car is a xWing fighter. you can quickly be in TT996/997 Territory. Handles great, Just that things are dated, but can be updated.
Or you can keep/restore it to stock and have a appreciating asset unlike the standard 996.
Original ones are becoming more rare, so might be worth it to do unless your 996 is daily driver.
Supra can easily be daily driver, but diminishes value.
If it is what you say, trade him for your 996 and take the rest that is owed and ask him to put it in his will.
Supra unless you're attached. I wouldn't do it personally as I've spent almost 2 years on my 996, but it's not a crazy switch if you're talking about picking up an appreciating, reliable & fast family-tradition car. It's something you & your dad can enjoy talking about in the years ahead if nothing else.
It seems there's more to the story than meets they eye...? Does your dad need the money? Is he sick? Why the sudden change of heart from "never sell it" to "you can have it for $30k"? In other words, if there's not some pressing need for him to sell it right away, why not just say "you hang on to it and enjoy it dad, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it". If there is a pressing need, and you want to help him out, then sure - you can't really go wrong...I'm pretty sure 996's will be available at similar prices to what they are now for quite some time... Good luck
Supra for sure.. I sold my 94 TT 6 speed hardtop about 3 years ago and am still kicking myself for letting it go. I sold it when I purchased my CL65 I then purchased the Gallardo and then sold the CL65 and picked up the C4S.. I love all the cars that I owned but I miss the supra more then any of the cars I have sold.. And it is way harder to get back into a supra now then the other cars. I would actually pickup another supra if I had the garage space and thought I would be able to drive it (still have a complete fuel system, clutch, boost logic 76mm single kit and an AEM stand alone for the car.. Hanging on to the fact that one day I will purchase another one and build it up)..
Edit: Also look at the cars for sale right now.. If you like the supra then it is stupid not to get it from your dad especially since it is below market value. If you buy it and you dont love it or want back in a 996 you could easily sell the supra and pickup a nice 996 or even 997 for the money you will get out of the Supra.. Its a great car and very hard to find a stock un-modified car for sale.. These will only continue to go up in value as they become more rare..
get the supra........and on your death bed i hope you are thinking of the nurses 36 ers instead of a car .......i know i will be trying to grope them on my last breath
Supra,
1. It is your Dad's, hold onto it as long as you can.
2. You will not come across another one owner no stories supra for 30k
3. As much as I love my 996, and I have no intention to get rid of it as my youngest daughter LOVES it. I see a 996 pop up every few weeks that is tempting to buy at a reasonable price.
4. If you have been exposed to that car since 1998 I am sure that it helped form your love of cars. If you let that car slip you will be tracking it down the rest of your life to buy back.
Get the Supra. Worst case, if you don't like it, you can sell it in a year or two for $50-$60k and get a 997 or 996 turbo. Or even the nicest 996 carrera out there and still make a profit.
Easy one- Supra
They are exploding (have exploded) in value where the only thing that will be exploding on the 996 is the M96 motor. Still more upside to go for the TT I think, where a run-of-the-mill 996 will struggle to appreciate.
The Supra has known provenance, the price is ridiculously low and it is your Dad's. If you want a 996 at some point in the future they may be even cheaper than what you will sell yours for presently.
I don't know what you are waiting for...
yes, a bit more to the story. For the last 15 years it has been an ongoing joke in our family, with me telling my siblings I was going to get my dads Supra some day. So over the last 5 years or so, every time I saw my dad I would ask him if he was ready to sell it to me. So last year, before buying the 996, I asked my dad one last time and surprisingly, he said yes and to make him an offer. I asked what the family price was and he said $30k. I know market value for his car is around $40k or so, do it was a great deal, but its not like I was going to turn around and sell it, so what does market value matter. In discussing things with my wife, she has always like Porsches and she isnt a fan of the Supra...so thats how I ended up in the 996.
Well there's your first problem, you got the wife involved! It's easier to just show up with stuff, otherwise you end up in a predicament like you are now.
Happy wife happy life must be true!
Jokes aside...., what do YOU want? Honestly? Which do you like to drive more and could see yourself in for the next "X" years? If you're just going to drive it til it dies, then pick the car you'd be happier driving.
Yep the wife was the reason for me selling my 94tt 6 speed as well.. I talked about getting another one and she was none too happy. She sees the supra (even in 100% stock form) as a ricer car that little teenagers drive around. But either way the car is gone and most likely I wont get back into another one..
Choice is yours but I understand your pain with the wife
yeah one day I showed up with a 350z. A year later the gray Z became a gray 996. TanyaTwoBags didn't like the torquey nature of the Z anyhow, and she likes riding in the Porsche
I fear OP doesn't really have a decision to make here
Supras get stolen. A lot. At least according to NHTSA.
I would buy the Supra, but I'd store it. They aren't making more; at some point unmolested, unrestored Supras are going to sell for ridiculous amounts of money as drift cars continue to reduce the population.
As far as the 350/370 - Mrs. Schnell wanted one, but I've owned a modern Nissan V6. I won't own another one.
The only problem is, my wife (and myself) fear that I will really never be satisfied with any car. I have owned 35 vehicles and I am 37. So I dont know if I am just itching for something else, or just want the Supra, my once upon a time, dream car.
My dad doesnt really want to sell it right now, he is just willing to sell it to me. Do I think I will have him hold on to it for me, and when he wants to sell it, I will be there waiting.
Sounds like you should wait, own a few more cars in the meantime and keep your right of first refusal with your dad. He’ll keep it safe and well maintained in the meantime. But don’t let it get away, the Supra is a keeper once you own it.
I grew up infatuated with fd RX-7s & SupraTTs. But I've seen a few around here & don't think I'd enjoy one as much as the 996. Had yet another nice canyon run in my car last night and couldn't get enough of the smooth power, dlip downshifts, & great sound. I'm going out for a 100-mile loop in a bit just for the fun of it. There's little chance I'd enjoy the simple act of driving as much with a Supra, and that's not saying anything bad about it. A 911 is just a special car.
Supra, no questions asked. 98 TT is the 959 of Toyotas. I deeply regret not getting the base LE 97 NA car 5 years ago for $20k.
BUT, and this is a big BUT. With Supra, you are running into the same issue as with 959 or 993 Porsche. It is an appreciating, almost irreplaceable car. You will not enjoy driving it as much, as you will always be worried about scratches, damaging the car, car getting stolen etc.
With 996, you can beat on it and not give a single F.
Hawk, do you have siblings that might want the Supra too? If so, snag it now before it become a center piece for family fights. Many (including me) didn't have a clue of the value, but after checking book value and auction prices, you'd be crazy not to grab it.
Well...its in Seattle and I am in Vegas. I just asked my dad to take a couple and send them to me, but he and my mom are on a road trip for a few weeks so it wont be until Thanksgiving, but I will post them up if/when he replies.
Supra ALL DAY! It's the last year of the legend in the US and a true 6 speed.
I still have mine (Premier Edition 6 speed) and not only does she get thumbs up at the PCA events, the "is it for sale?", "NICE SUPRA!" at the gas station and the thumbs up while driving around.
I hear the Supra is a good investment and performs better. But, I would keep the 911 and find a way to buy it too. I never dreamed about owning a Toyota. I did, since about 12, dream about a 911.
Ok, now I get it... From a strictly financial standpoint the Supra is the clear winner - but like you said, it's not like you're just going to turn around and sell "a family heirloom". From a strictly performance standpoint it's probably a little closer-I can't imagine the Supra handles any better than the Carrera, but straight line/sheer speed, the Supra still wins out. Pure cache' - Porsche vs. Toyota? Really? Not even close (except for maybe the speed racer, fast & furious, ricer fanboi contingent - oooh that's unfair...) The wife's preference - this is dangerous territory, and really your purview to negotiate!!! Sounds like a slippery slope to me - you may have to pass and let one of your lucky siblings take advantage of the old man's offer...
Figure out a way to keep both. It's a problem to be solved not an insurmountable hurdle. Since it's your dad get it for less too.
I want to add a 3rd gen RX7 to my fleet someday soon. It is the pinnacle of Japanese engineering
.
Twin CT12B's with a Getrag V160 from the factory.
Comparing a Supra to a 911 never really made sense to me. It's just like comparison with motos vs exotics racing on a freeway to see who's faster.
Japanese cars have always been the underdog but they are slowly making their way as far as collectability. The 90's JDM golden era showcased a lot of fun Japanese cars that are starting to make their mark.
I remember seeing this ad in the car mags as a kid and thought, clever marketing but yeah I did dream of owning a Nissan... R34 Skyline GTR V Spec!

Probably a generational thing. When I was a kid, Toyota didnt have a lot going for it in the performance realm. Reliability, yes, performance, not so much. And every Nissan I can think of was an econobox.
When was that, pre 1973 oil crisis? That brought some exposure to Japanese cars in the US; Datsun 280Z, 510, Skyline, Toyota 2000GT, Sports 800, Celica GT aka the "Japanese Mustang", Corolla GT.

It's very rare to see a Datsun 240/260/280 any more these days (I loved them back in the day)... If you do, the bodies usually look like something akin to swiss cheese (unless they've been fully restored or sport a few gallons of Bondo)...As for any of the others, it's not that they didn't perform well, the styling was just horrendous...unless you like boxes with a bunch of angular spoilers bolted on to them.
Let us know what you decide to do. Curious to see how this ends. Also pics of the Supra would be awesome.
Regardless of Porsche vs Toyota arguments, this is a car your father has had from new. It'd be cool to keep that in the family as long as possible, full stop. That's not even factoring its status as a modern day classic (even a modern day Japanese automotive icon), and that it is a rare and increasingly valuable car.
As much as we love our 996s, for the most part they are a dime a dozen. If I were in you shoes the Supra would be the choice hands down.
I have discussed it with my dad, and when he wants to sell it, he will to me. So I keep driving the 996 while my dad stores my car for me! Pictures will come when my dad gets back from traveling in a couple of weeks.
For those of us that grew up with racing video games and the Fast and Furious franchise, the Supra MKIV will always be a halo car. I love my 996, but 996's are relatively easy to replace, where having the opportunity to own a MkIV Supra in good condition is quickly becoming rarer.
Glad to read you're keeping it in the family. The Supra from that era is already a legend in the making. The fact that you'd be owner #2 after your FATHER... you'd be insane not to take it.
I'm a P car guy through & through, have a nice little collection of air & water cooled, BUT in this scenario I would forsake a bog standard 996 for a TT Supra, wouldn't even think twice about it. Best of luck deciding but again I believe the wise choice would be the rice.
That is nice! Imagine tan interior? These cars are creeping up in value, so you can't go wrong.
Never owned one personally, I'm more of a RX-7 FD type of person, but a couple of my friends growing up had one and they where a beast. Pretty reliable too.
A. Good for your dad having one.
B. Nice of him to let you have first chance of buying it.
I'm glad you and your dad have come up with a plan. I hope my kids think enough of me one day to keep one of my cars in good shape and drtiveable and not just sell them.
I had a Supra exactly like this, '81 special edition black on silver with maroon leather. First car I had with a killer OEM stereo w/graphic equalizer. It wasn't turbo, but the straight six was smooth as butter as was the 5-sp manual. Later models w/turbo were faster and handled better but I never cared for the styling compared to the MK 1. Only problem I had was even with the (power) seat all the way down my hair brushed against the headliner, which was annoying. One of the few cars I sold which I regret, however I think probably it would be hard to find parts for it today.
It has the tan interior. It also has factory oak panels on the dash, door trim panels, and instrument cluster. Not very pretty to be honest, but a really rare option. Also came with the gold emblems factory as well. I am a bit excited!
